There was a vehicle crash in rural Pennsylvania last week involving a truck transporting 100 monkeys to a CDC quarantine facility. {Story Here} Three of the monkeys escaped in the crash and a search was conducted to locate them. According to the update all of the missing monkeys have now been accounted for. The three escapees were euthanized.
This little detail from the local reporting is hopefully routine:
(Pennsylvania) […] “Little monkeys, we got bears, we have coyotes, we have deer, you know all the time. A little 3-pound monkey doesn’t scare me, but why are they so concerned about it is what concerns me,” said Howie Lerch, Valley Township.
Friday night Newswatch 16 spoke with Michelle Fallon of Danville, who saw the entire accident. She jumped into action; helping both drivers and the loads they were carrying.
“I walk up back on the hill and this guy tells me, ‘Oh, he’s hauling cats. I said, ‘oh.’ So I go over to look in the crate and there’s this green cloth over it. So I peel it back, I stick my finger in there and go ‘kitty, kitty.’ It pops its head up and it’s a monkey,” Fallon said.
Fallon was contacted Saturday by the CDC and was told to monitor herself for any cold-like symptoms.
She shared the letter from the CDC with Newswatch 16; it reads in part that, “the surviving monkeys will be quarantined and will be monitored for infectious diseases for at least 31 days before their release.” (more with video)

My parents live near there in Homosassa, and we all visited the Silver Springs state park a couple years ago and heard this story. It’s crazy, but frankly, there’s a lot of crazy in that corner of Florida.
Homosassa Springs wildlife center also holds the oldest hippopotamus in the state, Lucifer, who was made an honorary resident so that he could live the rest of his life in the state park system.

However, in that remote island, the lack of other infectious diseases (and potentially Mauritius may have been preserved and is CCCP19 virus free itself), makes these monkeys significant to research. One needs blank slate uninfected mammals to perform some of the top level research commonly related to “phase 1” animal trials.

you see in order to perform accurate gain of function (aka, ePPP ) one must first begin with a species of mammal that is free of other diseases. otherwise, you end up potentially with recombination of other virus (in this case, the prevalent virus among this species is Herpes B..which is contagious to humans..it can leap and easily) and this can create a cascade of unintended consequences to the virus that you introduce into these primates. Herpes B is a DNA type virus.
typically, such a transmission to humans is rare, but contact with their feces, mucus and plemb or from a bite or scratch raises the risk significantly.
Now there are two theories about WHY the cdc would be cautioning people who were involved in the collection and capture of these monkeys to monitor for cold like symptoms.
In the first theory: these monkeys were no HEP B free. the symptoms initially do present similar to a cold virus.
In the second theory, these monkeys may have been modified to be hosts to some unknown pathogen, which is more likely to be a SARS derivative (given most of the current research over the last two years has been focused almost exclusively in research about ccp19 pathogen). it is very likely these monkeys were used in such research.
What would be interesting to know is what kind of containment and safety protocols were in place in the vehicle transporting these monkeys. That would give you clues about the nature of the pathogen, given the protocols during transshipment is related to risks thereof. it would be expected that if they were hosts to some respiratory disease, some manner of BLS3 plus (possible 4 level) containment and safety systems was used to properly and safely transport them. One does not casually ship research animals into public spaces without assessing the risks and building out the proper containment and security systems.
Other questions: what was the destination? Transiting from NY (port of embarkation) through Pennsylvania does not provide much clues about the final destination. Knowing the final destination would give a pretty good estimate about what type of research these monkeys served, given most of the research labs have open source about the type of work they perform..although bioweapons levels science and research and some private labs black hole their operational descriptions.
I am not being aloof here, but the reality is that there is a whole universe of research where these particular monkeys are “used”. But If I had to make a reasoned guess, they were likely monkeys used to perform “vaccine challenges” for some scientific research, that could possible involve and most likely is cccp19 related.
But then it is also possible these monkeys were engineered in the remote islands (see link above to get an understanding of the scope of operations involved) so that their tissue, disease and virus free could be used a blank slate to study the efficacy of vaccines or some other therapeutic drugs.
what stands out of course is the CDC directing individuals that they should be monitoring for sickness. So there is obvious some kind of pathogen that the CDC is aware they monkeys have. Whether that is the naturally occuring HEP B virus or some other, we don’t know.
Because the CDC is trustworthy… Or it could be another attempt to restoke fear like they did during the marketing blitz for COVID in Jan/ Feb 2020.

it fits the profile for research or post research infectious disease and has the capacity and prior history of housing monkeys (but primarily rodents, mice and rats).
I did a bit of open source, and yes, this facility does not public scientific papers. I could find no science papers or authors who published based on research located in this lab (although typically that isn’t always included in science papers, where the actual research is conducted)
but it fits….
now to be fair, there are facilities in milwauki, another in pennsyvannia further west, and of course chicago and several in minnesota to just name some prominent locations that have both infectious disease research and a minimum of bls3 and bls3 plus labs.
In terms of the reasons for going country roads…that does lead to this facility although it isn’t the most direct route. But it is the least traveled and especially in a snowy condition, its probably safe to assume that transport is directed to take least traveled roads out of precaution (less traffic and less risk of accidents)…

charles river is a primary contractor for NIH funded phase 1 animal trials. They perform many different kinds of “services” One such service is the quarantine and also euthanization of animals that have been used in various research studies.
when the message reads “released” is a nuanced (lie) narrative that really means they are being shipped to charles river (and other similar companies) that have the responsibility to kill them.
Once these animals are subject to any number of “trials”, be it vaccine challenge or gene editing, or gross breeding, or those not acceptable to standards of the drug industry, they are killed. It’s the sad and sickening reality.
