In the event of a draft, there would be something like 70% or more who could not qualify for the military because of overweight, other health issues, drug addictions, criminal convictions. Not sure they shouldn’t be put to work doing something useful… but:
One downside of this would be the enormous cost. Also, military draftees, exceptions noted, historically have not been very productive soldiers (e.g. only 15% bothered to fire weapons in combat in Vietnam.) Another downside is that a nonexclusive draft seems like the ideal way to force an entire generation into serfdom and the equivalent of welfare., while allowing for bogus exceptions for the “entitled class”.

So on insta today- one of my husbands employees had a video post. The post was teachers telling kids to be happy to be done with their masks (in Cali today was the first day) and she compared it to “republicans” saying “don’t indoctrinate our kids”. So now going back to “normal” is indoctrination? I can’t even make it make sense 😇🤮
It is shocking to me when these teachers go political since I was taught to keep my politics to myself. In 1988 I was substituting in a Calif. school. My class was together with two adjacent classes when one teacher went on a rif against Republicans. It shocked me then, as your example shocks me now.
However, even the curriculum has been corrupted by politics. Fourth graders are not taught long division because of racism. Besides, they have calculators now. Memorizing an algorithm is, after all, only using “lower order thinking skills”, as if there were any such thing. There are just different brain regions. I prefer to teach to the whole brain.
At the college where I teach in Texas, we are being forced to pare the curriculum down to a minimum because of racism. We are trying to achieve “equity”. We dropped the college algebra requirement for statistics because we need a “pathway” for women and minorities to succeed at “math”. We then had a remedial/developmental class as prerequisite, but then we were forced to drop all remedial classes, so now the only prerequisite is English. Remedial classes made too many requirements of women and minorities, so we just brushed them away and placed the students into college algebra with a pat on the back and a good luck. Of course, instructors have no alternative but to dumb down their classes.
Students pass from college algebra to trigonometry without the necessary skills, so now the college wants to drop trig and place students into precalculus. Next, they will dumb down calculus. What will become of engineering if our students are not well-trained in math? We cannot have an advanced technological society if we don’t maintain standards in math. Americans will be displaced by millions of competent Chinese engineers. What will Americans be good for. You are the next cattle. Go in bovine subservience.

Mr friend teaches at the pharmacy college in Tampa, FL and has nightmare stories of being told to pass students who weren’t even close to making the grade. It’s insane, and really frustrating to her.
The last place where I taught while in Calif was CSUMB. I happened to give an F to a Black female calculus student. My dean called me into her office for a dressing down, but I refused to change the grade. That was when I figured that I needed to leave Calif.

When I joined the faculty at Minnesota in 1977, we had remedial programs in 2 departments (Math and Computer Science). In 1989, my department became the 41st to institute a remedial program. Five year degree programs began to replace the traditional four year, but we could never get ahead of the ongoing rot in K-12 public education. Dumbing down content became widespread, and the few of us who resisted this tactic in the liberal arts became outcasts. Divides in student preparation for college level work became more and more obvious once the no child left behind agenda went into effect. Home schooled students, and those who had attended private academies, possessed the necessary literacy and critical thinking skills to succeed– and still did when I retired in 2014. Alas, by that point the publicly educated were functioning at what I considered to be an 8th grade level, with students coming through religiously affiliated school systems on a playing field that I left behind in the 10th and 11th grades– and I’m a graduate of the Los Angeles city school system.
There is a good and compelling reason why we have been outsourcing technical work to other countries, and using visa programs to bring in people with skills superior to our own graduates.
It’s a sad and pathetic state of affairs.

We are at the one-month mark into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and it looks like things are only set to get bloodier. Short of a sudden ceasefire and a robust peace deal, which some would argue seems less feasible with each passing day, the war will grind on. But regardless of if Russia achieves its military objectives in the country, it has already lost in nearly every conceivable way. What’s worse is what awaits them if they succeed in conquering Ukraine’s territory — an insurgency the likes of which we have never seen. It will be one funded by the richest nations on earth and run by hardened fighters in a country absolutely awash with advanced anti-armor and anti-aircraft weaponry. This, combined with a whole slew of other factors I detailed over three weeks ago — which are more relevant now than they were then — results in the conclusion that there is no conceivable path to a positive outcome to this conflict for Russia. It can win any battle and seize any city, but the reality is that the country has already lost.
Russia massively miscalculated a number of critical tactical realities. These include the Ukrainian people’s cohesiveness and willingness to fight, the bravery of Ukraine’s political leadership, its air defenses’ abilities and knack for survival, and NATO and the European Union’s resolve.
What’s worse, Russia severely overestimated its own capabilities. These included the effectiveness of its own air force, the required quantity and reliability of its standoff weaponry, the quality and resolve of its ground forces, and especially the logistics necessary to support them beyond a single opening blitz. Even the Russian military’s ability to deploy realistic planning and effective command and control seemed to disintegrate just days into the invasion. There still appears to be little integration or deconfliction between various field commanders and no single commander leading the war effort.

While it has been amazing to watch Ukraine hold off Russia in many areas in the country, we are getting a skewed view of the conflict by default. Russia still has significant basic hardware and manpower to throw at its misguided military operation and the leadership in Moscow seems to have no problem tossing more lives and pieces of equipment down into the dark hole it has already dug itself into. But conquering the territory within Ukraine’s borders is really just the easy part, and it has clearly proven not to have been easy at all. What comes after would be the true challenge — an insurgency like no other we have seen before — one that Russia has next to no chance of overcoming.
The flow of advanced man-portable anti-aircraft and anti-vehicle weaponry into Ukrainian hands has drastically increased since the war began. The stark reality is that there are now tens of thousands of anti-tank guided missiles and thousands of man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) floating around the country with more on the way. Small arms, unguided rockets, and ammunition are also flowing into Ukraine from the west in huge quantities.
While all this is very problematic for the invading Russian force, it is a downright death sentence to any provisional or stooge government and its security forces that Russia plans to install should the legitimately-elected Ukrainian government fall.
With so much advanced weaponry already floating around the country and throngs of battle-hardened Ukrainians now proficient in how to use it in combat, any puppet administration and its facilitators will have no way to move around the country and execute their duties. Roads will become hellish missile engagement zones with no amount of armor capable of protecting a vehicle’s inhabitants. Travel by fixed-wing aircraft will be highly dangerous with airports becoming MANPADS death traps and helicopters will be juicy targets no matter where they go. These threats can emanate from virtually anywhere and melt back into the population in an instant.
While Javelins, NLAWs, and Stingers get the attention, the amount of small arms — assault rifles, carbines, pistols, and sniper rifles — that are also entering the country equally spells doom for any form of Russian occupation. When paired with a combat-experienced civilian fighting force, in addition to a battle-hardened army, all united with a burning hatred for the Russians who came without cause to kill their loved ones, decimate their cities and burn their countryside, every single bullet will become a serious threat. By the time an occupation begins, so many will know how to use those bullets, they will cause maximum pain on the occupying Russians and the sympathizers around them.
No Russian soldier or collaborator will be safe to move about. The environment will be entirely weaponized and extremely hostile. In fact, successful hits on Russian stooge government plants have already begun. So have the use of roadside bombs and mines — the same low-cost improvized tactics that proved so deadly for U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan are already migrating to Ukraine to be employed alongside missiles costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The Russian military is both very professional and very large. But their objectives are very specific – as Putin said at the beginning of the operation. They are not there to conquer Ukraine and probably will not remove their useful idiot. They are there to liberate the people of two eastern provinces which were under attack by Ukranians for many years, and they are going to slaughter a lot of Nazis. Yes, real Nazis. They intend to protect other civilians as best they can. But the same cannot be said for the Ukranian government.

My one suggestion is that you begin thinking about the whole of the battlefield, and not just its most visible sliver. For example, one of Russia’s responses to sanctions has been very quietly to shut down its main Caspian Sea pipeline for “repairs.” These will take at least two months, and the practical effect is that Europe just lost another 1 million barrels of oil per day. Next up is the sale of Russian oil to countries deemed adversaries (read the EU) in Russian rubles. The EU will quickly find itself with no other option than to buy rubles with euros, the net effect of which will be that the EU will be financing a portion of the Russian war effort.
And meanwhile, something has gone badly wrong with Nigeria’s pipeline system, and Nigeria is an OPEC state …
