It’s something a little different for this crowd, but the civil lawsuits between Hollywood actor Johnny Depp and his former wife, actress Amber Heard, have concluded. A jury found Ms. Heard acted with malicious intent when she defamed her former husband Mr. Depp with accusations of abuse.
The jury awarded Mr. Depp $10 million in compensatory damages, and $5 million in punitive damages which are an outcome of the ‘malicious intent‘ finding. However, the punitive damages are limited by law to $350,000. On the three specific issues cited for consideration by the jury, the jurors all found Ms. Heard was guilty of lying, fabricating and targeting her former spouse with false claims. {LINK} Result, Ms. Heard owes Mr. Depp $10,350,000.
Additionally, for her side of the countersuit, Ms. Heard was awarded $2 million as compensatory damages against Mr. Depp’s lawyer for one issue within a Daily Mail article where the Depp representative accused Ms. Heard of manufacturing a confrontation for publicity. The net result of all the legal action is Ms. Heard owes Mr Depp $8.35 million.
With the three major issues around the litigation determined by the jury in favor of Mr. Depp, the actor released the following statement:
“Six years ago, my life, the life of my children, the lives of those closest to me, and also, the lives of the people who for many, many years have supported and believed in me were forever changed.
All in the blink of an eye.
False, very serious and criminal allegations were levied at me via the media, which triggered an endless barrage of hateful content, although no charges were ever brought against me. It had already traveled around the world twice within a nanosecond and it had a seismic impact on my life and my career.
And six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled.
My decision to pursue this case, knowing very well the height of the legal hurdles that I would be facing and the inevitable, worldwide spectacle into my life, was only made after considerable thought.
From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome. Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me. I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that.

I think it actually was a compromise verdict by the jury so as to overcome a hung jury. This explains why they deliberated so long and when they came back today, had not yet decided on monetary damages.

Usually, insurance companies who offer such policies have a roster of attorneys off of which they will hire attorneys for the client rather than pay fees for an attorney hired by the client. I doubt AH’s insurance will cover fees since she hired her own lawyers. In CA, you have to prove economic loss caused by the defamation [unless its a certain type of egregious defamation – eg. falsely accusing someone of a crime or infectious disease – econ loss is presumed]. Defamation law in VA may be different, but I doubt it – the general legal concepts are standardized across the nation.
So Heard proved $2mil. in lost income traceable to that article? Or some other proof of econ. loss? Without that, in CA the verdict could be vacated by the judge. I expect a motion by Depps lawyers will be filed to reduce or vacate Heard’s award. Whether or not the statement was false probably won’t be touched [too hard, jury decided it was “false” and any supporting evidence will likely be enough to sustain verdict on that issue no matter the judge’s opinion of the strength of that evidence]

One day last week I went to watch a Viva Frei show on the Tamara Lich bail re-hearing, and it turned out I missed it and ended up listening to them talking about this trial instead for a short bit. The topic was how much it was costing Depp. The answer is most likely a whole lot more than the award. But then again, when you have money to blow, Y guess there is no price you wouldn’t pay to restore your reputation and integrity.
All too many men can only lick their wounds and get as far away from the monsters as they can post-woman.

This case is huge in terms of culture shift. Remember the #metoo movement and “believe every woman?” I doubt Depp could have won this trial several years ago. Methinks higher prices at the gas pump, baby formula shortages, and open borders have made Americans more cynical, less gullible. People are more tolerant and willing to believe all sorts of rubbish when life is good. “Yeah, yeah, just pass the gray Poupon.” But watch out once life starts to hit the skids.
It was never Believe Every Woman. It was go into the situation believing women just as much as men.

I wish my brother could have a case decided as fast as this case. It has been 5 and half years of fighting in court and the evil insurance company keeps being allowed delays after delays. Do they own the courts or why else do judges keep allowing the big boy insurance companies to stall for YEARS when they sure as Hell expect their insurance payments on time or your policy is cancelled.
The most interesting part of the trial –the ACLU ghost wrote the WAPO Op Ed for Amber Heard. After she promised to donate millions, which she never did. The ACLU is trash.
