There was a vehicle crash in rural Pennsylvania last week involving a truck transporting 100 monkeys to a CDC quarantine facility. {Story Here} Three of the monkeys escaped in the crash and a search was conducted to locate them. According to the update all of the missing monkeys have now been accounted for. The three escapees were euthanized.
This little detail from the local reporting is hopefully routine:
(Pennsylvania) […] “Little monkeys, we got bears, we have coyotes, we have deer, you know all the time. A little 3-pound monkey doesn’t scare me, but why are they so concerned about it is what concerns me,” said Howie Lerch, Valley Township.
Friday night Newswatch 16 spoke with Michelle Fallon of Danville, who saw the entire accident. She jumped into action; helping both drivers and the loads they were carrying.
“I walk up back on the hill and this guy tells me, ‘Oh, he’s hauling cats. I said, ‘oh.’ So I go over to look in the crate and there’s this green cloth over it. So I peel it back, I stick my finger in there and go ‘kitty, kitty.’ It pops its head up and it’s a monkey,” Fallon said.
Fallon was contacted Saturday by the CDC and was told to monitor herself for any cold-like symptoms.
She shared the letter from the CDC with Newswatch 16; it reads in part that, “the surviving monkeys will be quarantined and will be monitored for infectious diseases for at least 31 days before their release.” (more with video)

I checked the overnight time temperature the night they got loose and it was in the range of 0 to 5 degrees. I’m surprised they survived. My guess is they had frostbite of their hands and feet, possibly theirs faces as well (nose, lips and ears.) So euthanizing them would not be unusual.
After reading experiments performed on those poor beagles, I doubt these guys would worry about frostbite or any humane treatment.

In the early 70’s I worked in research at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. We had one floor in a building with primates. I didn’t have to work with them thankfully. One day some Rhesus Monkeys arrived at the loading dock. Wooden cages with monkeys in them. They all had big knots on their heads. I asked somebody and was told in India and other countries down there, they throw nets over the trees with monkeys in them. They haul them down and whack them in the head unconscious so they can put them in the boxes. Then they are shipped right to the US. Not to worry though, PETA forced the Govt to provide them with Kong toys so they wouldn’t be so bored. I can tell you that hundreds of millions of $$ are spent on doing Nothing at NIH. They literally do NOTHING. And I’m talking about the 70’s.
I know a guy who was pretty high up at the NIH before he retired. He was in charge of some very extensive, very expensive “research” projects. When I asked him questions about his research the only thing that was very clear was that the “research” had been going on for years, and was kind of self-perpetuating. He wasn’t proving anything, and there was no end in sight. He was just spending gobs of OUR MONEY keeping these projects going. Naturally he was a Democrat, and always feared Republican administrations because he didn’t want anyone looking too closely at his work. AP reports the monkeys came in to NY Kennedy that morning. As noted, they had to be quarantined for 31 days. The truck was going to Florida, to a CDC approved quarantine site and/or a lab (the stories are muddled on this point).
Why were they not quarantined in NY? Why did they fly into NY when the ultimate destination was FL? Is it normal to drive 1,000 miles through the country with potentially diseased animals before quarantining? Although we don’t know the exact destination in FL, Montour county, PA is too far west to be along any efficient driving route from NY to anywhere in FL (even west FL), isn’t it?
This likely is some petty criminal activity, monkey smuggling or something, of no real importance. That would explain the deception about “hauling cats”. Yet the number of eyes on this story suggests someone wants it to be seen. How did they find three rouge monkeys so fast? They blended in pretty well. The crash took place after 4pm. Sunset was at 5:10. It was pretty bright in the few photos I saw.
What a super coincidence this crash was. In this era of Covid and all of the recent goings on how strange is it that this monkey incident took place. I live less than 10 miles from the crash scene. Maybe I will take a drive over there and see what the area actually looks like today. There will be residual damage in the area. I cannot figure out why the truck was off of Rt 80 unless he was getting gas. I am very familiar with that area and even the local TV reporting was very confusing. Especially with the “Kitty” woman saying everyone who saw the crash was confused, knowing that the truck (which one) was not going to make it through the light. It looked like the dump truck broadsided the monkey truck but why was the monkey truck on Rt 54? If he were going for gas, he should have turned right at the light where the accident happened. I’m wondering if the monkey truck was en route to a large medical facility in Danville, PA.

I live near where this crash happened. Where did these monkeys come from? Where were they going? There is a somewhat large medical center not to far from the crash area. They actually had a helicopter with a thermonuclear sensor looking for these monkeys!
