f your friendly public health bureaucrats wanted to prove influenza shots reduced influenza deaths, they could do so lickety-split.
They would just have to run a large randomized controlled trial (ideally two or three trials, over two or three flu seasons) that enrolled, say, 25,000 elderly people at high risk of death from flu and split them into placebo and flu shot groups.
This trial would be perfectly ethical, because at the moment we have clinical equipoise – a fancy way of saying that no one really knows if the shot does any good. It would cost a tiny fraction of what we now spend on flu shots, not to mention the associated flu shot advertising campaigns.
And it would give us a definitive answer. Within a few months after the end of flu season we would know – not guess, know – whether flu vaccines actually reduced flu deaths. We could even look at ALL-CAUSE mortality, and find out whether the vaccine might be causing other problems that we are not catching (or possibly even have some hidden benefits, who knows? That’s why you run the trial!).
So why haven’t your friendly public health bureaucrats run this trial. They have pushed these shots increasingly hard for the last 40 years, and especially the last 10. Don’t they WANT to know if they work?

I suspect I caught swine flu after looking after college age daughter who had caught it while babysitting right before. Thanksgiving holiday. She was too sick to drive home. I went to campus to care for her.

That’s when Dr. Humphries started doing research into immunology, vaccines, how they are made, etc. and she wrote her findings in her book (she basically says that everything we have been told about vaccines is just big-pharma propaganda–she has charts in her books demonstrating that all the childhood illnesses were on their way out long before the vaccines came along). If you can find some of her presentations online, they are worth watching.

I recently saw a youtube doc talking about hhow the government and medical profession are killing people over time by using out dated diagnostic and treatment techniques concerning diabeties, glucose insulin etc.
I was so impressed I quit sugar completely 12 days ago. As a result I have specifically noticed my brain fog has deminished and my memory is making a strong comeback!!

Regarding infant mortality. The US counts deaths from birth wheras Europe and some other countries do not count deaths of babies born alive but die within a month, or 6 mos or a year as infant morality. It skews our statistics negatively.

Good point, given the development of the planet in the last couple centuries, there are very few undeveloped frontiers to escape to and develop. America was one at one time and why it became the melting pot it has. My family escaped the Bolsheviks and came here, at great cost (sickness and death), because it was truly a land of opportunity.

In the 80’s I read an article that was about predictions for the future. One prediction was that homosexuality would be pushed as a means to reduce the birthrate and over population.

I don’t think it’s only 3.5% anymore. The way they have pushed this through the schools, they have definitely gained more young people. I now have a niece and nephew with my brother, two out of three of his children, being gay. My sister has three boys and one girl, and her daughter is gay. I believe these kids are going through normal teenage issues, and they are pushed into the gay community for acceptance. We used to get this through our churches. It is definitely a way to reduce family life and having children.

“Marriage” is not some novel or technical term, it has been understood since time immemorial to be a union of opposite genders.
Allowing Judicial alteration of the word to mean anything other than the union of opposite genders means future Judicial alterations must also be allowed. Maybe we should crowd source the farmers and those who can produce the primary ingredients necessary for food production.
Parallel economy. Corporate farming has dominated the industry. Monopolies are hard to bust without bloodshed but it is possible. However, it means we must interact with each other and support each other.
Last night a carton of eggs appeared on the entry hall table while I was sleeping. How? The door was open as it always is and the ‘chicken lady’ down the road stopped by with a gift. I had a couple this morning in an omelette.
No interactions with grocery stores, no fuel to drive 20 miles to town, no using cash or a credit card, people working together. Make the goal to do that as much as possible and starve the corporations and government as much as possible until they come after us, then kill as many of their soldiers as possible. I don’t care what uniform they wear, they are the enemy. They’ve proven it. In spades. But of course we can talk here about them killing us and destroying our lives. That’s permitted. What a joke.

I’ve never seen an obituary page with this sort of toll among young people and given the absence of older people, who die all the time of old age, of course, the magnitude of this wave of death is quite clear.
We all know good and ******n well why these younger people died. “Died suddenly”, absent a car crash (which would be listed) or OD (which is sometimes not since an obit is typically not intended to shame anyone) doesn’t happen in young people on a statistical basis. Yes, young people do die — they get cancer, they die of belief they are Superman (especially common in young males) and they also, in certain demographics, have a habit of getting shot, stabbed and similar — none of which is “died suddenly”.
If you want a calibration on exactly how ridiculous this pattern of death is you can have it quite-easily. You see, there are a few people who were young and killed the usual ways young people die. A couple of motorcycle accidents. Childhood cancer and another caused by asbestos. Misfortune in the backcountry. A man convicted of a crime who killed himself before sentencing. And a Covid-19 death, an illness that got the better of the person.
But what of the rest?

But for the rest…outside of that, it’s a result of many things…usually suicide from a personality disorder, ie Anorexia, bipolar depression etc. Normally in white, highly educated households. Back in November 2021, Fidelity was “advising” and discussing via articles as well as their Market related Webinars that Mid-Caps and Small Caps would have big returns in Spring 2022. Not that the Character of Fidelity is any better than Vanguard but the gains you describe were being “advertised”, if not PRE-PLANNED.
I swear it was planned to increase tax revenue, while shafting the fund owners. Distributions for mid/small cap and some other types of funds generally aren’t made until end of year, so there’s no way of knowing what’s going to hit you as far as tax consequences for that year. But tax year 2021 is INSANE. 4X the taxes we owe from previous years, and had no way of knowing it was coming, as the funds distributed only the very end of Dec. 2021. If I had been on top of it during/after Christmas time I might have caught those distributions and sold something at a loss to counter the tax consequences. But I wasn’t because of obvious reasons but also because this never happened before to this extent, and I looked back 10 years into these funds. Never happened like this. Something was up, I feel it in my bones. I wish I could post a screenshot of the pdf Vanguard prospectus, but I can’t figure out how to do that. Traditional Market technical metrics no longer can be trusted as the Whales can move amounts cash and create headlines as they desire to impact market performance, using super computers and algorithms.
Laugh if you want but it is worth every penny of the less than 1/2 percent in fees sacrificed to let Fidelity Manage my larger investment funds for the past 10 years. I may not make the big killings some make or claim but I am still well over the 7% average gain (given the poorest market condition) programmed into most long term investment models, for my risk and investment profile.
I wouldn’t laugh at you using an investment advisor at Fidelity, heck, it’s almost like if you can’t beat them join them at this point.

Hmmmm…seems to be a recent pattern emerging.
While there will always be stocks that do bad vs stocks that do good, and ‘winners’ who rig the game to vast wealth and ‘losers’ who can’t pick a winner put when they somehow do pick one, make sure to hold it until it loses, for the most part, the stock market all goes up and down together.
When your advisor is doing well, everybody’s adviser is also doing well. It is a great thing to have one that consistently does better than others.
Sometimes a genius shows up who figures out how to be that great advisor. Invariably people flock to him and his portfolio grows so large that he can’t work that magic anymore. Even if that doesn’t happen, he is watched and that wisdom is made common and thus no longer exploitable.
The exception is just those who do the hard work of examining companies for value and weakness, investing in the former and avoiding the latter. Still susceptible to market swings, and still with wins and losses, such an advisor ekes out and averages a steady gain.
What is worse, is that there are many hidden fees in our investments. Not just the ones charged to you. It is these fees that rob us blind. Some funds have huge teams constantly trading and charging you dearly. But you don’t see the fee in your statements. You can look it up. But whatever the gain or loss they report to you, it is after taking their fees.
Vanguard has some index funds with incredibly low fees. Not as much effort goes into keeping a fund balanced like an index. But you only do slightly lower than the index. You can never be better. Over time, fees only 0.04% will give a much better result than fees of 1-2%. But again even though it is nearly impossible to sustain performance better than the market, it is still possible for a normal fund, but impossible for an index fund.
As far as turnover goes, it makes a big difference if it is inside a tax deferred account, IRA, 401k, or in an after tax account. Everything done inside an after tax account has to be taxed upon sale. Funds with large crowds of staff, buying and selling willy-nilly can deliver a large tax bill as well as large fees for your troubles. But at least you had gains to be taxed. You may find yourself paying another expert to deal with your taxes.
Everybody makes this hard. The government with its myriad rules, ever changing, ever expanding. The advisors and the fund managers all trying to make money from you.
Remember, if you don’t know who the mark is when you sit down at the poker table, you are the mark. And if you think you know who the mark is, you are probably also a mark.
I do my own and have had returns 4-5 times yours. A 7% return over the last 10 years is extremely modest given we had huge gains especially during the Trump years.
There are studies that show a fund manager does no better than the fund owner. It’s not hard to do it yourself, but do what makes you comfortable.
I noticed that the S&P was falling until shortly after they passed trillions of dollars in BBB and trillions “for” the Ukraine. It made me wonder if they weren’t laundering money back to those companies to keep their stock from falling.
I got slammed this year on cap gains. My cap gains more than doubled from mutual funds. I had to pay $4K more in taxes this year.
At recent Market Related Webinars and news articles I have read (on a few Major Financial Company Sites) stated that 2021 was an abnormal investment yield year with returns of approximately 40% in some cases related to more than COVID Shamdemic stuff. The sites did point out that this year will not settle down until after November.
I was saved by my now 5 year habit to pad my monthly Federal Tax Payments, as a hedge vs the volatility index issues, I cite above. Yep, bad on me because I give Uncle Sam a free loan each year but I did not write checks at the end of those years nor risk a 10% underpayment fine either.
With all the wild crap being bandied about in the new “Federal Budget” related legislation, I do not plan to halt that practice any time soon. Since 2009, the democrats definition of “rich” has ranged from $10 million in 2009 to $250K in 2016, back to Billions, now Millions and actually $400K today.

I called them. The fund mgr sold a sh!tload of holding in Dec and distributed them as capital gains. I am absolutely certain the Biden administration called the investment houses and told them to sell the most profitable holdings so as to force the owners of those funds to incur massive CG in 2021 to incur a huge tax liability. That is most certainly why Elon Musk sold billions in stock in Nov-Dec so he could pay his CG tax. Except he got advance notice of this and we didn’t.
The proposed tax on unrealized CG didn’t get traction last year, which is a different situation, so they came up with a scheme for fund managers to sell massive holdings at a profit and unload us with the tax liability.

1) Ketanji Brown-Jackson does not seem quick enough on her feet to be a Supreme Court Justice. seems like she would have been more prepared regardless of politics.

Pinellas county is currently represented by a typical Florida GOP representative named Charlie Crist. He used to be governor where he gained fame as a big Obama supporter. As with all career politicians, he can’t stand not being in power so he demeaned himself into being a House representative.
Oh. He also switched to Democrat (didn’t change his ideology, just registration). He won his seat over another GOP representative named Jolly. Jolly gained fame for being a NeverTrumper and now does guest appearances on MSNBC.

Is the US about to go the way of Japan?
The Japanese yen tanked after the Bank of Japan vowed to buy an unlimited number of Japanese government bonds in order to hold the 10-year yield under its 0.25% target.
This is literally quantitative easing infinity. If the central bank is going to buy an “unlimited” quantity of bonds, that means it will create an unlimited quantity of yen out of thin air.
No wonder the yen tanked.
The Bank of Japan followed through, buying just over $500 million in bonds on Monday and another $2 billion on Tuesday morning.
Think about this from an investor perspective. If the Bank of Japan is willing to buy bonds at an artificially high price, why wouldn’t you sell your bonds to them? This creates a scenario where the central bank could potentially own virtually all of the government’s bonds if it follows through with this scheme to the bitter end.
Why did the Japanese central bank make this extraordinary move? Why is the Bank of Japan price-fixing the yield on government bonds? Why is it trying to control the long end of the yield curve?
The Bank of Japan has been monetizing Japanese government debt for decades. The debt to GDP ratio in Japan is at about 250%. They justified this by claiming there wasn’t enough inflation in Japan. In fact, Japanese officials have blamed the economic malaise in the country on a lack of inflation. In his podcast, Peter Schiff said this has been a lie all along. The lack of rising prices isn’t a bad thing.
Today, CPI in Japan is 2.7% and wholesale inflation is 9,3%.
How can anybody argue that the problem in Japan now is not enough inflation and the Bank of Japan should double-down, in fact, infinity-down on the very policy that was pursued when their goal was more inflation?”
If the Bank of Japan’s goal was to create more inflation, it succeeded. Why doesn’t it now let interest rates rise? Why keep printing money?
No. They’ve got all this inflation, and apparently, they need more. Apparently, it’s not enough. What that shows you is that this was never about inflation.”
So, what is it about?
Why was the Bank of Japan buying all of these government bonds? Why was it trying to keep interest rates from going up? Because the Japanese government has so much debt that if interest rates went up, all hell would break loose because the Japanese government would then have to level with Japanese voters and say, ‘You know what? We racked up all of this debt. Time to pay the piper. We’re going to have to have huge tax increases to cover this exploding debt burden.’”
Of course, Japanese politicians don’t want to be held accountable for their reckless spending. They don’t want to have to give voters the bitter medicine of tax increases. They don’t want to cut government spending. So, the only way they can spare the Japanese people from higher taxes is to buy bonds, monetize the debt and keep interest rates artificially low.
But now they have an inflation problem. In fact, they likely had one all along. The Bank of Japan’s monetary policy likely robbed the Japanese of falling prices they would have enjoyed from their productivity. But now, prices are rising and the central bank is pouring gasoline on the fire because it’s more concerned about the Japanese government’s ability to service its debt.
Peter said he thinks at some point, the Bank of Japan will have to flip and turn away from this extraordinary loose monetary policy. If it doesn’t, the central bank’s balance sheet will explode. And inflation will explode.
The Japanese are going to get clobbered by the inflation tax. The Bank of Japan is trying to spare Japanese politicians from the embarrassment of having to raise taxes. Well, the Japanese public are going to pay taxes one way or another. It’s either going to be official tax increases or it’s going to be the inflation tax.”
