So, similar things apply today: have any of our present-day “geniuses” in D.C. studied Byzantine History and the effects of Byzantine foreign policy on their students, the Slavs, and specifically the Russians, who called their capital Moscow “The Third Rome” (after the falls of Rome in the 400’s A.D. and “Nova Roma” i.e. Constantinople in 1453) ?

The Russians also paid the greatest price in blood during WW2 – and yet it was they who destroyed the German Wermacht and(!) they are also the ones who actually caused Japan to surrender. (The atomic bombs didn’t do it.) They declared war on Japan, crushed a crack Japanese army in Manchuria in a matter of weeks, and announced that they would come to Tokyo from the west … a very short sea journey. Japan knew they now had a choice of who to surrender to, so they chose the allies.
When Putin talks about “Nazis,” he well knows what they can do. He also understands a political leader who is dying of Alzheimer’s, because he remembers Lenoid Brezhnev – who ultimately did. (No. Don’t watch the videos of his last attempt to address his nation.)
I highly doubt that crack Japanese Army had much supplies considering the tight blockade around Japan with surface warships and submarines. Japan’s Navy was totally destroyed. Including their merchant marine. All their major cities was destroyed, mostly by fire bombing. So I imagine that so called crack Army was very hungry.
The Soviets did destroy the German Army. But they never would have accomplished that if it had not been for lend lease.
The crack troops had long since been pulled and squandered in different locations.
But Russia had won a border war in 1939, and they only got stronger fighting the Germans. While the Japanese didn’t grow stronger.
I am not sure if those forces were hungry. Japan had to be fed with food from outside Japan, and those troops were outside Japan.
Japan had also industrialized Korea. So I don’t know if those troops lacked food or supplies. Still possible. Also, that sea was highly protected and had many shallow coastal waters. There is a great book about a submarine task force that penetrated that sea for a while later in that war. Until then shipping was unhindered in that location. Basing Air Forces out of Okinawa would surely have finished the job the submarines started.
It is probably better to think as those forces as a shell of their former glory. Our Shermans wiped out whatever Japanese tanks they found but had troubles with Panthers and Tigers. The Soviets steam rolled German armies armed with Panthers and Tigers. Artillery was how the Japanese fought Shermans and it was the only hope they had against the Soviet forces.
But the rapid defeat would still be a major demoralizing blow. The Japanese relied very strongly on their non-aggression pact with the Soviets. It served Stalin well too, allowing him to free up forces to save Moscow and to crush the Germans at Stalingrad. He gave them notice that the pact would no longer stand, but they hoped and planned on Russia staying out of it. So it was an even bigger blow for the Soviets to attack.
No one truly knows one thing or another was the true cause of the surrender. The Soviet attack started the day we bombed Nagasaki. Surrender happened 6 days later. But the commander disobeyed and kept fighting, surrendering a few days later. The Soviets kept advancing to occupy surrendered territory.

If we had waited, would the planned Russian attack have brought surrender? I doubt it. Those were foreign territory. No more than losing Okinawa brought surrender and that was Japanese.
Would the bomb alone have brought surrender? Oddly, the Russians moved up their attack because they feared it would, but we kept planning our two invasions.
We can what if, but we can’t separate the two. If Stalin had waited, we would know. But he wasn’t willing to gamble the expansion he planned just for the bragging rights.
Back all that up with verifiable facts. Posting opinion and no facts is a waste of time for everyone and doesn’t add anything to the “debate” and discussion.
There are many, many different opinions surrounding World War Two. Facts do not and cannot tell the whole story. Yes, the allies beat Japan. Fact. Exactly who and how is subject to debate, and ever shall be.
I’ve studied WWII quite extensively. It is very true that the average Soviet soldier, likely pressed into service at gunpoint, suffered orders of magnitude greater sufferings than a western counterpart.
And the Soviets faced far, far greater opposition in terms men and hardware. The US, relatively, had a cake-walk.
A professor expressed the opinion that the Soviets were so depleted in spring 1945 that a Soviet invasion of Japan was a long way off as a practical matter and that Japan did not consider in their surrender deliberations. I’ve not studied it on my own.
I believe lend lease was a UK thing only, but the soviets received a great deal of aid from US.
We know so little, and are convinced we know so much.
I cannot verify the following information,

In addition to the full-length clone, we also produced WIV1-CoV chimeric virus that replaced the SARS spike with the WIV1 spike within the mouse-adapted backbone (WIV1-MA15, Fig. S1B). … To confirm growth kinetics and replication, Vero cells were infected with SARS-CoV Urbani, WIV1-MA15, and WIV1-CoV.[6]

To me, the 2016 paper looks a lot like the 2015 one. Moreover, its rationale is not very clear to me: after all, WIV1/Rs3367 already shared 96% of their genome with SARS-CoV. So I am not sure why one would want to insert a spike protein from its closest relative back into SARS-CoV. Maybe just because they could. In this light, the title of the article acquires a certain duality: SARS-like WIV1-CoV poised for human emergence.
Oh, and I am not sure how in 2015 Baric was granted a patent for the creation of “chimeric coronavirus spike proteins”, given all that he and Shi Zhengli previously disclosed in their papers long before 2015.

ONLINE METHODS:
Construction of SARS-like chimeric viruses. Both wild-type and chimeric viruses were derived from either SARS-CoV Urbani or the correspond-ing mouse-adapted (SARS-CoV MA15) infectious clone (ic) as previously described27. Plasmids containing spike sequences for SHC014 were extracted by restriction digest and ligated into the E and F plasmid of the MA15 infec-tious clone. The clone was designed and purchased from Bio Basic as six contiguous cDNAs using published sequences flanked by unique class II restriction endonuclease sites (BglI). Thereafter, plasmids containing wild-type, chimeric SARS-CoV and SHC014-CoV genome fragments were ampli-fied, excised, ligated and purified. In vitro transcription reactions were then preformed to synthesize full-length genomic RNA, which was transfected into Vero E6 cells as previously described2. The medium from transfected cells was harvested and served as seed stocks for subsequent experiments. Chimeric and full-length viruses were confirmed by sequence analysis before use in these studies. Synthetic construction of chimeric mutant and full-length SHC014-CoV was approved by the University of North Carolina Institutional Biosafety Committee and the Dual Use Research of Concern committee.
