In a tragic event Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin (#3) collapsed unconscious after a routine collision during with Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. The game was in the first quarter at Paycor Stadium. After the hit and tackle, Hamlin got up off the ground, stood in place for a moment and then collapsed unconscious on the field.
The 24-year-old was immediately tended to by medical personnel and was administered CPR for roughly 10 minutes. He was unresponsive as he was put on a stretcher. Hamlin was given oxygen as he was loaded into an ambulance on the field. He was then transported to UC Medical Center, a level one trauma center, where he is in critical condition, according to the league. Hamlin has a pulse but is not breathing on his own.
The NFL suspended the game and issued the following statement:

But let’s agree that having heart failures at 30, 24, 27, 30 was very unusual before the COVID vaxx.
That was a typical football collision. It was not unusually forceful, nor did the helmet slam into the chest. And he got right up immediately after the hit.
Football players get hit in the chest multiple times EVERY DAY.
He didn’t hit him straight in the chest… it was a little off center and a perfectly ordinary tackle.
Watching the hit on television shows that it was not an extremely hard hit and looked relatively mild compared to some tackles that rock both players. We are being lied to by the media and this needs to be investigated properly and thorough.

I will bet you too that they are keeping this poor young man on life support while they dicker with his family and I imagine his family will be paid handsomely or at least offered a lot of money to not Sue the NFL.

Others on the thread immediately thank him and agree. I don’t believe the Covid vax caused or contributed to the players collapse but I certainly would wait a while to completely evaluate the situation before sending out some sort of pro vax disclaimer/proclamation.
For me it’s like the “Twilight Zone.” So many people I know read every ingredient on a food label before they’ll put it in their body. My thoughts and prayers for the young man’s health. Whatever can be done to make sure he has a chance to lead a normal life should be done.
That being said, football has always been a metaphor for war. The ethos has always included the concept of “Next Man Up.” If a player goes down, the next player in line has to be ready to continue the game. It is why football is such a tough, cruel but great sport. It makes young men stronger and more able to deal with adversity.
So, after he was carted off and the ambulance left the stadium, the question should have been — would continuing the game jeopardize Damar’s health in any way? Would it jeopardize the health of any of the other players beyond the risks inherent in the game? Both of those answers were no. So, the game should have continued.
I know some will say that it is just a game, and we are talking about a young man’s life, but at that point continuing the game had nothing to do with his health. The game was being postponed to virtue signal and to coddle the mental weaknesses of today’s players. It had nothing to do with Damar’s health. As a father of a high school football player who lost 4 weeks to concussion protocol, I still would have liked to see the game finished.
Haven’t watched football in many years but in the old days, think Johnny Unitas and Bart Starr era, guys get their bell rung, injured, knocked unconscious, dragged off the field, then the game goes on. IDK, things in general were a lot more violent back then and men shook it off and moved on.
My Dad played college ball, and in 1950 had offers from the 49ers and the Oakland Giants (yes, there were Oakland Giants).

A friend of his went pro, was crippled in training camp and wound up with nothing, except being handicapped. Protective equipment was minimal. We had some real old stuff in the attic, which I painted up to be a spaceman for halloween.
One question I had was do safeties wear a chest plate? I know we wore them back in the 60’s but I played interior line and it was normal to get a helmet in the chest area and the plate spread the hit energy out.
Still, it’s unusual for a tackler to take a chest hit but anything can happen. IDK, perfect storm of factors like one doctor commented.
Boxers endure a lot of chest impact, although I don’t think modern boxers aim for the solar plexus as they did in the early fights, and in particular the bare knuckle days when it was a preferred target as opposed to the head.

Excuse me? This young man DIED on the field in front of the entire world! They did 9 minutes of CPR on him in front of the teams! I can’t imagine being a teammate of Damar’s and wanting to continue playing a game while their friend is in critical condition at a nearby hospital. This is NOT just a simple concussion.
I don’t know if you have ever done CPR on a person before but it’s gross. You can only do it for a few minutes then someone else has to take over. It’s exhausting. You will probably break the persons ribs and really who wants to do that.
I didn’t watch this game but they have a machine now that can do it better than a person. Did they use that or was it just people doing it.
Anyways the world needs to get used to this. You will see this. You may have to give CPR. CPR usually from my experience doesn’t work it’s just a Hail Mary to do what you can. Sometimes it may work.

My son is a med student and worked in a hospital…he recently told me that CPR, when administered in a hospital setting, works in only 15% of cases. It doesn’t work at all when the heart has stopped! How many times have you seen this on TV – the patient flatlines and then the paddles come out and shocks are applied, followed by the heart restarting…he said, in real life it simply doesn’t work that way. 15% is as good as it gets.
The ambulance left the field slowly. It also drove at a rather sedate Pace to the hospital. The poor young man is dead and they are just keeping him on a life support until they figure out how to handle the pr disaster.

Would Dr McCullough be so kind as to offer an AUTOPSY to remove all doubt? I wish he would, but that would be too.. logical.
Possible, but this is a bit of a stretch. That same time period found the average age of the victims was just under 15 and most of them were due to projectile impacts (baseball). This would be an unlikely explanation for someone aged 24, especially when compared to the number of sudden collapses athletes have had in the last year.
That tackle looked pretty routine, and the player got up. If this was some kind of trauma that stopped the heart on impact, the man isn’t going to be able to take several seconds to get himself up off the ground. I would find pulmonary embolism more reasonable as a cause for a sudden collapse like that, and it would jive with vitals returning to normal if the clot managed to clear. I speak from experience here, I had a PE years ago, and it was accompanied by loss of consciousness and cessation of breathing, but also a fairly rapid return to normal vitals with medical treatment.

Routine tackle on Higgins, Hamlin gets up, brushes against Mixon, touches his face mask, and then collapses.

Defensive players can be defenseless as well. I’ve been a Bills fan since 89′ and the Bengals were definitely attempting to exploit a weakness in the Bill’s secondary. They’re spread thin and undersized. Our prayers are for Hamlin and The Bills will recognize the intent… Bills Mafia.

If I’m reading this right, it means that IF he took the vax, and IF he developed myocarditis then the relatively normal but elevated adrenaline would have had a magnified effect. Poor kid.

The differential diagnosis includes Commotio cordis is a cause of sudden death when one has sudden and intense impact to the sternum which catches the heart at the wrong time in the electric pulse cycle. He was hit pretty hard in middle of the chest at an odd tackling angle by the helmet of the opposing player.
This happens estimated 10-20 times per year. The last case that was in the news was a high-school baseball player from one of our local high schools(Grossmont High, San Diego) who was nailed in the sternum with a line drive or bad hop and he died. Another kid in little league in 2015 was hit by a pitch and then jogged off to first base, tripped a few times, then fell to the ground (he survived with CPR by the crowd in the stands). The heart may beat for a short time after the impact but it goes into a bad arrhythmia that then underperfuses the brain and you lose consciousness and die if not resuscitated.
Nonetheless, he will most likely be put into hypothermic coma (temperature controlled by intravascular cooling catheter at 33 C for 24 hours then rewarmed). Of course it is to be seen what kind of damage the brain took. Prognosis is more accurate 72 hours after arrest at least for poor prognosis (e.g no or minimal pupillary response, cornea reflex, vestibuilocular reflex, gag with deep suction, initiation of breath, movement of limbs to noxious stimulation. ) Still high mortality rate by 6 months close to 85% for any cardiac arrest patient.

Sometimes a stressful situation where you blood pressure is high (such as after a tackle like this) can induce a large enough cerebral aneurysm to rupture (2-3% of us have aneurysms based on autopsy studies but fortunately most are too small to rupture before we die in old age) and if the location and bleeding pattern is massive, you don’t have time to even grab your head and you just collapse and the Neuro-adrenaline surge stuns the myocardium and causes asystole. Unfortunately we may know from his autopsy if his brain was extensively damaged from global anoxia.

Impact from a hard thrown baseball is much different from a much slower and wider impact from a helmet. Also the other players helmet did not hit him Square in the sternum. It was a perfectly routine tackle. The syndrome you were talking about is really seen in hockey and baseball, not in football.

I was reading Dr McCulloughs and Dr paul Alexander and they said that the shot causes your heart to have electrical misfires. Also the tube is keeping his lungs and heart working but technically he’s not breathing “on his own” from what I read…and what you also quoted.
Deny oxygen to the brain via stopping the heart and some degree of brain damage takes place, which can compromise the autonomic nervous system which directs breathing.
So we are definitely looking at a nervous system injury, but it’s the trauma of being denied oxygen as opposed to a physical injury.
