If Morris paid the tax liability and is paying the rent, is Hunter properly claiming both as income on his taxes? Gifts of cash are capped at 10k per year. Morris and Biden both can be in huge tax trouble over this. IRS? Anyone? Bueler? Bueler?
I despise Hunter, but I don’t see any issues here. It’s probably structured as a loan, which would bypass any gift caps. Even exceeding the gift cap is no issue, as there’s an $11.7mm lifetime exclusion. If this money is a loan, and is forgiven at a later date, then Hunter would have a tax liability for the amount cancelled.
In the case of gifts, the person giving the gift is responsible for gift taxes (not the recipient), but with the lifetime exclusion, this is a non-issue.

The Thrift Savings Program chose right now to do a universal account update and forced password change. Beneficiary designations have failed to transfer, employees cannot access their accounts to withdraw funds or get housing loans, and participants cannot change their asset allocations.
You may chalk it up to more Biden administration incompetence instead of malice, but this affects hundreds of thousands of Americans (maybe millions if you include all the retirees who did not roll over their funds after retirement), and has never happened before. Single moms making a GS 7 salary as a secretary are in this mix, so don’t cheer.
Tomorrow some apparently very bad inflation numbers are coming out. If the market takes a 20 percent header in response over the next week, guess who will be frozen into their current positions and unable to respond or go to cash?

On Wednesday morning Moderna released supposedly positive data from a trial of its Omicron-specific booster mRNA shot.
Do NOT be fooled by the company’s spin on the data – a claim credulous reporters are gladly abetting.
In reality, the trial showed that Omicron-specific boosters don’t work very well against the Omicron variant. Even after being given an booster designed against Omicron, people made far fewer neutralizing antibodies against it than they did against the original coronavirus – which of course is no longer a threat.
How could Moderna say the trial succeeded, then? Because the Omicron booster did produce somewhat more neutralizing antibodies against Omicron than the original Moderna booster did.
The problem with this comparison is that the original booster basically stops working against Omicron after a few weeks. In fact, a growing body of evidence suggests that boosted people are MORE likely to be infected with Omicron than the unvaccinated.
So the Omicron booster works marginally better against Omicron than the original booster – which very quickly doesn’t work at all.

There is no quick fix to ease America’s pain at the pump because refiners struggle to meet the demand for diesel and gasoline, sending fuel prices soaring due to declining national stockpiles and fears of shortages.
The latest Energy Information Administration (EIA) data shows the U.S. refining capacity is structurally short and down 1 million barrels from April 2020 (a month after the lockdowns began) to 17.95 million bpd as of June.
“When the coronavirus pandemic occurred, demand for global oil was not expected to fall for a long time, and yet so much refining capacity was cut permanently,” Ravi Ramdas, managing director of energy consultancy Peninsula Energy, told Reuters.
