Reuters has an interesting, albeit sad article, highlighting the state of the U.S. and global economy. According to the article, many college graduates this year are finding their recent job offers rescinded as the landscape for employment quickly evaporates.
The article focuses on the tech sector with various platform companies yanking the jobs. Twitter, Meta (Facebook), Lyft and Uber are all mentioned as downsizing, freezing current employment and/or leaving positions unfilled.

My son and his family had a move planned the beginning of June.
It was well planned in advance, he was transferred by his employer.
They have moved often usually every three years or so and are well versed in moving and everything that is necessary.
So they got everything done and the movers came and packed the stuff into the truck and then said it will be at your new house in three days………..then they get a call saying sorry we do not know when your stuff will be at your new house.
We have no drivers available and can not co-ordinate with the fuel shortage and lack of drivers to get your things from here to there.
They are moving clear across the country over 1800 miles and so now their things are in storage and my daughter in law and grand kids are going to spend the summer visiting family while my son lives in the house with hastily bought lawn furniture and a sleeping bag until hopefully the real furniture arrives in about three or four weeks.
So all of those new truck drivers are great but with no fuel there are no jobs.
And no DEF. May God Save America!

One other thing, it’s impossible to store fresh produce (lots of vitamins/minerals, little calories), so, if you can, get a garden and/or fruit plants going. It’s hard only to eat cooked food all the time. Also storing some multi-vitamins will also be a good idea as well to plug the holes in your emergency diet above. These are critical for your health.

I work in construction. I don’t have any current employees thanks to what is exhibited in the photo at the article’s start. I work on job sites with many other tradesmen who almost all have employees. You can’t trust apprentices and helpers to stay off their cell phones. I think you might end up with 6 hours construction work and about 2 hours cell phone use. Even 7-1 would be bad enough. You can spot them as being the employees who want to take on every task where they are out of sight. They end up constantly distracted and forgetful when they do appear. Some tradesmen have resorted to demanding their employees hand over their phones which they will let them have during breaks or at day’s end. I have seen with my own eyes, helpers who will continue to work while using their cell phone. They walk around the job site’s inherit dangers with their face buried in the screen. Tasks are done one handed such as moving materials or cleaning.

Good point, lack of good old fashioned work ethic is another issue, needing addressed. More than a few would be employees feel entitled and owed … with no obligation to deliver good work output.
I have seen it both ways but the fact I state “have seen it both ways” indicates it is a more than just noticeable issue that needs to be addressed.
Yet, the one interesting trend I have seen is the current crop of kids < 30 years old, seem to be shaking off the malaise and actually show some good potential if guided properly out the gate.
Employers sometimes know this is going on but make NO distinction between those that work hard and bust ass , and those who goof off.

Yes, employers today are hesitant to reward (recognize) good work, discipline slackers and fire those who deserve it.
To be fair to Employers today, they do have to tread carefully when it comes to recognition, rewards and punishment.

Schools are that way, where teachers often get in trouble for leaving kids OUT of reward trips, when the idea is supposed to be that it is a “reward.” It gets esp topsy-turvy when behavior kids learn to manipulate admin — telling them to tell the teachers (yeah, it works that way, very often) that they’ll do some work AFTER the teacher does something they want done (the case I’m thinking of was “he’ll work for you after you look up baseball stats for him,” to which I replied “I’ll see about the stats after I look at the work and see how much effort was put into it.”
Didn’t even get to finish out the year, but oh well. These days, the problem kids get lots of extra benefits — specia attentions and rewards, which doesn’t seem fair to those who come every day and do what they’re supposed td (and are then

Cell phones and workers who do not speak English well are a big problem and really slow the work down.
They can also be a big danger when they can not follow directions or avoid dangerous situations or move out of danger quickly because their English is poor or they are distracted by cell phone use.
Niece’s DH is early 40’s. I see his posts on facebook during the day and when he is home, his nose is in the phone, I think watching Tik Tok. His employment is with a City, outside with probably no direct supervision. He is, I bet, one of millions, just like you say. Another thing is to be in a store and need to use the restroom but can’t get to a stall because it might be break time and employees are checking their emails or something. Let there be an accident or something going on, everyone has their phone in the air making videos. How did we ever live without them?
Last power plant project I worked in 2005 phones went into a locker at 7 and you got them back at 6 or 8 depending. Caught with a phone in your hand meant fired and escorted out. I was fine with that.
Last time I tried to hire work at my house I told the contractor I see a phone out I want them off the job.
Ended up doing it myself. The damned phones are that pervasive.
I just let an employee go who was just as you describe. 6 hours of work and 2 hours in the phone. Absolutely addicted. And he didn’t recognize the addiction nor how much of his time it actually took. He was hurt with a lacerated spleen, several broken ribs and a bruised liver. 5 days in the ICU plus surgery. All because he wasn’t paying attention to the job. As soon as he came back to work I told him he was fired. What a moron.

When my daughter graduated with degrees in biology and physics with a minor in chemistry she found, as a US citizen of Caucasian ancestry, she was not employable in the sciences fields or any fields outside of the food service industry..

So I see nothing has changed in the last 10 years… of course there is also the long term employment viability of someone with a degree in gender studies..

There is no civil discourse anymore; just steamrolling and doormatting. THERE IS NO LEADERSHIP.
I’m a single Mom. I can’t ride off into battle (but I really want to!). I have to remain and care for her, while I watch helplessly my country that I love fall apart. I tried to be a Constitutional coach locally, but people don’t want to spend 8 weeks on a course “Biblical Citizenship” for 2 hours a week, as it seems their attention span can’t handle it — or like me now — we are struggling to keep our businesses afloat, so the installed government has more to pilfer.
I can’t remove her from school to homeschool her, as I must also work simultaneously to keep a roof over our heads and fear retaliation from the non-custodial / non-participatory parent who relishes in our destruction. I am buried. Yet, in the same hand… I carry much guilt and concern over sending her to school every single day and the thought that she in some way will feel I abandoned her to this horrific freak show. At least I can work from home, so that she is not alone as much as possible.
I can only hope that the Lord has her where He Intends her to be, so that she may speak His Light into the darkness and hopefully save some very confused teenagers.
