Hollywood actor James Caan has died, he was 82-years-old. Caan was famous for his roles in many historic movies, perhaps the most well-known was his role in the Godfather.
Caan had a Twitter account [SEE HERE] where he would often post pictures from some of his movies. There is a lot of memories in those pictures.
Hollywood – “James Caan, the brawny star who played Sonny Corleone in The Godfather and a rough-and-tumble athlete in Rollerball but had the self-assurance to showcase a sensitive side during his long career, has died. He was 82.
Caan died Wednesday night, his rep told The Hollywood Reporter, confirming a post on the actor’s Twitter account. No other details of his death were immediately available. (read more)
Johnathon – Johnathon – Johnathon !!!
Another movie proving to be prophetic.
RIP James Caan.
The writer was not a prophet but a time traveler!
Boy I will miss him, loved his acting. Another one gone.
Even better actor than people gave him credit for. Terrible news.
He had a good long run at least. 82 is nothing to sneeze at.
My favorite movie with James Caan was “The Gambler”.
Mine was The Killer Elite.
Rollerball
Thief
One of the all-time greats. R.I.P. Mr. Caan.
Oh no…*sigh*…
One of my favorite all time movies was The Thief, starring Caan. I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it.
I won’t spoil the ending, but it has a very personal appeal but also a wider meaning in regards to what is happening to us, We the People. If you’ve seen the movie, then you understand the significance of what Caan’s character did (and WHY he did it) in the climax of the movie.
Outstanding film
One of the best films!
My favorite as well, excellent soundtrack too. Got me hooked on Michael Mann films, and Tangerine Dream music.
OMG that Tangerine Dream soundtrack….
The mercurial Marlon Brando in an interview once said that “Jimmy Caan” made him laugh quite often on the set of The Godfather.
Brian’s Song – a sentimental movie – made him very famous decades ago.
Yes. That was a lovely movie. He had a great run and will be warmly remembered I’m sure.
He really hated trying get around in New York City.
Every bridge has a toll booth.
Those toll booths can be murder.
Ask Sonny.
I see what you did there
“Your country ain’t your blood, don’t forget that.”
Trivia: According to what was on radio Sonny was killed on October 3, 1951.
As Sonny arrived at the toll fate Russ Hodges radio call of Bobby Thompson’s home run is playing.
Toll fate? Freudian slip?
the “f and g” side by side on keyboard.
Say that quickly out loud.
I get autocorrected all the time, and frequently don’t catch it. We are human — and maybe —so are our smarty pants computers.
Freudian slip?
When you say one thing but mean your mother?
He was great in “Misery.”
Travel well, James.
Yes, he was. One of the creepiest nailbiter movies ever… Kathy Bates was scary to the max and his fear was palpable…
No surprise that he was not good at marriage. He’d have been a handful.
Drop dead handsome, an exceptionally versatile and gifted actor…
Yes, Misery would have to be my fave. Him and Kathy Bates. What a team! Scary as heck.
He will be missed for sure. So many great movie memories. Anyone remember “Brian’s Song?”
Nixon loved Brian’s Song.
A TV movie so good it got a theatrical release.
Caan and Billy Dee Williams became stars because of this film.
Oh interesting. I kind of imagined that movie was his first or at least one that really got him noticed.
He was in Combat, that is how far back he goes.
Wow, I did not know that. I’ll have to check that out.
Great movie. If you like that movie I recommend Bang The Drum Slowly with Robert DeNiro and Michael Moriarity. A baseball movie which came out the same time period.
Yeah, I have a hard time watching DeNiro anymore as he’s become a total douche.
I hear you about DeNiro. This is pretty Godfather DeNiro and Moriarity is the star in this. Vincent Gardenia is great as the manager as well.
Yes, DeNiro is a fine actor but as it turns out is not such a fine person. Never really cared for him anyway.
Thanks so much! I was just thinking earlier that I’d like to get a few of his movies that I haven’t seen yet.
Yes! Every time I ever watched after the first time, I started crying in the first scene! 😢😆
Yep, it is a real tearjerker. Pretty amazing the range of roles James Caan played. From crying to laughing out loud with “Elf.”
Thank you Sundance, for this memorial and the link to Caan’s Twitter account.
You are correct ….a LOT of memories there. Think I’ve seen all those movies in which he starred or co-starred.
Boy oh boy do I feel old…..
He was great in Vegas! A tough guy with a heart.
Bad Ass
He was so handsome in his day! Sorry to be superficial just reminiscing. RIP sir.
Yummy eye candy:
OOps! sorry. I thought I was posting the link.
Lol. I can live with the post.
So sad I can only up vote once. 🥺
looks like his head was superimposed onto the body.
Don’t forget El Dorado with John Wayne!
Love that movie!
One of my favorites
“Swede, I need a gun for a man who can’t shoot.”
RIP, Mississippi.
clear ether
eon
Alan Badillion Treherne
Ah, I was all about Robert Mitchum even tho he played a dirty drunk.
Thank you! I was about to say that!
Johnathon E.
“Ears. Ears are important, too.”
RIP James Caan
“Gardens of Stone” — RIP.
Sidebar: “Elf” is the second greatest Christmas film behind “Die Hard” — godspeed.
RIP Sonny🙏🏻🙏🏻
According to some articles Cann believed that Trump is an offer that American cannot refuse
El Dorado was great! I’m a John Wayne fan and James Caan was perfect for that role.
James Caan was a quality actor, one of a kind. He enhanced every movie he acted in.
The world is becoming a lesser place.
Eraser with Arnold was good, as well as Misery. I also liked Caan in the John Wayne movie.
I think nowadays he is best known as Buddy’s dad in Elf.
When watching The Godfather I told a relative that James Caan was this great actor who died young.
Later I was trying to figure out who this actor was in Eraser, and was shocked when I finally figured it out.
James Caan
Rest Easy
End of Tweet
One of my all time favorites, a little known fil called “Thief”, starring James Cann, directed by Michael Mann.
Another all time favorite, El Dorada with a young James Cann, and John Wayne…
Great body of work,..
James Caan was the real deal. No pretense. He wasn’t acting.
In fact, he didn’t work in Hollywood for years because he was so hard-nosed, the limp-wristed types “canceled” him.
He had a habit of getting upset with people, pushing them, and hitting them. No kidding. Not “career enhancing” at all.
Because he wasn’t acting. He was just being James Caan.
His TV role in Las Vegas came after a very long blackballed dry spell.
He didn’t whine, didn’t complain. “It is what it is. What are you gonna do?”
He was a real man, authentic, his acting….wasn’t acting.
Badabing !!! James Caan Perfect Performance – The Godfather
[20 second clip.]
Greatest death scene ever … at the tollbooth. Too soon?
I was 14 years old when I saw The Godfather in a theater. I went into a state of shock – no movie could possibly be better than this.
My only similar reaction was to Springsteen’s Born to Run: this was what rock and roll should be.
I’m pleased that my child’s reaction stands up in both cases.
Springsteen sold out to the libs and got rich, Mr. Caan acted!
And Mr. Caan, politically, WAS one of us, unlike Springsteen.
If you haven’t already, you should watch “The Offer” on Paramount Plus. It’s about the making of “The Godfather.” Really interesting with some great acting. Miles Teller as Al Ruddy, the producer and Matthew Good who does an excellent portrayal of Robert Evans, head of Paramount Studio at the time.
It’s worth the time.
Agree, very good series. Bad reviews by woke liberal sites, but that’s because it wasn’t diverse enough for them.
Probably one reason it was so good! 🤣
I used to work in that disgusting industry about 20 years ago. I can say that Caan was one of the very few good ones in Hollywood. There are definitely not a lot of them. Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russel are just a few that I remember being good ones.
God made him an offer he couldn’t refuse!
Rest In Peace.
Caan is a splendid example of the Alpha males who so often succeed in acting.
Errol Flynn was an Australian sailing deck hand who came to Hollywood to be a movie star – just that simple.
Richard Harris the actor wanted to be a singing star so he recruited Jimmy Webb to write McArthur Park – just that simple.
James Caan married a Playboy centerfold and became a Jewish rodeo star – just that simple.
Only Donald Trump can truly understand.
In other words, WINNERS.
RIP, James. Godspeed
I’ll always remember him in El Dorado, Games, Rollerball, Freebie & The Bean, Thief and, of course, “Las Vegas.”
R.I.P., Mr Caan.
My favorite James Caan role: Sgt. Eddie Dolan in A Bridge Too Far.
Concur
Typically I would say who cares? Just another person who happens to be a celebrity but then I read that he was a rare Trump supporter in our so called entertainment industry and I feel the loss
“Brian’s Song” was one of the first Made for TV movies that I ever watched – I think I was about eight years old.
The final scene, where Caan is running towards the camera in slow motion, with his face full of hope and joie de vivre, while the announcer says “When you think of Brian Piccolo, don’t remember how how died, but think of how he lived – how he DID LIVE” still brings me to tears whenever I watch it!
RIP James – and thank you for all of the great memories!
They got Sonny on the causeway.
It was Barzini all along.
He was such a great actor and so many great roles. I believe my favorite role of his was his portrayal of Chicago Bears running back Brian Piccolo in “Brian’s Song”.
things you’ll never forget.
so long to another great.
Right before Carlo got his Azz whooped
Gianni Russo (Carlo) says in real life he would have won that fight.
He also says Sinatra was his singing teacher, and he had sex with Marilyn Monroe.
Such a fine line, I hate to see it go..
When movies were moves…
My favorite movie of his was “Thief,” with Willie Nelson, in which Willie dispensed some wisdom that stays with me to this day.
“Never lie. If they’re a stranger, who the f*** are they that you have to lie to them? If it’s a friend or family member, they’re gonna find out anyway, so why lie?”
Brian’s song. A bridge too far. Epic
Many years ago, he was a guest on Letterman. I remember Letterman asking him his view on something political. I loved his answer….”Why would anyone want an opinion from an actor, we’re all stupid!”
Watched one of his more obscure movies a while back on TCM called Rain People with Shirley Knight and Robert Duvall. Not a bad movie. Has some long dull sections, but worth watching if you’ve never seen it.
Hey, don’t forget “Honeymoon in Vegas” ! Such a funny movie.
