Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan
and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days,
to be tempted by the devil.
He ate nothing during those days,
and when they were over he was hungry.
The devil said to him,
“If you are the Son of God,
command this stone to become bread.”
Jesus answered him,
“It is written, One does not live on bread alone.”
Then he took him up and showed him
all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant.
The devil said to him,
“I shall give to you all this power and glory;
for it has been handed over to me,
and I may give it to whomever I wish.
All this will be yours, if you worship me.”
Jesus said to him in reply,
“It is written
You shall worship the Lord, your God,
and him alone shall you serve.”
Then he led him to Jerusalem,
made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him,
“If you are the Son of God,
throw yourself down from here, for it is written:
He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,
and:
With their hands they will support you,
lest you dash your foot against a stone.”
Jesus said to him in reply,
“It also says,
You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.”
When the devil had finished every temptation,
he departed from him for a time.

Oh GOD , pride of man …. broken in the dust again.
Turn around go back down , back the way you came
Terror is on every sign , though our leaders are dismayed
All those who place their faith in fire , in fire their faith shall be repaid
Oh, GOD , pride of man
Broken in the dust again
Quicksilver Messenger Service
Thank you for the link. Never heard that one.
Thanks for the link.
Appropriate for these times. Spot on.
Interesting. I never heard that version. The first version I heard was by Quicksilver Messenger Service, though it was actually written by Hamilton Camp.
With Putin’s threats the apocalyptic imagery in the seems too close to home..
What was this song written about?
In a word , hubris.
A college station was playing it after 9 / 11 , it’s been on my spirit all week.
First verse, destruction of Sodom and Gamorah by fireballs. Second verse, destruction of Babylon by Cyrus the Persian (,who released the people of Judah from their captivity, which was their punishment for worshipping false idols and sacrificing their children in the First Temple to Moloch/the Ba”als (Lords))
You just shook loose a memory!
I saw them in concert in AZ a lo-o-ng time ago.
Dino Valenti and Nicky Hopkins were great!
Joe Walsh was there, too., promoting his first album after James Gang stopped and Barnstorm began.
‘ long time ago when we was Fab ‘
Sorry Flyover for the flag. It’s these crooked fingers. Enjoyed Pride of Man. Thank you for that.
I was backstage and partied with Quicksilver Messenger Service in Boca Raton, Florida. It was either 1971 or 72. A band called Marlo opened for them.
Thank you for that reminder Menagerie.
I will reflect on this message..
Thank you Menagerie !
Praying and Reflecting !
Jesus is the way. “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.”
A better verse in the hymn In times like these you need an anchor
I wasn’t familiar with the song. I looked it up. Thank you, Texasmom! And, yes, with the whole world flailing about like a ship in a storm — we definitely need an anchor.
“The general human failing is to want what is right and important, but at the same time not to commit to the kind of life that will produce the action we know to be right and the condition we want to enjoy. This is the feature of human character that explains why the road to hell is paved with good intentions. We intend what is right, but we avoid the life that would make it reality.”

The Spirit of the Disciplines: Understanding How God Changes Lives
You can read part of the first chapter of this book, which includes the above text, if you find the book on Amazon and then click on the “Look Inside” link just above the image of the book.
This is my read for this Easter season. I highly recommend it to all my fellow Treepers.
Who is the painter? It is common courtesy to name the artist!
Found it on an image search, unaccredited. So, that makes me discourteous. Sorry.
A picture worth a thousand words! Thank you — haunting!
Not at all, of course that excuse is valid. 🙂
Actually, the word “reason” seems the more appropriate word than “excuse.”
Thanks to a commenter below you can now credit the work to R Ceesay, who I never heard of before.
She deserves it.

Thank you for finding the picture, Veritas!
Thank you.
not very nice.
I am looking for this painting – it has grabbed me
It is really a good one, and that is why I asked about the painter, it was not to be grumpy…
Yet you failed….
See how word choices affect tone?
You could have simply asked the question, without the snide last sentence, calling menagerie discourteous….but you didn’t….just like I could have used a word other than ‘failed’….or said nothing at all.
Way to ruin a beautiful Easter message.
Exactly right AMK. And furthermore…”that excuse is valid”. Excuse???? How about “reason”?
My apologies Menagerie, for being off topic and thank you for the wonderful message.May the good Lord bless us all this Lenten season. Pax vobis.
As a norwegian troll english is obviously not my first language, so my choice of words might not be optimal.
«Artist unknown» could have been noted under that picture anyway…
Or not…
Your English is too perfect for your excuse to be believed. Just say sorry Menagerie I am in a bad mood.
Well, now we have the painters name… but still not credited under her work.
I notified her that TCH is showing her painting, and it is much admired.. She answered and thanked me.

”Even though I walk through the Valley of Death…”
That prayer has been on my mind as I took the jab as forced by my employer. Seizure meds are $2300.00 without insurance(and sure to go up again thanks to Brandon).
Oh, my… My heart aches for you and for all experiencing similar conditions. Praying!
Thank you, Menagerie.
…When the devil had finished every temptation,…
Seems that might be a couple of key words on which we should focus both historically in The Word as well as in our lives today.
Revealingly, Jesus never questions the devil’s authority to hand over the earth’s kingdoms. The latter is indeed the prince of this earth, as is becoming more evident each day.
Because the Lords Kingdom is in heaven!
Thank you full spectrum, that observation was like a light switch for me today. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the here and now and get distracted from what the Lord has promised.
Ah, of course. Thanks for bringing it full spectrum.
Excellent observation, and it gives me much room for thought. Even though it makes me lose my breath a bit. Thank you.
I needed that reminder, about putting my God to the test, right at this time.
Thank you, Menagerie.
For this Lenten season I have given up speaking negatively. Quite the difficult task. It is so easy to fall prey to the negative yet my God has so richly blessed me. Truly my land lines have fallen in pleasant places. Thank You Jesus!
Let us all be like our Savior who did not trade the invaluable things of the Kingdom of God for the empty promises of Satan. Christ is our Rock on whom we must trust with everything in our lives. May you all seek to give God glory in everything you do.
he departed Him for a time.

One of my favorite images from this gospel
Fabulous!
This sermon starts with the passage Menagerie posted above. In it “power and glory” are translated as “dominion” and Pastor Robert Morris takes it all the way through Easter. During Lent I thought this was an appropriate video. Interesting that the corrupt voting system used to steal elections for leftists/communists is arrogantly called Dominion Voting Systems! Pastor Morris goes to great lengths to explain exactly who has dominion! I’m not a theologian trying to start any Biblical fight here I just thought this was a very good sermon!
Others had mentioned your observation when then name of the not-a-vote systems became known. I don’t believe in coincidences
Our church instead of doing a Bible study has decided to do a series by Pastor Morris, book, videos, and work book. I had never heard of him. The video they showed was really good. Unfortunately they can’t quite get their selves together in deciding how to proceed. Makes it frustrating. Anyway, thanks for the link. I will watch later, I am sure it will be interesting.
Praise to the Lord Jesus Christ for bearing our sin on The Cross, to finish His Work of the Substitutionary Atonement!
And He did more – defeating death and the grave. With yet more to come, when He returns.
I needed to read these post, especially today. I’ve been consumed in rage and bitterness at what we’ve witnessed with evil running rampant, while the righteous are persecuted. I KNOW God is sovereign and He will destroy the wicked. I also know he doesn’t act on our schedule. I know I have the mindset of Peter….I want to cut off the enemies ear. I struggle with The Christ “turning the other cheek” and the one turning over the tables in The Temple, chasing the money changers with a whip. I suppose Christ demonstrated there are times for both. My pride is a thorn that reminds me of my flaws and need for His strength.
… whereas our Leftist friends celebrate Mardi Gras from Fat Tuesday all the way to Easter and beyond. Constant drunkenness and debauchery … and God knows WHAT goes on in the back room of pizza shops.
I’m giving up Fox News for Lent. Instead, I will get some more WORK done around the house, and keep my mind free from propaganda
That is excellent! You will not miss it and your life will improve greatly.
Ya. I was down to just Tucker, and now he is playing rope-a-dope about Ukraine rather than speak truth, so bye bye Tucker too.
I gave it up Nov 4, 2021.
After Dobbs left, we closed the sidekick channel as well.
We are better informed from alt news now.
The devil knew who he was talking to. I was taught that the original meaning was
“ Since you keep on being the Son of God”
Just skip the cross, take this short cut , take the easy road.
Doesn’t that sound a little familiar?
But for the joy set before Him he chose us instead of the easy road.
He wrote our names in his book before anything was even created.
And his goal is to present us to the Father without blame.
The price he paid once ;was sufficient for whosoever will….. Being full of the Holy Spirit is the only way to face this present battle .
Ask him for these precious gifts that come with a promise of eternal life and joy for us that we can KNOW Him.
Let’s not forget, the fall was down. Mankind is depraved, wicked and sinful—All of us. The great hope, in Jesus we have hope, eternal life and salvation. Our faith, the gift from God, lest any man boast.
“..for it has been handed over to me,
and I may give it to whomever I wish.”
Obviously, so.
This morning our Anglican priest used the temptations of Jesus as his sermon theme. While Jesus had the strength of mind to refute the devil on every score, but ‘man’, generic term, yields to the temptation that he can do it all himself without God’s help, underscoring a lack of faith and trust in the Lord’s mercy and overriding care for His children on earth. Somehow Putin and his policies seem to fall into that in that category.
AMEN! OUR RIGHTEOUS SAVIOR REMAINED PERFECT, WITHOUT SIN OR BLEMISH! HALLELUJAH TO THE LAMB OF GOD!
“If any man is in Christ he is a new creature the old things have passed away behold new things have come!”
New Man Theology
To every believer: is that the old self or the new self that your heart soul mind and strength is focused on?
Who are you in Christ Jesus? That is the main question in life.
