Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

Thinking of “today”, thinking of “now”:
2 Cor. 6:2 (cf. Isaiah 49:8)
“For He says: “In the acceptable time I listened to you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” Behold, now is the time of favor; behold, now is theday of salvation.
Isaiah 55:6-7
“Seek the LORD to while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the LORD, and He will have mercy on them, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.”
Hebrews 3:15a (cf. Psalms 95:7-8)
“As it has been said: “If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts…”
Revelation 22:17 (cf. Isaiah 55:1)
“The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” Let the one who hears say, “Come!” And let the one who is thirsty come, and the one who desires the water of life drink freely.”
—
Thinking of why:
Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
Romans 5:8
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
John 5:24
“Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life.”
—
Thinking of how:
Luke 18:13
“And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his chest, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’”
James 4:8a
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”
John 6:28-29
“Therefore they said to Him, “What must we do, that we may be doing the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you should believe in Him whom He has sent.””
Mark 9:24b
“‘Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.'”
Acts 16:30-31
“Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household.””
—
Micah 6:8 — “He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”
John 13:34-35 — “A new commandment I give to you, that you should love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love among one another.”
Mark 12:29-31 (cf. Deut. 6:4-5, Lev. 19:18) — “Jesus answered, “The foremost is, ‘Hear this O Israel: The Lord our God is One Lord, and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is not another commandment greater than these.”

Ours spends half the day under our tree in the Living room. She loves it. She has learned not to fool with the glittering shiny things hanging down or the packages with tempting bows and ribbons if she wants to continue enjoying her hidey hole which is nice and warm since there is a base board register there.
Who says you can’t train cats?
Laura, in/out all day, several hundred acres.
Fully trained, poops inside daily, box is 1.5 X 2.5 !

Bless-ed good morning, Frank. Interjecting here…left you a novel of an answer yesterday to a question you posed to me and GrandpaM. Bet
Found you from yesterday…and answered 😊
👍
👍
Read your question from yesterday just now. Reply will forthcoming, most likely tomorrow. I’ve been grandfathering and watching Scooby Doo movies all afternoon and checking on the OT gang just now.
Boots and Tink’ have both willfully stopped using our 2 kitty boxes, preferring to go outside (fortunately). I have no idea why they stopped since they used the exact same boxes for years.
You’re not to know, Garrison. Cats are capricious. They are their own “people”. And that’s a fact!😉
That’s funny.
My beloved and I made the final decision to adopt the fool who apparently adopted me. He won’t go away.
I’ve named him Bullhead.
He eats as much as a dog. He comes home with fresh wounds every single night. This fool follows me like a dog!
It’s official. I’m a cat owner. I actually like the fool.
Head wag. Spit. Smile.
We have one as well. Scars and all, bless him. We call him “Dad” because I’m positive he has fathered the many, MANY litters of precious kittens we’ve had to catch. It’s been a fraught and energy consuming job over the years, believe me.
But I will never see any animal go without food or shelter. The only one left out of his offspring we also feed. But unlike his wary father, Tabs (as we call him) is friendly and loves his morning brush.
We are cat people through and through as well, with hearts which, over the years, have taken many blows. Just a thing one has to be prepared to endure when stepping in to make sure these of God’s creation need help.
Good evening, Betsy,
Our 3 were born at our house. Going in and out as they please, never used a litter box, always going outside. Thanks be to God, the house is a third of a mile from the road so no problems with cats getting run over.
Just checking in tonight. After church spent the afternoon watching Scooby Doo movies with our youngest grandson.
Blessings.
Oh what a jolly way to spend the afternoon! I’ve done that with my 3 grands here years ago. They are all teens now. They used to sit on our bed, eat their lunches there and were as happy as could be. I know you treasured the time you spent. The old ones were the best because there was no worry of untoward indoctrination or inappropriate references. Those were the days (sigh).
We had a cat flap in Wales then here. But there are raccoons around and we couldn’t take the risk of an unwelcome visitor and had to seal it.
So glad to see you. Was just checking myself before ambling off. Tomorrow is another day, as Scarlett said. I’m sure ill catch you tomorrow. Sweet dreams and all blessings to you as well, GrandpaM😊
Sometimes you get the cat. Sometimes the cat gets you. 🙂
We had a saying in the UK…a cat should find you. And those are the best kind. Our farmer neighbour’s daughter showed up on our doorstep followed by two little ones, asking if they were ours. They weren’t, but as she was asking, these two moggies (as we called cats there) marched right in, pretty as you please as if they were finally home. We kept them. Just two more, but as we were in the country the number didn’t matter. They had the world to explore at their feet.
There is a delicious dish there called bubble and squeak. Potatoes and cabbage fried in a pan. Yummy! So we named them just that…Bubble and Squeak. We lost Squeak when he was hit by a speeding car down our narrow lane. My heart broke into a million pieces that day. But Bubble was with us until we had to rehome him on our move back here.
This is just one of my cat stories from Wales. I have so many more, which I’ll share… as long as Leon keeps posting his daily pictures. Thank you, Leon.
Welcome to the brotherhood of cat servants. 🙂
❤️
W_P, for me the whole chapter 11 of Hebrews helps me understand faith. Thank you again for the daily devotionals.
So glad to hear it.
Such a beautiful melody and lyrics, sung exquisitely unadorned so the song can stand on its own.
Wow! In my minds eye, I could see a mother singing her baby to sleep, with all the angels around.
It was very moving, especially since my grands birthdays are during the holiday season. I imagined our loved ones gathered with the angels singing them to sleep. My daughter will love 💕 this.
😘
Thank you for sharing that. So beautiful and full of love.
Finally got around to listening. It’s a beautiful rendition. Thanks! 🙂
Have a wonderful Sunday, Treepers. Christmas approaches and we can find joy in Our Lord’s birthday. I’ve had my share of singular Christmases. Many people find these alone times disturbing, even depressing. Because of work, relationships, time-space, or just happenstance, I’ve had my share of alone Christmases. But, you know what? In those times I’ve found that the solace of Christmas is actually magical—I’ve reached out to our Lord at Christmas time and always—always—found His Grace within easy reach. All you have to ask and he’s there . . .
My experience tells me that he’s always there waiting for us. All Our Lord wants is for us to believe. That’s all it takes.
Merry Christmas Garrison❤️
Your musical sharings have always brought something meaningful to me💕😉
And very Merry Christmas to you too. 🙂
THank you. God bless you Garrison
Back atcha’ Bananas. 🙂
All our Christmases are “alone Christmases” now. Except that they aren’t.
We joyously welcome Him whose birthday it is…and this year with more hope, increased faith, and more certainty that God must love us very much to deliver His Son into a world such as this which needs Him more than ever.
Nadolig Llawen, Garrison. You are an indispensable member of this house. May you feel His presence beside. you on Christmas Day, and every day thereafter.
PS…my Christmas greeting to you is in Welsh😉
Thank you, Betsy. “Alone” doesn’t mean you have to be sad. 🙂
No, of course not. But there is plenty of room for memories which most times come at unexpected moments. Such is life.
Amen 🙏
Thanks, GH! Music like this is so calming—reminding me of what is really important.
God Bless America,
One more . . .
I love Fernando Ortega. I think his voice is lovely and he sings with such goodness and reverence….
Thanks for these, Sarah. Have a blessed Sunday. Goodnight. 🙂
You, as well, Garrison…

Merry Christmas Casco🎄🙂
Will check that out. Thanks for the tip. And, yes indeed, these people must be mocked and ridiculed at all times!
How to post links:
Open the page you want to link to.
Put your cursor in the bar that runs along the top with the address of the link.
Using your mouse, left click. (When you do that, the address in the bar will change color showing you the computer has grabbed it.)
Keeping the cursor in the same place, right click.
A drop down menu should appear with some choice.
Select “Copy” with a left click.
(Sorry if I’m getting you dizzy with all the right and left clicking!)
Now come back to the comment box at CTH where you want to put the link. Put the cursor in the box where you want it to go, and left click “Paste”.
It should show up.
If it’s a link to YouTube you’ll only see the address for what you want to share, but once you hit “Post Comment” the entire image of the video will appear.
or
Just do what you did and tell us in your comment the name of what you’re recommending, and we can go look for it which is easy to do! Keep it simple!
[Disclaimer: I’m a technological idiot, so if my directions don’t work, Betsy gave me permission a couple of days ago to use the excuse that I’m old!)

Thank you 👸
PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow, that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, amen.
President Lincoln visits the front lines at the Battle of Fort Stevens. Fort Stevens located on the NW side of Washington DC was one of the many fortified defensive positions ringing the city that were more or less continually manned during most of the war. These positions were often manned by the sons of the wealthy and powerful there by giving them an opportunity to serve in the heavy artillery units that manned the forts which was a relatively safe position until later when they too were sent to the siege lines around Richmond and Petersburg. But there were also veterans who had seen plenty of action previously in the war and were posted to these positions to rest and rehabilitate.
Lee, getting desperate to relieve the siege on Richmond as the Union lines continued to be reinforced and extended towards the vital rail station at Petersburg, dispatched Jubal Early to take the 2nd Corp of the Army of Northern Virginia to threaten Washington. By doing so he hoped that Union units would be diverted from the Siege trenches to go north and defend their Capital so he could gain some room to maneuver and perhaps break the siege or at the very least disrupt the rail transport bringing the ever growing numbers of Union troops and the supplies to the siege lines. In the end of course, it didn’t work.
The President, wearing his trademark frock coat and top hat came to observe the action. In doing so he exposed himself to Confederate fire standing with his head well above the parapet with field glasses (binoculars) observing a Confederate skirmish line advancing on the Fort.
Legend has it that Oliver Wendal Holmes, a future Justice on the Supreme Court, then serving as a Captain in the 20th MA Volunteer Infantry regiment yelled at Lincoln “Get down you fool”. Holmes was one of those that had fought in several battles already and been wounded. Other accounts say it was an enlisted man or General Horatio Wright that admonished the president.
No matter who it was, it was a singular event for a sitting president to come to visit the troops and see for himself what was going on during a battle and to be admonished for exposing himself to enemy fire.
Cool!
I went to college in Lynchburg and fished for catfish in the tiny Appomattox River with a friend from the area.
It was only after my career launched that I was able to visit the Appomattox site where the formal surrender took place. 3 generations of my family loved it.
Lots of blood spilled, treasure lost in our civil war. Head wag.
Even with all his imperfections, I think Trump was our best president since Lincoln.
Grant’s secretary who drew up the terms of surrender at Appomattox was Col. Eli Parker, a Seneca Indian. General Lee remarked, “It’s good that a real American is here.” Parker replied “We are all Americans.”
Thank you. I’m on a constant learning curve. Nice info
My mother graduated from the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, and was actually engaged at one time to a young man who also went to university in Lynchburg! His name was Robert E Lee, known by the nickname Buzz. How coincidental, no?
Wow. Amazing.
We bought our first home in Lynchburg when I barely had hair on my chin.
It was located at 209 College Drive, across the street from Lynchburg College. My little girls romped in the open women’s soccer fields directly across the street.
Good fleeting memories.
I went to Liberty University, a newer Christian school.
Small world.
😉 as I said before it’s getting smaller by the day.
Your little girls in your memories, Frank. And they always be I bet💓.
my great great grandad was there too with the 6th Penna heavies. deaf as a post after the war.
I’m glad you know your family heritage that well.
Very cool.
Oh, Frank, don’t get me started on my boys in the Revolution and the Civil War. and yet when the boys weren’t being shot, stabbed, clubbed, etc., they had it better than their women at home.
My Grandparents had battles over the civil War as grandad was from the south and grandma the north. too many horrible stories.
one of my comments is in moderation because of one horrible story. so let us have no more fighting.
We Americans.
What an amazing beginning from the pilgrims who simply wanted to be free from oppression to where are today.
I’ll check back here tonight or tomorrow to look for your next post.
If it doesn’t make it out moderation just make it PG or G rated. Your family heritage will be a good read for us.
I’m in E Texas. You?
Remember in this small world, my last 2 children were born at Mother Francis hospital in Tyler.
not as early as the pilgrims. we were economic migrants. from Bern Switzerland came the Hildebrands, Mezzerschmidts, Studebakers early on. My Studebakers were massacred on the susquehanna . Joseph, however, was adopted by the Delaware and was an interpreter in the Revolution. Another branch began making conastoga wagons which morphed into the car.
From Wales came the Williams brothers to N. PA which was then part of connecticut. Ben was a Frontier Ranger. Scotland gave the new world preachers who are now buried in the Quantico Marine base. Jim was one of Washington’s spies. From England came the Phipps family with Wm Penn. Sam was a lapsed Quaker who fought in the line regiment 2nd Pennsylvania all through the war. Sam’s daughter is my gal and his son is my husband’s lad. Also, Jake Reiger, one of 2nd PA’s surgeons and his father-in-law William Parr who was appointed sheriff of Philadelphia by George III and made off with all the records to Lancanster when the red coats moved into Phila.
Lots of others like wife of Ben Williams came over on a boatload of English women who wanted to get married. Ben, being Welsh, didn’t think too much of and English wife but better than a Iriquois.
Lots of stories, and the old Bibles and the old deeds and wills.
We were British subjects until we became Americans from 1700 to 1788 or 1783?
Sorry your comment got held up in moderation merrie. BTW….I let out those two comments you were talking about missing 3 days ago….and wrote you a brief note.
my latest answer also went to jail.
We are on the Oregon Coast. Northwest Rain Forest and it is raining.
Hey Frank,
I am in the Hill Country. If you ever happen to make it to Fredericksburg or San Antonio, let me know.
and on my husband’s side we still have his G Grandpa Alex’s hat and rifled musket. Alex joined up as soon as it started and was in to the end. sixteen and the flag carrier was made leutenent when all officers in his unit killled (five oaks, I think) was captured Wilderness campaigne put in Bell Isle prison exchanged and finished up the war. complained of having so much metal in him he clanked.
also have surveyors desk from revolution. museum here including antique me
That was Ben with the 6th heavy art. Ben knew another of my GG Grandads, Jake, who died of gunshot wound to the neck. Jake was taken from the Spotsylvania battle field three days after being shot. He was buried from the Old Hallowell Branch 3rd Div. Gen’l Hospital into Alexandria Cemetery tomb section A #1916.
Treepers, let’s not do another civil war.
An Oldie!

WHAT TO CONCENTRATE ON
“I came not to send peace, but a sword.” Matthew x. 34
Never be sympathetic with the soul whose case makes you come to the conclusion that God is hard. God is more tender than we can conceive, and every now and again He gives us the chance of being the rugged one that He may be the tender One. If a man cannot get through to God it is because there is a secret thing he does not intend to give up – I will admit I have done wrong, but I no more intend to give up that thing than fly. It is impossible to deal sympathetically with a case like that: we have to get right deep down to the root until there is antagonism and resentment against the message. People want the blessing of God, but they will not stand the thing that goes straight to the quick.
If God has had His way with you, your message as His servant is merciless insistence on the one line, cut down to the very root, otherwise there will be no healing. Drive home the message until there is no possible refuge from its application. Begin to get at people where they are until you get them to realize what they lack, and then erect the standard of Jesus Christ for their lives – “We never can be that.” Then drive it home – “Jesus Christ says you must.” “But how can we be?” “You cannot, unless you have a new Spirit.” (Luke xi. 13.)
There must be a sense of need before your message is of any use. Thousands of people are happy without God in this world. If I was happy and moral till Jesus came, why did He come? Because that kind of happiness and peace is on a wrong level; Jesus Christ came to send a sword through every peace that is not based on a personal relationship to Himself.

Molasses, dangerous? Who would have thought.
The first, known, green economy disaster occurred in Boston over 100 years ago.
The precursor to the inefficient, bird killing, wind mills of the current day green economy was the Great Boston Molasses Flood of 1919.
Even then, ethanol was at the root of the cause of the tragedy.
Tragic mess. Sad but interesting.
New NTEB Gospel Witness Billboard Goes Up In Ocala Florida Showing Jesus ‘High And Lifted Up’ For Their Sins Ahead Of Christmas Holiday.
This latest gospel witness billboard joins the three we currently have up in Saint Augustine and St. Johns County, as well as the one in Baton Rouge. Together, these 5 billboards are reaching millions of people every month, reminding them of Jesus Christ, and directing them to the NTEB Bookstore where we can meet with them personally and talk about the things of the Lord. The Bookstore is open 6 days a week, and not only sells books, but is a gospel lighthouse where people come with Bible questions, a testimony, a praise report, or to asked to be prayed over as we do quite often. All this is possible because the NTEB global family of Bible believers support this ministry, donate to the billboard program, and donate to the free Bible and gospel tract program. Together we have great resources and strength, and it is thrilling to me to watch it all come to life.

wgn is currently airing a news special with “experts” trying to figure out who is doing all the shooting
(gangbangers), looting (gangbangers), carjackings (gangbangers), and other violent crimes (gangbangers)
in the city of chicago.
they can only identify “mental health issues” (gangbangers) as the causative agent.
there are none so blind as those who will not see….
Yeah that’s it, mental health issues. Afflicting “youths” and “teens”. Also “guns” are doing a lot of the shooting. Especially the Baldwin Self-Firing models. Solution? Divert money from law enforcement to Youth Initiatives. It worked so well in NYC
The more we snub God, the worse we become.

Goodaye OT crew,
Hope you are all good.
If anybody remembers my post about taking on big medical here’s the latest.
My Patriot insider contacted me and we have arranged a face to face meeting, she is driving 300 kilometres to meet me and asked for a three hour pow-wow, she has been researching and has plenty of documents for me to see.
Remember that this is a clandestine operation as I cannot comprise her porition, she will give me the information I need with the path to take then I will give em hell .
This is the woman of faith that you mob led me to so you all should be proud.
In four hours of typing this we will meet and I will give an update tonight.
Maybe I should ask Garrison for a little “Spy” music ! Haha !
Cheers or should I say “over and out” !
❗️👍💪❗️
What stupendous news, Mungrel!! God bless her eternally.
I’d been wondering how all of this was working out, knowing when the right time came you’d inform us. What a fine soul she is, put in your path by God h
Himself. Of this I have no doubts. None whatsoever. That she has has offered to help and has more than generously done so much bodes well for the outcome you need.
I’ll add her nameless heart to my list alongside yours. There is more than enough room there🙏😊💓 Godspeed to you both!
🙏
Prayers up for you mungrel and all you meet
Godspeed M., waiting for the rest of the story.
Cheers, mate!
If you are a late lurker on the daily thread, here’s a spot of entertainment for you
Come fly with me
The company I worked for was named “Slylark Flying Service”. Can you imagine a better name? We gave Penny a Pound air rides (scale handy). A circle of the City and the Detroit River.
We also offered a $5 introductory flying lesson.
In those days, the early 1960s, most people had NOT been up in an airplane. In contrast, today, most people HAVE been up in an airplane.
What was our Introductory Flying Lesson like?
Prospective student shows up for his / her lesson. Gets introduced to his instructor. An already ‘fearful’, never been in an airplane before, prospective pilot visibly gulps upon introduction. Lest you have forgotten, those were the days of mini skirts. Macho Male cannot show fear. (Private Joke). Lots of quiet psychology here: If you (a mere girl) can do it, I (macho male) can do it.
We used to inform folks that the MOST dangerous part of the flight was the drive to the airport.
We walk out to our airplane – do the requisite ‘preflight inspection’. Check oil (yes I did). Walk around looking for dents. Make sure the tires are inflated. Movable parts of wings (ailerons) move freely. The wing has a ‘pitot tube’ to measure airspeed – make sure no bees have nested. The wing has a ‘vent’. This is a high wing airplane – ergo – gravity flow fuel. This, of course, means we will not be flying upside down during this flight. Student makes a feeble attempt to laugh or at least smile with relief. (questions unasked – ha ha) Moving on without a pause: wing has a device you can push up on, run some gas into a tube and make sure there is no water or other contaminants in the gas.
After checking the rudder for motion and anything else the particular airplane has that needs checking, we get the student seated in the cockpit. Positioned so legs are the correct distance to reach rudders. Rudders have brakes at the top of the pedals. You can’t use the ‘wheel’ to measure distance because it controls nothing on the ground. THEN we put on the seatbelt.
On the visor over the student’s head is a checklist. We read and perform each item. Time to start the engine Student opens the side window and yells ‘clear’ Pilot joke: a nano second is the length of time between when a pilot yells ‘clear’ and his finger hits the starter button. The history of ‘yelling clear’ has been lost in time. Originally it was a question you asked a person who could see under and around the propeller. That person responded Clear
I still occasionally say ‘clear’ before starting my car.
While waiting for the next move, we work on more of the check list – checking gauges and levels and more.
Then we turn on the radio and get instructions from the control tower to taxi .
Taxi? Isn’t that a company that ferries you to the airport? No, it is the term we use to move the airplane on the surface of the airport – go from where we are parked to a waiting area at the end of the runway.
Now comes the really fun part. The hardest thing the prospective pilot has to master is taxiing. The wheel does NOTHING on the ground. You push the throttle in, the propeller moves faster and gives forward motion. You have to use the Rudder Pedals to turn. Push the right pedal to go right – you get the idea. And the Brakes are at the top of the rudder pedalss. You can also tap one brake and make the airplane turn in that direction faster. In effect, you have to learn NOT to drive a car. That may sound easy, but remember, this person has never been in an airplane before – but has spent years driving a car.
So, with luck and guidance, we get to the end of the runway we will be using for takeoff. More checklist. Now we push and pull the wheel – check elevator (horizontal tail) for full travel up and down. Turn the wheel – check full travel on the ailerons. Push rudders full left and right – does the rudder move correctly? Push in the throttle and check all guages. Then, depending on the airplane or purpose of flight, more checks.
Finally we switch radio frequencies and tell the Tower controller we are ready to go.
I always got the student to follow me thru on the controls. Hands and feet. Looking around the sky for other airplanes. Checking guages. Depending on the student, sometimes, even on that first flight, I could talk them into working the controls (not holding on while I did the work). The more they could do, the more fun they had (Hey, I can DO this).
We would head away from the airport , climb to a safe altitude, do a few turns and head back for landing. Pre Landing checklist had to be done. Clearance to land from the Tower, get the wheels safely on the ground again, and taxi back to our parking area.
The best words after a successful introductory lesson: How soon can I schedule my next flight?
Wow. Great details! I’m 62. Born in 59.
If you were training in the early 60’s were you a glass ceiling breaker?
Lets just say there were not many women flying airplanes in the early 60’s.
The man who taught me, and who ran our flying service (and school), had a great attitude re: getting everybody to fly. He was working with an ad agency – one that had employed me. They put their heads together and I benefited along with his success.
Funny story – we were ‘famous’ at our airport. More than one person working towards a license or rating – one who was flying with another school at our airport – just had to come by and see if this ‘girl’ they heard so much about, was any good.
I got more than one student that way (smile)
One of the vignettes I am planning will cover my ‘career’. By the time the flying phase of my life ended in the early 1980s there were still very few women – pilots in the FAA, pilots in the military and pilots working for the airlines.
I never thought of myself as a glass ceiling breaker. I just loved to fly, loved teaching folks to fly, and wanted as many ‘safe’ pilots sharing the skies and loving to fly with me as possible.
rah has beautifully described many of the early pilots with great stories about early aviation history. Big airplane pilots (airlines and military), test pilots, air taxi pilots, border patrol and others are the backbone. I never felt the need to compete – never wanted to fly that way. I was happy flying our small single engine airplanes doing lots of take offs and landing (ups & downs) with a little variety thrown in.
My intro was during college when I was a naval ROTC mid. In the summer we had “cruise” and between sophomore and junior years cruise including time at NAS Corpus Cristi. They brought in T-34 primary trainers from Pensacola that we got to fly in the back seat. Did some simple maneuvers like barrel roll. Final flight they took us over to Kingsville where they had TA-4J trainers for advanced jet and got a ride in the back of that (didn’t get to touch the controls though).
Now I’m a “sim” pilot which a lot of people laugh at, but I think you do get a good handle on the “knobology”. There’s folks in the hobby that take it pretty seriously, including elaborate home ‘pits.
Fun for your ROTC experience. One of my funnest ‘students’ wanted to join the marines as a pilot – but was afraid of getting airsick. So we took the Citabria and put both of them thru their paces. I never heard back but I assume he fulfilled his goals.
I assume being a ‘sim’ pilot means you fly a simulator. We used one at our school quite a bit when one came out that was for small airplanes and beginner pilots.
the rest of your terms escape me ….
That’s how I got started. But I had already gone up in an old Stinson as compensation for helping put new weather strip on the aircraft doors. The $5.00 ride and most of my lessons were in a Cessna 150. Never flew a tail dragger but flew in a few.
When you were talking about unlearning how to drive I couldn’t help but think of the old Air Coup.
Well, I’m safely parked at Newaygo, MI and ready to eat and hit the sleeper. Night All.
ha ha ha ha – I had to look up Air Coup
“In the late 1930s, the Ercoupe was designed as a stall-proof, spin-proof airplane that had no rudder pedals. An interconnection between the ailerons and limited-travel rudders made flying the Ercoupe as easy as steering a car. Prevention of stalls was accomplished by blocking elevator travel before stall angle was achieved.”
I wonder how many people it killed because of its pretense at being ‘safe’?
Hmmm – it must not have been too bad – it was bought, sold and remade until it became the Mooney. In production in 1970.
Hmm – article says that while it was promoted and well received, production ceased 7 years after production began.
quote from the article: The Rise and Fall of the Plane “Anyone Could Fly” | Travel | Smithsonian Magazine
Schuldt, who has had his pilot’s license since 1996, says the Ercoupe is relatively simple to learn. But, like pilots of yore, his enthusiasm comes with a caveat. “90 percent of the time you can teach someone how to fly this plane much more easily and simply than many other airplanes,” he says. “The only problem is that last ten percent: It’s the ten percent that will kill you.”
Without knowing any more about the plane than a few words about its design, I decided I didn’t want to be in it. The other plane I didn’t want to fly is the V tail Bonanza. It combined the elevator and rudder.
There are, however, a whole bunch of aircraft I wish I had been able to fly , or had more time flying them.
Never got near a Stinson – or a Biplane – alas.
If you check back rah, hope you have a good night’s sleep.
🎄Merry Christmas Bessie2003🎄🙂
