Elon Musk has sent an internal memo to company employees notifying them of layoffs to begin tomorrow. The Verge obtained a copy of the memo:

In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday. We recognize that this will impact a number of individuals who have made valuable contributions to Twitter, but this action is unfortunately necessary to ensure the company’s success moving forward.
Given the nature of our distributed workforce and our desire to inform impacted individuals as quickly as possible, communications for this process will take place via email. By 9AM PST on Friday Nov. 4th, everyone will receive an individual email with the subject line: Your Role at Twitter. Please check your email, including your spam folder.
– If your employment is not impacted, you will receive a notification via your Twitter email.
– If your employment is impacted, you will receive a notification with next steps via your personal email.
– If you do not receive an email from twitter-hr@ by 5PM PST on Friday Nov. 4th, please email [email protected].
To help ensure the safety of each employee as well as Twitter systems and customer data, our offices will be temporarily closed and all badge access will be suspended. If you are in an office or on your way to an office, please return home.

I usually put it as someone who has never worked where they had a sign, listing # of days since last accident.
There IS a satisfaction that comes from producing something with your own hands, while avoiding losing one, having dirt under your fingernails, callouses, being physically tired at the end of the day,..
And, there is a segment of the population that would NEVER work at such jobs, even when starting in the job market, looks down on such work, and thinks only those too stupid to do anything else, would work at such jobs.
I represent such an attitude, because I worked at many such jobs, as well as “white collar” jobs, and saw more morons in white collars, than blue.

Bobo , in 2007 , after semi retiring in 2000 , I also needed a job with benefits. . Problem was I had never used a mop but someone suggested I apply for a custodial job with the Manatee county school district as a custodian. Learned alot and retired again in 2019. Don’t know where u live , know it is not fl. . $15 to $20 an hour jobs are plentiful down here. GL. Pray and help others
I too did custodial work for awhile,..it eas a company that contracted out to a large grocery store chain.

It’s interesting that Twitter has 7500 employees globally and Musk thinks he only needs half that to get the job done. The Verge article says Musk’s team has already decided on criteria for who stays. Likely, they’ve been analyzing during the whole purchase phase that only culminated a week ago.
Wait until those kept on board start whining about how much more work they have. I wonder if they’ll do so on social media.

Already figured in. One Half axed. One third of the remainder can’t take it. Presto: Lean, mean Twitter machine of about 2,700.
Checking what coders have done is not that hard. The code is stored in a code-repository system (a fancy database), and as changes are made and saved to this system, the name of the person who is ‘checking in’ these changes is tracked. You can get a -rough- outline of who is doing any work by looking at these check-ins historically. This is not a great metric b/c coders can game the system by making ‘micro-check-ins’ for very small changes to pump up their numbers. That behavior can also be sniffed out, but it does complicate the matter slightly. My guess is that this is what Elon’s team has been doing and has a rough-cut list of slackers who aren’t making many/any check-ins of note over whatever the ‘observation period’ was determined to be.
The fired employees should apply for jobs at the sponsors who have suspended their Twitter advertising. And they probably will. Those high censorship skills can be useful in progressesive companies.
Keeping them out of the buildings is the smartest thing to do.
I’ve seen where people have been escorted to their desk with a little box for their coffee cup and their personal belongings and not allowed to touch anything else.

I once had a team lead fired for falsifying his time sheet and being an overall jerk. The affair with a married director while he was also married was just a bonus. They asked us to vacate the area while he packed up so he wouldn’t feel embarrassment. We went for ice cream to celebrate. When we got back, we found out we missed the fun where he refused to pack up and was trying to get past HR and security to get to his lover to protest his firing. Ice cream was good, though.
Layoffs are pretty awful to witness. I went through two as a telecom manager in the early 2000s. I survived, but I had to take part in informing and escorting people out. Not a fun job, even though I chose some of them to let go.
Ditto to all, even telecom. And once, TPTB didn’t have the respect for the managers to have us chose who to let go.
Survivors guilt was brutal.
When our oilfield pipe manufacturer experienced the oil patch collapse in the 1980s, our order backlog went from ~$300 million to negative $75million in a few months – customers were returning their purchases. We had enough cash to operate ‘as normal’ for about 3 months.
Our CEO had an interesting approach – he told us ‘I have fired everyone’ – you managers need to figure out who you should hire back to keep the wheels on the business. So mentally you weren’t firing co-workers, you were offering jobs to some. Business survived to fight another day.

This is about a as awkward as the time my entire office was informed we would be closing and work moved to another state on April Fool’s Day. Choosing that date explained a lot about the workplace.

Regardless, if you are a valuable employee, you are typically not let go. And you should already know your next move just in case you get caught in the crosshairs.

I must consider the contrary perspective and be wary of “ battered conservative white hat syndrome”. Someone was telling me about a Twit employee filming her “workday.” If true, she had access to all the free delicacies she could eat, free espresso, free wine, luxurious places to “destress,” opportunities to get her vitamin D on the rooftop while playing games, etc., etc., etc. And the only “work” she did ALL day was attend a meeting.
