81-year-old Democrat Senator Patrick Leahy has been in the Senate for 47 years. He is not seeking reelection in 2022.
WASHINGTON DC – […] Leahy, 81, announced Monday that he would not run for a ninth term at the state capitol in Montpelier, the same location where he announced his first Senate run at age 33. While the veteran Democratic senator signaled earlier this year that he might seek reelection, his advanced age and a January hospitalization led to speculation that he would step down when his current term ends. Next up, Dianne Feinstein!
It’s about time the old bastard stepped down.
They are like junkies addicted to money and power.
I wonder how many billions this degenerate managed to rip off.
Can anyone say “term limits?”
Term limits is a distraction. The same money that bought this one will buy the replacement.
Senators may come and go but the money never retires.
Fun fact:
Leahy is the only Vermont Democrat ever
elected to the U.S. Senate.
Fun Fact:
Again & again!
Funner Fact: People who live in New England know VT is the east coast version of California. We do not go there-EVER!!
Re “Term limits is a distraction.”
I agree. Term limits take away the people’s Constitutional right (and power) to decide if and when an office holder should be removed from office or allowed to stay. Many of us complain about Congress improperly delegating IT’S power; but, we’re supposed to believe that if We The People do the same, there will be no bad repercussions?
Has presidential term limits really given us better presidents overall? Or has limiting a president’s time in office merely given more bad ones an opportunity to run, get elected, and continue behind the scenes where the last bad one left off?
I would go so far as to say that presidential term limits has enabled the uniparty to keep up the ruse that the two major political parties are not separate wings of the same bird of prey.
Instead of keeping a close enough eye on what a president is doing, don’t we just complacently think, “How much harm can they really do in only two terms?” Well, I think we should have learned the hard way with Clinton, Obama, and now Biden, that a president does not need more than two terms to do irreparable harm.
Indeed, we now should be realizing that the one sitting in the Oval Office is often NOT the one who is really making the decisions that are destroying America. And, I don’t think that just started with Biden. The deep state didn’t just suddenly appear out of nowhere within the last couple of decades…
Is it really any different with lessor office holders who submit to the whims of global corporations instead of representing their constituents; and, then simply go to work for them when WE fire them??
I would also surmise that when an office holder continues to get elected despite not properly representing the voters, it frequently happens not because voters are stupid or ideologically misguided; but rather, because of dirty politics and/or outright fraud. I think it’s now reasonable to believe that has been going on a lot longer than anyone may have realized until recently.
Rather than giving up more of OUR power, we need to start EXERTING more power by getting more involved in all levels of politics in order to better monitor and eliminate fraud and also by watching our representatives more closely and voting them out when they fail to do their job.
President has just become a whipping boy for congressional overspending. We tend to blame Presidents by allocating deficits to Bush, Obama and Trump administrations. It is like a slight of hand magic trick and the general public seems to fall for it.
Likewise Biden will get the blame for our porous boarder while Congress can put a stop to it with a single bill.
Re “Biden will get the blame for our porous boarder while Congress can put a stop to it with a single bill.”
Last I heard, no bill passed by Congress can become law unless and until a president signs it INTO law.
Term limits couldn’t possibly be worse for the country than what we have now.
Sorry, Billy, but it could. When you have term limits you basically hand over power to the unelected bureaucracy. Do you REALLY want to hand over more power to the Rat-infested swamp? Put in term limits and you’ll do exactly that.
Yes it could. Look at my home state of Michigan.
Even tho our legislature is majority republican (which reflects the majority of citizens being conservative) they operate no different than the Democrats. It is Rino training camp. Nothing more.
Term limits made Florida perpetually RINO. Phil Handy, !JEB!’s little Yankee friend, destroyed our Board of Regents and gave us the stupid “Eight is Enough” which transferred Legislative power from the Conservative Panhandle to the radically liberal South East coast.
We now have a ridiculously inefficient and costly university program allocation system now because every state university wants a med school and a law school–so they get their local legiscritter to budget them one. It’s a spoils system. The BOR used to look at demographic need and program integrity. Now we have bunch of sub-par programs, but the big donors are happy–their names are on the FAMU College of Law! (Yes, there is one.)
We have pushed the “normal” Florida politicians, the middle-of-the-roaders out in favor of Big Business, Big Ag, Big WOKE. I miss the old days. They may have been corrupt in many ways, but they kept it more or less in the back room and they did a lot for the PEOPLE of the STATE.
Bingo!
There are 534 more that don’t need to seek re-election.
this is the Senate, not the House
100 + 435
Seneca, our founding fathers were geniuses, but they failed on this point.
Perhaps 18th Century men could not conceive of 81 year olds still trying to hang on to power in Congress?
They had to get back to the farm or their small business. Communities were so much smaller, much easier for people to know what they were up too.
had nothing to do with age .. the base turds were not supposed to be more than seasonal parliamentarians. They were not to infest dc 24/365 ..
Just getting back and forth to Washington was a huge problem, until the coming of the railroads.
They also did not get rich, thanks to lobbyists.
Lincoln served one term as a Whig in Congress, as his civic duty.
Now we have the slander of Lincoln being called gay, because he shared a bed with other men, when beds were scarce.
Re “Perhaps 18th Century men could not conceive of 81 year olds still trying to hang on to power in Congress?”
Or… perhaps 18th century men could not conceive of the citizenry ALLOWING 81 year olds to hang on to power in Congress.
We All need to have a good hard look in the mirror to see Where the problem originates. Our Founders were in The Field of Battle over far less infringements of their Liberty. We on the other hand accommodate ourselves to the Increasing Tyranny of The Feral and other government apparatchiks.
Remember the Rolling Stone’s song from the Trump Rallies? “You don’t always get what you want, but you get what you need.” We obviously “Need” to feel the Tyranny good and hard to then Comply or Fight.
I would ask for God’s forgiveness but We just don’t deserve it.
Well, our Founding fathers set it up that State legislatures, (you know the ones that detirmined how elections would take place?) would select the Senators to represent their State.
Think about how the dynamics has changed, as a result of the 17th amendment.
Imagine a State Senate president, calling their Senator, both before and after the 17th.
Before, the Federal Senator would drop everything to take the call,…after he may not even return the call.
And, the State legislature would be more likely to respond to pressure from the people of the State.
17th was a terrible amendment, that changed the basis for how our Government worked, a move away from “Federalism” and concentrating power with the States.
Can’t blame the Founders for that.
Good point !
Yeah, the Amendment that gave Senators over to popular election has proven a mistake.
And then the 19th Amendment has proven a mistake to male chauvinists like me.
I am a democrat, but I frankly cannot defend all the madness that comes with giving women the vote.
Can democracy survive this? I have no answer..
Giving women the right to vote was not as big a mistake as ending the requirement that one must be a property owner in order to vote. Property ownership gives a person ‘skin in the game;’ regardless of the owner’s gender.
Exactly!
ProgreSSives doing away the Constitution in the early 1900’s. The 17th killed the Republic.
You’re right, as usual. Combine the 17th with the Reynolds vs Sims ruling out of the SC and the country got placed into the hands of the trashy and corrupt urban hoi polloi.
It is an addiction, even the ones that lose cannot break away, they have to find jobs in politics. It is a problem. The cycle of corruption never ends when the hands never really change.
I wish him a lonnnnnng belated retirement.
’47 years’ I was eleven when this prick began his tax payer funded senate leeching career.. All states are guilty of constantly voting these relics in..Both r and d. We had Strom Thurmond for 48 years..I stopped supporting him in the late 1980’s He was already incoherent..
We used to have an acronym we used to describe what we were thinking when a useless jerk left the ship: AMF. That’s for you, Leahy, in spades: AMF.
Vermont needs help. It is the first state in the nation to provide free condoms to all public students in grades 7-12. Most 7th graders do not need condoms. The taxpayers should be outraged at this.
Vermont was an incredibly beautiful state. We visited Bennington many times and stayed at a “camp” my wife’s family had there. The movie theater and ice cream parlor on main street along with Williams Smokehouse were frequent stops. Now the shops are boarded up and the quaint motels on Rt 7 are filled with welfare recipients all thanks to Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders! I hope that their greed was worth it?
He has a chance to go home an die. I Pray in that short time he finds JESUS.
He will burn.
Your headline should read longest selfish Senator. A public servant is a man like former OK Senator Tom Coburn. One of the few true public servants to ever serve in that office. Any man so called serving for longer is not serving anyone but themselves. They are filled to the brim with self importance and thus blind. Why do people keep doing this over and over in state after state? The politicians cannot stop themselves. The allure is too great. Without statutory term limits, it is up to the people to stop this madness but, they all seem mad themselves. How long has Bernie been in office now? You can’t cure stupid.
By February 2023 he will not be remembered even by those who voted him in, his actions will no longer be known. Except for us few very few he will virtually no longer have ever exited.
.
Psalm 37:10 explains in detail.
I doubt the family of the us intelligence source that was killed due to classified information that he leaked while in the intelligence committee will forget him. That’s why Rush called him “Leaky Leahy”.
Rumor has it that Nadler won’t seek re-election if things look bad for the Dims in 2022. Apparently, he doesn’t want to be in the minority.
I’d be fine with the idea that he might want to be more readily available to his wife who has cancer. But, no.
Sorry about his wife and I pray for her. But I have no sympathy for this piece of low grade ?. He has made a mockery of our institutions and led a full assault on a duly elected President. He should be in Gitmo for the rest of his life!
Yes, he fears having done to him what he did to others. POS
Let God issue the ultimate recall of all these power-mad Democrats (and a few RINOs to boot).
Few, Leon!? Surely you jest.
If you thought he was bad some prog freak will take his place.
Funny how that works….
I think the front runner is Vermont’s lone representative in the House. That guy is in his late 70’s, I think. How long g has he been in DC?
E.G.: Ben (from Ben and Jerry’s) or perhaps Mrs. Bernie Sanders. Either way, it’s a freak show.
Ben will eventually become the very FIRST US Senator to be caught masturbating in the Senate well
YES, it’s Vermont after all. I was told that you don’t s$#t where you live, but in New England, the people from Mass. learned to move north when their outhouses overflowed. Hence, VT, ME and NH have been infested and infected with liberals. outhouse.
“Infested” is spot on. When I was a boy in Maine, we used to look at Mass as someplace where a virulent disease had crept into the minds of the body politic, influencing them to do really stupid and destructive things like keep electing corrupt Democrats. In our ignorance, we thought that people in Maine would be smart enough to never have such a thing happen to us.
We were wrong.
Here in the lands of fruits and nuts, Jackie Speier announced her retirement from the Seat in Congress she’s held since 2008. She has held public office since 1986.
Yeah … long past her sell-by date … yet, she will be replaced by a MORE radical, crazed, white hating womyn ovvvv culllller. Wanna bet?
As glad as I am at the idea that the old guard is finally leaving — it also sorta feels like cashing out before the you know what hits the fan.
They know what is coming.
The Rats are leaving the ship. This is just the beginning and there are many more to come. It is not a good time to be a Democrat or Rino. There is nothing which will get better for them. It is all down-hill from now and MAGA is gaining steam all over the Country.
Fact is … not a single SANE person can blame Trump for the fustercluck of massive inflation and devaluation of the dollar.
Just when EVERYONE in this nation fully understands that fiscal restraint … not fiscal diarrhea… is essential … the Bydin-Heiress Admin are spending America into oblivion. Forevermore a debtor-State.
They should be hounded, forever.
DiChi, Pelosi, McConnell, the list is long of the rat bastids that need to retire. I want some age limits in place. If the rest of us are expected to retire at 65, they should too. Doddling old geezers w/handlers are very bad to be in charge of the lives of millions of people.
Life time creatures in the muck. At least Leahy doesn’t want to die in office the way Kennedy, McCain, Byrd, etc. did.
Dying in office is a noble goal. One I wholeheartedly suppport for Cheney, Murkowski, Romney, and Snow, just for starters. Help is on the way, senators. Help is on the way!
By golly. All these derelict SOBs should resign immediately. You have already enriched yourself and destroy this country. Enough already, old man.
How massive is his wealth?
Burn in hell!
Although Vermont is a beautiful state, its citizens are communists to the core. We should consider giving it to trading it to Canada.
Maybe we can sell them all of New England… or give it back to the Brits!
It’s no fun living behind enemy lines here in Vermont.
Please remember, we have a conflicted electorate here that voted overwhelmingly for a Republican governor (admittedly, RINO slime) while simultaneously voting Biden. But there are a minimum of 250K Vermonters who share your same values, and the number with strong MAGA values grows with each passing day.
This is an opportunity for MAGA to gain important momentum in Vermont. We have plenty of “truck drivers” here. Please don’t abandon us now.
Texas should send a big allotment of illegal aliens to Vermont.
Yes … and bus them into Vermont from FL.
Sorry NEKVT … but if CA can be Reconquista-ed… so too can VT. You deserve your fair share of Mexicans, Central Americans, and Haitians. After all … you are living on the Abnaki sacred lands. You whites living in VT should all be tomahawked in your sleep for all the damage you’ve done to the great turtle!
Right? Paleface – baaaaaad Mmmmkay?
Does it really matter? The CIA cabal has a row of substitute puppets like shark teeth ready to move into position. You pull one out and another pops right back in.
There’s a positive correlation between his time in office and America’s decline. I can’t wait to see the next anti-American abomination the Green Mountain State elects Senator!
FINALLY! This worthless bastard goes home. But like others of his ilk, has leveraged his position to accumulating disproportionate wealth relative to his salary. I know this sounds harsh, but retirement, like death, does not change one’s character.
Our founding fathers never envisioned professional politicians for lifetime tenures. They never mentioned re-election in the Constitution. The terms were 2 years and 6 years that’s it. No mention of being re-elected.
Considering who the people of Vermont perpetually choose, I’m not getting my hopes up that his replacement will be any better. It’ll probably be another unapologetic Socialist/Communist like the VT “junior” senator.
Heres a fantasy; imagine a “throw all the bums out” campaign that actually works; not one incumbent to Congress, is reelected.
ALL “new blood”, with no guidance by the old guard, on how its “supposed to be done”.
Hey, I can dream,…
I wonder if someone will be listing a mansion for sale in Chappaqua.
What has this waste of space accomplished, in the past almost 50 years, while being supported by taxpayers. Must be seeing the writing on the wall.
He as many others are seeing the writing on the Wall. Even some of the Libtard dumb and stupid i know are starting to have reservations about their Left-wing.
I read somewhere that the new blood that will be running in his place is only 74. Pathetic
Vermont Senator Leahy
The American people are stupid….we let them idiots in DC do this to us…we the people need to demand term limits
the republic will miss his fresh ideas and boundless spirit.
Leaky Leahy, good riddance.
Its the changing of the guard, as the old group retires, making way for the younger,…but it means NOTHING.
McConnell, Leahy, Pelosi leaving will be replaced by their groomed replacements, and it will be “same old wine, in a brand new bottle”.
That people are spending their whole adult lives, in Congress is, in and of itself, a travesty. The graft is blatant and obvious, as their wealth increases exponentially and far in excess of their salary.
And we all KNOW this, have known it for YEARS, and yet it continues…
Whats wrong with Us, that we allow this to continue?
Change for the sake of change does have its virtues.
Term limits does have its virtues.
Buy me all over again does have its arguments.
.
47 years. We so need term limits.
FPL If the geezer wasn’t on his deathbed he would stick around for another 6 years sucking off the taxpayers teat.
Vermont’s as blue as California.
Republicans should secretly run a democrat candidate in the primary that calls himself a democrat, but really isn’t (knowing only a Dem in name can win).
They can run a repub also to divert their attention.
?
Leaky Leahy is what Rush used to call him because he was one of the biggest leakers in Congress
A huge smile before bed.
A major win situation via subtle terror, something they know about.
Liz Cheney is the big prize. If she falls, the rest crumbles.
TERM LIMITS
Poopy Pat Leahy could beat Fat Ron Klain in a pushup challenge unless a bucket of fried chicken is on the line.
Then Rotund Ron would win.
As for Poopy Pat, good riddance to this subhuman Communist.
thank GOD,
Get him outta’ here. And take his coat and pension too!
Every time I see this guy or hear his name, I can hear Rush calling him “Leaky Leahy.’ High time he exits…….stage LEFT.
Good riddance! There’s many on each side that need to be gone. Grahm..schumer. .expiring, retiring.. Just LEAVE!
Ol’ Leaky is leaving?
81 years old and it is “retirement”.
Selling one’s soul is a lifetime commitment.
Good lord, no wonder he was called “leaky”
I believe the House gives themselves a raise almost every session, though not sure of Senate, we pay them, after 2 terms, a pension FOR Life. Like Sundance has mentioned, we have to get involved at our local level to start getting our government under control.
Good. No one should stay in office after 2 terms in the Senate – 12 years. I’m thankful one of my Senators finally realized that, too. Senator Richard Shelby.
How many times was he legally elected to the senate?
48 years as Senator?
Would be interesting to have someone review his wealth, family wealth and positions over these years.
A Senator and family maintaining two residences for almost 50 years should not have much wealth.
Leaky Leahey, he sees what’s coming
We just found the Democrats new presidential candidate. Leahy clearly wants to go down in history as the oldest President Elect. Hard to imagine him being any worse than Uncle Joe “Stalin” Biden
Before popping the Champaign…wait until April-May 2022 to see who is being appointed by the DNC to replace all the old democrats being retired and whom the RNC puts up as opposition.
2018 was supposed to “be the year” and we all know how that turned out.
The RNC and DNC are actively gerrymandering out of office any non-Globalist Uni-Party members as we speak.
The Younger members of the DNC RED Guard are highly indoctrinated, more malleable, dumber and far more emotional zealots for the cause. While the younger GOPe candidates know their value and how to play the game.
We need age limits if not term limits….this old drunken codger should get on with his rest state
Can someone provide a list of things that Leahy helped to destroy over the past decades. Would love to see a summary of his voting record. Did he accomplish anything positive for America?
