Comptrollers Who Push Strollers

If you want to get a big fight going in a small amount of time, just ask a few Christians what they think Paul meant when he wrote that “young women” with “husbands” and “children” should be “keepers at home” (Titus 2:4,5). But the only sure way to interpret the Bible is by comparing Scripture with Scripture (I Cor. 2:13), not by comparing opinions with opinions! With that in mind, let’s compare how the word “keeper” is used in other parts of the Bible.
For instance, you’ve probably heard Christians quote this beloved verse:
“I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness” (Psalm 84:10).
Doorkeepers in Israel’s temple had some pretty specific duties, some of which involved the finances of God’s house:
“…they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered… and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of the Lord, to repair and amend the house” (II Chronicles 34:9,10).
As you can see, the doorkeepers in God’s house were evidently involved in the finances that were used to maintain the grandest home in the world, the temple of Solomon. So to say you were a doorkeeper in those days probably didn’t sound like a job that came with a lot of responsibility. But those who knew the Word of God well knew that such was not the case.
Similarly, when a Christian woman says that she’s one of the “keepers at home” that the Bible talks about, that too sounds like a job that doesn’t come with a lot of responsibility, at least in the ears of unbelievers. But those who know the Word of God well know that that’s not the case either. For example, in many Christian homes the wife is in charge of the finances.
This is something I like to point out in the premarital counseling class that I have with couples before I officiate at their wedding. Some women are just naturally better at keeping the books! God’s Word clearly teaches that “the husband is the head of the wife” (Eph. 5:23), but a wise husband recognizes his wife’s abilities and is willing to delegate some of his authority to her.
Sure, a husband could insist, “I’m the head of the home, so it’s my job to manage our finances.” And since finances are such an extremely important aspect of the home, I can surely understand how a man might feel that way, and I have nothing but respect for his conviction.
But if that is your personal persuasion as a husband, I would invite you to consider that the finances are an extremely important aspect of businesses and corporations as well. Yet we know that business owners and CEOs alike all employ comptrollers, CPAs and others with accounting skills to keep the books. A leader who insists on personally managing every aspect of his organization is sure to affect his health adversely, and the same is true for the head of a home.
And needlessly so! God calls women who are in charge of the finances “virtuous,” saying:
“…she considereth a field, and buyeth it…” (Proverbs 31:10,16).
As you can see, the virtuous woman described in this well-known passage of Scripture had a husband who allowed her to make financial decisions that were more than just incidental. Her liberty to make such a major purchase shows that it was true that “the heart of her husband doth safely trust in her” (v. 11) in the important area of the family’s finances, as well as in other areas where she can “do him good and not evil all the days of her life” (v. 12).
The Christian home is often criticized by the world as a place where the wife and mother is little more than a dishrag and a doormat. But this is not how the Word of God describes “keepers at home!” The Christian wife and mother is an integral part of the management of the grandest home in the world in our own day: the Christian home.

Happy Cursday, Treepers. We are blessed to have wonderful dogs in oru lives. Tonight I’m thinking a bit sadly about oiur last foundling, Sweetie Pie—a border collee—who was probably our most remarkable rescue. Having lived on the streets for a bit too long, she came to us a little dirty and in need of of immediate TLC. Our street-tough kitty Tuffy, accepted her almost immediately. Since he was the Alfa male of the household, the other kitties, who weren’t really all that stand-offish, decided our new addition was OK. Soon they were all cuddle-mates on our couch. Sweetie decided that my wife would be her”work” so almost immediately wherever my wife went, Sweetie followed. RIP Darlin’ 2008.

Here’s a favorite passage from Joseph Monninger’s book, Home Waters. It’s a story of a last fishing trip with a beloved golden lab. This is a book that you will probably want to take with you when you travel. It is a timeless story. I’ve probably read it cover to cover over a dozen times and it never grows old. Home Waters is highly recommended.

Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard – It’s All Going to Pot
That brought back some memories, Feisty.
Way back in the late 70’s, I was living in the Redding California area. In those days, Merle Haggard lived in Palo Cedro, nor far from Redding. Merle frequented a local eatery in Redding called Lulu’s.
One day, by chance, friends and I were eating at Lulu’s when Merle came in. A little fuss was made by the staff (and a few patrons) as Merle slipped into his favorite booth. If it hadn’t been for the “Fuss”, I’d never have paid him much mind. He seemed no different than anyone else. Just a regular guy.
I wasn’t really into country music at that time, so one of my friends brought me up to speed. They mentioned that Merle had once lived in Bakersfield but had moved up to the Redding area; spending much of his time living out on Shasta Lake (at Haggards Silverthorne Resort) living on a big houseboat (The Troubadour) he moored there.
Not long after my “Encounter” at Lulu’s, I was scanning the “Help Wanted” section of the local paper and noticed an advert for a cooks position at Silverthorn Resort. A bit of a drive ? but … decided to make the trip based solely on my impression of Merle that day at Lulu’s.
So glad I did.
I was offered the position and gladly accepted.
The resort included a nightclub, and it was there the “Strangers” (Merle’s Band) would sometimes meet.
Folks from all around would make the drive up to Silverthorn when Merle and the band were there. I sometimes saw (never met) many of the “Stars” of Country music back then. Waylon… Willie… and others.
Their music filled the air. It was memorable, to say the least.
(they had some pretty good parties.. this I can tell you!!?)
Folks who had made the drive up to Silverthorn would stay long after the “Music” ended. Silverthorn, and the Lake Shasta area in general, is a beautiful place.

taking it all in…
was a magical experience.
Few… left before they “Had” to.

For Merle, and some others, it didn’t take long to get home after the “Sessions”. The Troubadour was moored (and other houseboats which had made their way from “Bridge Bay Resort”.. a few miles outside Redding) were anchored nearby on the lake a short walk from the Resort.
I remember “requests” would came to the kitchen from the Troubadour. (At the crack of NOON.. lol) for a “Fish sandwich and Fried Green Tomatoes”…

The HABIT of a GOOD CONSCIENCE
“A conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.” Acts xxiv. 16
God’s commands are given to the life of His Son in us, consequently to the human nature in which His Son has been formed, His commands are difficult, but immediately we obey they become divinely easy.
Conscience is that faculty in me which attaches itself to the highest that I know, and tells me what the highest I know demands that I do. It is the eye of the soul which looks out either towards God or towards what it regards as the highest, and therefore conscience records differently in different people. If I am in the habit of steadily facing myself with God, my conscience will always introduce God’s perfect law and indicate what I should do. The point is, will I obey? I have to make an effort to keep my conscience so sensitive that I walk without offence. I should be living in such perfect sympathy with God’s Son, that in every circumstance the spirit of my mind is renewed, and I “make out” at once “what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
God always educates us down to the scruple. Is my ear so keen to hear the tiniest whisper of the Spirit that I know what I should do? “Grieve not the Holy Spirit.” He does not come with a voice like thunder; His voice is so gentle that it is easy to ignore it. The one thing that keeps the conscience sensitive to Him is the continual habit of being open to God on the inside. When there is any debate, quit. “Why shouldn’t I do this?” You are on the wrong track. There is no debate possible when conscience speaks. At your peril, you allow one thing to obscure your inner communion with God. Drop it, whatever it is, and see that you keep your inner vision clear.

We Catholics call this a well formed conscience. Every person is responsible for making sure we do align ourselves with God’s will, and yes, we do that by forming and then listening to our conscience. But always, we defer not to feelings about what is right or good, but God’s own teachings.
Whether we recognize it and name it so, helping our child form their conscience is one of parenthood’s most important jobs.

I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.

Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, amen.

Something inside me (guardian angel?) whispered a word of caution (it was night as well), and so I took the turn carefully and slowed. It was clear in a moment that, though there had once been a bridge in that place, there was one no longer. Another 50 feet and I would have been dropped a fair distance into a river. Lies are dangerous, even if they are as innocent as an out-of-date GPS.

So why is Israel under attack now? CNN’s Fareed Zakaria suggested Tuesday that Palestinians have to attack Israelis “to get some kind of attention” from the Jewish state. Evil warmongers over at very fake news CNN are at it again.
The Holy Apostle James, son of Zebedee and brother of John the Theologian, was one of the Twelve. He endured martyrdom in Jerusalem in the year 45 for preaching the True Faith in Jesus Christ.

Also among the Saints who are commemorated today is Saint Ignatii or Ignatius (Brianchaninov), Bishop of the Caucasus and Stavropol. He reposed in the Lord in 1867. His many writings were and are within the living Holy Tradition of the Orthodox Church. He wrote a classic and timely book on the Jesus Prayer.

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.
Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.
