The government does not want to lose the treasure trove of information on it’s citizens that was scoured from Twitter. Without two factions well represented in the mix, the tone and the content dwindled. The government wants to keep track of all of it’s citizens. It is cleaning Twitter of some of its less savory elements on the back end and it will put some new shiny window dressing on the front end. Elon will not be allowed to remove all of the backdoors. None of the telecommunications companies have ever been allowed to remove their backdoors to .gov.

Thank you. That is the first reasonable hypothesis for the Musk as Trojan Horse that I’ve come across. The only thing I’ll say about it is that it has the smell of excess complexity in an environment in which our self-appointed masters have their hands full starting and running wars and stealing elections. Not only that, but highlighting the absence of free speech this way was not a particularly good move, given that the government already has 6 ways to Sunday to monitor what conservatives are doing. It also has the ring of something that is too clever by half, meaning it unleashes a marketplace for ideas that goes beyond anything else so widely available. Still, just because something may have been a bad idea doesn’t mean that Ubu and the deep state wouldn’t try it.
As for the fact that Elon knew what was up from the get-go would just mean that he had good intelligence before he made the move. That seems possible. And the government may have “allowed” Musk to shut down their spying tool (and take over data bases that compromise them) because they had no way to shut him down once things got started, kind of the same way they allowed Trump to get elected. They might have figured they could take him down once things got underway — may even still think that — whereas taking him out in some way before the fact either wasn’t possible or inadvisable.

Agreed, every business has back up files and redundant systems running. I am in banking. Banks are required to have a DRP, disaster recovery plan, BCP, business continuity planning, and BIA, business impact analysis. These protocols cut across all industries nowadays.
Banks are required to keep records much longer than most businesses. So, although the same processes apply, Twitter backups may have only been retained a couple of years and then the media reused. Banks have records going back decades to support mortgages, mergers, long term projects like infrastructure. Twitter not so much.

Today we are in unfamiliar (dare I say hostile?) territory. I doubt there is a one of us who can honestly say he could see this coming, and so suddenly. I am praying it will not come to “knowing what to do”, Dunes.
I’ve been thinking of two aspects of your point above just today. Two faces of the same issue. One issue is the horrid realization of just how much evil the US has purchased with “foreign aid” over the decades. In most of the nations designated for aid their best outcome is if aid is all stolen by the US politicians before it leaves our shores since once it arrives at their borders the control is complete. That’s the outer face of the issue.
The inner face is the purchase of indulgences. Domestically we’ve all been conditioned to the purchase of indulgences. No longer shall we engage directly with the crazy lady talking to the tree in the park, we must instead contact “the proper authorities” to deal with her. No longer can we directly assist the family down the road during a hard time, the government will provide. To the extent that we each still ignore those prohibitions and take direct actions we avoid the indulgence trap. But to the extent that we have each been pushed to allow government to step into our roles as decent people we have been sold an indulgence. We are absolved of our responsibility for others since we are paying our taxes to do that for us. From there it was a matter of degree, not direction, to coopt the churches into the same indulgence schemes. “Sponsor a few refugees and the government will pay your church a reasonable amount to cover costs.” (just one example)
But then as always, the indulgences took a turn in direction also. No longer are they sold to absolve us of the need to do acts of charity or human decency, now they can be purchased to absolve of us of our misdeeds – using too much gasoline, of eating too much meat, of being white, or any other perceived wrong we may commit. The sale of indulgences is the number one inflation-resistant, recession-proof market out there. Nothing can beat it. And the price is payable in any currency, false virtue being a favorite.

I sometimes buy pallet-sized boxes of stuff of which I can only see the top layer of about 4-6 inches. I bid based on what I see. Sometimes I get the pallet home and find things that I never expected. Some have value and some don’t. In digging to the bottom, there will be the expected, the surprising, junk and the “I wonder what this might be?” Musk seems to be finding a lot of that last one.

Taking the 40,000 foot view, and building on Ausonius’s insightful comment earlier today, it seems to me like we are heading for the perfect storm:
– @Jack and Musk are trolling the DS with potential devastating information drops. Look here — we are going to expose all your @$!@ any second now! We have all your emails and DMs and we caught your errand boy/mole red handed!
– President Trump trolling the DS with pushing the fact that the DS overthrew the US Constitution and there must be a new election called, basically waving his hands in the air saying “arrest me now!”
– Brazil and Peru both on fire
– NATO crossed the Russian nuclear red line by targeting nuclear bombers inside Russia (Tom Luongo just did an excellent write up on this, available at Zerohedge)
– the US government runs out of spending authority in 9 days, providing further opportunities for chaos
– Ukraine may well get obliterated in the next ten days.
– If Russia obliterates Kiev with something like a MOAB (like President Trump did to the ISIS in Afghanistan), do our war pigs go nuclear? Does Russia then go intercontinental ballistic?
