Brearley is a private all-girls school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. Tuition costs $54,000 a year and prospective families apparently have to take an “anti-racism pledge” to be considered for admission. However, one family has had enough of the indoctrination machine and penned an eloquent letter explaining their reason for removing their daughter.
April 13, 2021
Dear Fellow Brearley Parents,
Our family recently made the decision not to reenroll our daughter at Brearley for the 2021-22 school year. She has been at Brearley for seven years, beginning in kindergarten. In short, we no longer believe that Brearley’s administration and Board of Trustees have any of our children’s best interests at heart. Moreover, we no longer have confidence that our daughter will receive the quality of education necessary to further her development into a critically thinking, responsible, enlightened, and civic minded adult. I write to you, as a fellow parent, to share our reasons for leaving the Brearley community but also to urge you to act before the damage to the school, to its community, and to your own child’s education is irreparable.
It cannot be stated strongly enough that Brearley’s obsession with race must stop. It should be abundantly clear to any thinking parent that Brearley has completely lost its way. The administration and the Board of Trustees have displayed a cowardly and appalling lack of leadership by appeasing an anti-intellectual, illiberal mob, and then allowing the school to be captured by that same mob. What follows are my own personal views on Brearley’s antiracism initiatives, but these are just a handful of the criticisms that I know other parents have expressed.
I object to the view that I should be judged by the color of my skin. I cannot tolerate a school that not only judges my daughter by the color of her skin, but encourages and instructs her to prejudge others by theirs. By viewing every element of education, every aspect of history, and every facet of society through the lens of skin color and race, we are desecrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and utterly violating the movement for which such civil rights leaders believed, fought, and died.
I object to the charge of systemic racism in this country, and at our school. Systemic racism, properly understood, is segregated schools and separate lunch counters. It is the interning of Japanese and the exterminating of Jews. Systemic racism is unequivocally not a small number of isolated incidences over a period of decades. Ask any girl, of any race, if they have ever experienced insults from friends, have ever felt slighted by teachers or have ever suffered the occasional injustice from a school at which they have spent up to 13 years of their life, and you are bound to hear grievances, some petty, some not. We have not had systemic racism against Blacks in this country since the civil rights reforms of the 1960s, a period of more than 50 years. To state otherwise is a flat-out misrepresentation of our country’s history and adds no understanding to any of today’s societal issues. If anything, longstanding and widespread policies such as affirmative action, point in precisely the opposite direction.
I object to a definition of systemic racism, apparently supported by Brearley, that any educational, professional, or societal outcome where Blacks are underrepresented is prima facie evidence of the aforementioned systemic racism, or of white supremacy and oppression. Facile and unsupported beliefs such as these are the polar opposite to the intellectual and scientific truth for which Brearley claims to stand. Furthermore, I call bullshit on Brearley’s oft-stated assertion that the school welcomes and encourages the truly difficult and uncomfortable conversations regarding race and the roots of racial discrepancies.
I object to the idea that Blacks are unable to succeed in this country without aid from government or from whites. Brearley, by adopting critical race theory, is advocating the abhorrent viewpoint that Blacks should forever be regarded as helpless victims, and are incapable of success regardless of their skills, talents, or hard work. What Brearley is teaching our children is precisely the true and correct definition of racism.
I object to mandatory anti-racism training for parents, especially when presented by the rent-seeking charlatans of Pollyanna. These sessions, in both their content and delivery, are so sophomoric and simplistic, so unsophisticated and inane, that I would be embarrassed if they were taught to Brearley kindergarteners. They are an insult to parents and unbecoming of any educational institution, let alone one of Brearley’s caliber.
I object to Brearley’s vacuous, inappropriate, and fanatical use of words such as “equity,” “diversity” and “inclusiveness.” If Brearley’s administration was truly concerned about so-called “equity,” it would be discussing the cessation of admissions preferences for legacies, siblings, and those families with especially deep pockets. If the administration was genuinely serious about “diversity,” it would not insist on the indoctrination of its students, and their families, to a single mindset, most reminiscent of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Instead, the school would foster an environment of intellectual openness and freedom of thought. And if Brearley really cared about “inclusiveness,” the school would return to the concepts encapsulated in the motto “One Brearley,” instead of teaching the extraordinarily divisive idea that there are only, and always, two groups in this country: victims and oppressors.
l object to Brearley’s advocacy for groups and movements such as Black Lives Matter, a Marxist, anti family, heterophobic, anti-Asian and anti-Semitic organization that neither speaks for the majority of the Black community in this country, nor in any way, shape or form, represents their best interests.
I object to, as we have been told time and time again over the past year, that the school’s first priority is the safety of our children. For goodness sake, Brearley is a school, not a hospital! The number one priority of a school has always been, and always will be, education. Brearley’s misguided priorities exemplify both the safety culture and “cover-your-ass” culture that together have proved so toxic to our society and have so damaged the mental health and resiliency of two generations of children, and counting.
I object to the gutting of the history, civics, and classical literature curriculums. I object to the censorship of books that have been taught for generations because they contain dated language potentially offensive to the thin-skinned and hypersensitive (something that has already happened in my daughter’s 4th grade class). I object to the lowering of standards for the admission of students and for the hiring of teachers. I object to the erosion of rigor in classwork and the escalation of grade inflation. Any parent with eyes open can foresee these inevitabilities should antiracism initiatives be allowed to persist.
We have today in our country, from both political parties, and at all levels of government, the most unwise and unvirtuous leaders in our nation’s history. Schools like Brearley are supposed to be the training grounds for those leaders. Our nation will not survive a generation of leadership even more poorly educated than we have now, nor will we survive a generation of students taught to hate its own country and despise its history.
Lastly, I object, with as strong a sentiment as possible, that Brearley has begun to teach what to think, instead of how to think. I object that the school is now fostering an environment where our daughters, and our daughters’ teachers, are afraid to speak their minds in class for fear of “consequences.” I object that Brearley is trying to usurp the role of parents in teaching morality, and bullying parents to adopt that false morality at home. I object that Brearley is fostering a divisive community where families of different races, which until recently were part of the same community, are now segregated into two. These are the reasons why we can no longer send our daughter to Brearley.
Over the past several months, I have personally spoken to many Brearley parents as well as parents of children at peer institutions. It is abundantly clear that the majority of parents believe that Brearley’s antiracism policies are misguided, divisive, counterproductive and cancerous. Many believe, as I do, that these policies will ultimately destroy what was until recently, a wonderful educational institution. But as I am sure will come as no surprise to you, given the insidious cancel culture that has of late permeated our society, most parents are too fearful to speak up.
But speak up you must. There is strength in numbers and I assure you, the numbers are there. Contact the administration and the Board of Trustees and demand an end to the destructive and anti-intellectual claptrap known as antiracism. And if changes are not forthcoming then demand new leadership. For the sake of our community, our city, our country and most of all, our children, silence is no longer an option.
Respectfully,
Andrew Gutmann

I read this. Kudos for him to be finally standing up against the Woke Lefty Scum
Bari Weiss an ex lefty has now also written about this
And its n0t only this school- a Hollywood school has its parents up in arms too:
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9482317/Elite-Hollywood-school-parents-say-white-children-taught-racists.html
And this is very interesting
Bari Weiss again held meetings with parents who want to be anoymous for fear of retaliantion
First read the article then you MUST read the comments
Quite a few are sorry they didnt vote for Trump and now recognise Trump was right
The Miseducation of America’s Elites
Affluent parents, terrified of running afoul of the new orthodoxy in their children’s private schools, organize in secret.

These comments:
And the underreporting is baffling. I have asked dozens of Trump voters or Trump-considering voters why they voted (or considered voting) for him. Within the first 30 seconds of the answer is always something about how he doesn’t care about political correctness, or he speaks his mind, etc. That particular part of his appeal was hiding in plain sight.
And often that appeal was interpreted as xenophobia or racism—that his followers were racist or xenophobic. But I think many found his comments appealing less because they substantively agreed with those comments and more because he was just shattering taboos
“But I think many found his comments appealing less because they substantively agreed with those comments and more because he was just shattering taboos.”
The truth, right here.
I know a lot of Trump voters.
Many are working class, and most have social circles and work places that are far more actually diverse than those of coastal professionals. Their problem is not with diversity.
They have a problem with all the Cool Kids with Good Degrees patronizing them and telling them how to micromanage their social lives and speech.
And they have a problem with being told the sky is orange and then told they are “bigots” when they say that it is blue because that is literally what their eyes see.
I think the entire “Stop the Steal” thing was completely nuts. But when the media and professional class engages in 24/7 gaslighting – “Mostly peaceful riots,” “Girls who happen to be transgender,” “Racism is a public health issue so mass protests are fine but your mother’s funeral is not,” while telling normal people they can’t open their business to make a living, can’t speak the obvious truths in front of their eyes, can’t go to church, can’t send their kids to school, and if they dare object they are “bigots” and should be shunned from society, well, yeah, a large mass of people are going to vote for the guy that calls that out and aren’t going to trust you when you say that the election he lost was fair.
I voted for Biden, because I was very much in the Andrew Sullivan camp of “Trump is dangerous and also fans the flames of crazy wokism.”
But I am really starting to get a point myself where I wonder if I would rather live in a country run by people who believe some dumb but otherwise irrelevant to my life conspiracy nonsense than live in a country run by people who are dead f*ck*ng serious about passing a law that would make it a “Civil Right” to force my daughters’ private Catholic school to let fully intact boys into their locker room.
I hate this. I’m a mentally strong person. I’ve survived an adolescent trauma. I quit my first job in the middle of a recession because I would not promote something for my employer that I knew to be false. I spent 2009-2018 nursing my fiance-then-husband through cancer, working a full time profession and going to full time graduate school, and birthing three children. I have a child with special needs. The nun who was my advisor in college told me that “I don’t think you are afraid of anything.”
But right now I feel like I have to make a conscious effort *every day* to not feel mentally broken by the constant barrage of lies and gaslighting from our media and professional class and the stress of feeling like I have to shut up and nod along with things I know to be manipulative and false or get “cancelled”. I am so exhausted. I am incapable of this kind of mental double life. I wish I could just get in a cannon that would shoot me back to 2010 when my biggest problem was my fiance’s liver resection and metastic cancer.
I didn’t vote for Trump, but God, I understand why some people did.
It’s only getting worse from here. Trump warned you, but you know, icky texts, icky supporters.
I didn’t vote for him and being in NJ, my vote wouldn’t have mattered at the end. But, I kinda wish I had voted for him, just to spite all this.
KARMA is a beech!
For the parents here who haven’t heard of it, there is a website that tracks critical race theory in higher education….
You can look at schools by state to see which colleges/universities teach CRT.
https://criticalrace.org/
And you can research colleges by ideology.
Niche.com has rankings.
Didn’t know about this valuable tool. Thank you for posting this!
Thank you, Spoogs, I see that my alma mater is a wee bit beyond just toying with the idea.
And another one:
an organization called No Left Turn in Education
https://noleftturn.us/about-us
And this in a comment
I was reminded today that 1776 Unites (http://www.1776unites.com) offers a free curriculum (https://1776unites.com/our-work/curriculum/)
that “offers authentic, inspiring stories from American history that show what is best in our national character and what our freedom makes possible even in the most difficult
circumstances. 1776 Unites maintains a special focus on stories that celebrate black excellence, reject victimhood culture, and showcase African-Americans who have prospered by embracing America’s founding ideals.
“The first installment is designed for high school students and is available below. Lessons will be added monthly, with K-8 modules coming soon.”
I mention it, since, as we engage in the effort to push back on what we don’t want (i.e. curricula and school cultures infused with CRT, the 1619 Project, etc.), the 1776 Unites curriculum is a good example of what we do want and something we can proffer as a better answer.
https://thebestschools.org/rankings/20-best-conservative-colleges-america/
I wish we had a website that could track public, and private k – 12 schools. I am going to ask our school board directly if that is part of our curriculum at next meeting. It’s extremely hard to get a direct answer from my grand daughter on what she is being taught about this type of crap, and teachers, keep their mouths shut when I bring up the subject…?
During the entire time my daughter was in HS, she was told not to bring her textbooks home because the lesson plan’s homework would not require them. I now suspect the purpose was to hide what was being “taught.”
That was hugely helpful information, spoogels… thank you… You may have just helped my niece dodge a bullet as she has two weeks to choose a school… I am weighing in based on https://criticalrace.org/….
Welcome to the sunlight.
And this comment re transgenderism
say its better for their daughters to lose than to be “bigoted” against Trans women in sports … ”
I can feel my teeth grinding now. Goddamn it, women have spent centuries fighting not to be categorized as second-class humans behind the ones with penises. I will be damned to hell if we end up as second class WOMEN behind the ones with penises. F*ck that sh*t sideways.
I had more patience and compassion with trans stuff a few years back. The last few years have opened my eyes pretty seriously. You want to wear a dress and call yourself Jane, go ahead.
But don’t you dare pretend you speak for actual women, are “more oppressed,” or have the right to demand that a lesbian service your dick under threat of being cancelled.
And if you want to convince me you are not a man, insisting you are one because you adhere to the most backward possible porno stereotypes of womanhood is not the way to do it.
Trans women ARE NOT WOMEN. There. I said it.
reply:
Say it. Say loud.
I was an ally until two boys won all the girls track championships in Connecticut. That broke me as a girl mom. It also got me reading more into it.
Feminists have so utterly failed us.
The wheel is turning
OMG-the comments!
” it’s helpful – my children are at a school like this – my two younger children (quite adept at math) were not allowed to advance in math in order to equalize outcomes;
My middle school daughter was shown a lecture on white privilege and taken through an intersectionality exercise (rating how they are oppressors or oppressed) in their welcome back assembly, and my fifth grader has been told how indigenous people discovered anesthesia and baby bottles, African kingdoms were glorious, Christopher Columbus was ruthless and rapacious, immigration laws have been racist and discriminatory through US history, and has yet to be taught about the US constitution or George Washington is and it’s March in 5th grade which is supposed to be on US History.
Her article is very reflective of what I’ve observed at my children’s school which is implementing the same curriculum .”
Don’t forget this is also the technique used in terrorists organizations for their youth to hate from day one.
Yes, but even worse, these folks are teaching our children to hate each other, and themselves.
Actually, the wheel has turned, and it is time for them to go…….back to their birth gender. If you cannot compete there, try harder.
Feminists haven’t failed us, they have done exactly what they set out to do — destroy us and our families.
The left, it is always their goal to steal the word, twist and turn it into meaning something “nice,” then slam us over the head with it.
If feminists were truly working for females those two boys wouldn’t have been allowed to take away what rightfully belonged to “us.”
Betty Friedan was quite the communist.
I refuse to call them transwomen. Instead, I use the word crossdressers because that’s what the reality is. Trans means change and males (or female) cannot change their biological sex.
Transvestites, transsexuals.
I’m done using the word “gender”. There are only two sexes, male and female.
Exactly and we should point that out.. THE SCIENCE says there are only
two genders..arent; we suppose to follow or believe the science?
For me, it’s a case of plus ca change. On pronouns, woman, uterus, mentruation etc it’s just another case of a toxic male telling me what to do with my mouth. Any lubricious undertones totally on purpose. Back in the 70s if you refused sex to these same men (bet ya any money Brucie was one) they called you ‘frigid’ now they call you TERF.
You should have voted for Trump. By speaking your mind honestly and without filters, you sound just like him. Bravo!
Feminists have so utterly failed us.
I couldn’t agree more.
Not voting for Trump is why we are where we are and THEY did STEAL the election
Trump WON!
Obviously! Are we to believe the election is the One Truth they’ve ever told?! Please!
You now understand what it is to be a citizen, instead of a sheeple. That your freedoms were never free and that those who claimed to be on your side and care about you are nothing more than tyrants looking to enslave you. Now please make sure to share this with all you know who still might have a semblance of humility like your self and are willing to try and take back our country.
How in heaven’s name could you have voted for Biden? Did you not read here on CTH before the election? Why all of this information sharing HERE NOW? Oh good you woke up , but YOU went along with the crowd and you don’t seem to be very sorry about it either. I don’t trust you! You were sleeping when it DID count. Yes, I beg to differ, IT DID MATTER. So, it looks like you were a never Trumper and now expect to be accepted as some kind of hindsight guru. NOT BUYING IT. No upvotes for you buster.
Spoogels was relaying a comment to an article not his/her statement
Quotes or italics would have helped. I had trouble with that too.
If your not going to ‘go to the mattress’ for your kids, what will you go there for?
What in God’s Holy name is more important than your children?
Just like Paul Revere
Sounding the alarm !
And then there’s this one, also put out there by Bari Weiss. I’m so glad I’m not teaching anymore. It’s hard enough to work at a place where you are penalized for being a conservative. Imagine being a child and having to endure that. Paul Rossi is a hero for standing up for his students. https://bariweiss.substack.com/p/i-refuse-to-stand-by-while-my-students
Dalton’s top guy is also stepping down:
https://www.breitbart.com/tech/2021/04/17/head-of-nycs-elite-dalton-school-resigning-after-pushing-obsessive-social-justice-agenda/
Spoogels, thanks for posting all this.
I’m afraid the globalists and New World Order is hell bent on educating all of the elite’s children in this manner, these are our future leaders. They know the drill, and it will ensure this insanity will live on and destroy our country, obliterate our sovereignty. Very depressing.
I had read this article a couple days ago at The Federalist and also cross linked to the Daily Wire about Loudoun public schools in a very wealthy county in VA, outside of DC. The people that are for pushing this are like the Gestapo and wanting to ruin those parents who are against it.
A Loudoun Teacher Explains How Leftist Racism Is Devastating Schools
Teachers Compile List Of Parents Who Question Racial Curriculum, Plot War On Them | The Daily Wire
I have said for the past four years that if we don’t get a hold of education, all will be lost. Well, now it is here, and somehow we need to mobilize and stand up against it. This is the future of our country and as much as we see leftism has polluted every corporation, association, institution, etc., all areas of society, it will get worse with the upcoming generations indoctinrated fully from kindergarten.
Mr. Gutmann is an American hero.
His letter should be sent to EVERY school district in the United States.
Very powerful. I hope he starts a trend. It is time for liberals to reject the totalitarianism that has taken over the Democratic Party and the other institutions of the left. If rejecting communism is a partisan issue, our country is doomed.
It is not just the totalitarianism of the left, it is totalitarianism of political parties — Republican and Democrat. They are two wings on different sides of the same bird; their wings always flap at the same time, allowing them to fly.
MN GOP Jennifer Carnahan is proof positive that, 1) the Republican party is a business, 2) the GOP does not care one teeny tiny bit that “Republican virtues” (ha ha ha ar ar ar) are kept/worked for/won, 3) the GOP is slowly bloodletting the United States of America, and 4) Republicans are Democrats in sheeps clothing.
It’s true that the Republicans rejected Trump and Trumpism—1 China, 2 borders 3 ending foreign wars— and for that they deserve extinction and to be replaced by a new party. It is not true that they are communists like the current Democratic Party, nor are they anywhere near that bad.
The GOP are letting the Left get by with this while feigning opposition in order to continue their NWO agenda.
“….nor are they anywhere near that bad.” It seems you are saying there is still some virtue that exists within the GOP??? And to that I agree. Why not work to strengthen the existing good instead plunging it to irretrievable depths? I get what you are implying about the corruption of the power brokers within the party. However, I would argue that it is (still) easier to expose and thwart their agenda than it is to burn the entire apparatus of the party, and start over (Sad lesson never learned in the French Revolution IMO). People like Rand Paul, Jim Jordan, Ted Cruz and a few others are still given a nice platform to expose the socialist agenda.
If I could give this man a standing ovation from my desktop, I would be doing it right now!! He encapsulated, and then destroyed, the entire “woke” narrative in one letter and made ABUNDANTLY clear exactly who the REAL racists are in our country!!
DAMN! Serious articulation of position. I commend thee…
Mr. Gutmann reads like Thom Paine.
He does use “Black” and “white,” though.
Incredible letter. I am looking forward to the follow up telling us how the hate mob cancels Mr Gutmann and his daughter.
The mob WILL be going after Gutmann based on the nonsense response from the school.
Today, Brearley families received a letter from a Brearley parent. The letter then circulated among students, faculty, and staff at school. Many have written to say that they found the opinions expressed in the letter to be deeply offensive and harmful, and we agree. This afternoon, I and others who work closely with Upper School students met with more than one hundred of them, many of whom told us that they felt frightened and intimidated by the letter and the fact that it was sent directly to their homes. Our students noted that as this letter, which denies the presence of systemic racism, crossed their doorways, the evidence of ongoing racism – systemic and otherwise – is daily present in our headlines.
We express our unequivocal support for our Black, Asian,…(more)
https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2021/04/raceobsessed_brearley_school_claims_victimhood_when_challenged.html
Typical sheep running to support their master…
“met with more than one hundred of them, many of whom told us that they felt frightened and intimidated by the letter and the fact that it was sent directly to their homes”
Wow – apparently removing your daughter from indoctrination is “intimadtion”????
These idiots deserve each other.
Very eloquently put! We need more people like this father willing to take a stand!
Powerful. If this letter can be the rallying point for liberals, then there is hope yet.
This letter is outstanding. His daughter is truly blessed.
A liberal that can think for themselves???!!!
I think a pig just flew by my window…
Sundance,
Any chance you can reach Mr. Gutmann, alert him to the prominent placement of his letter, perhaps interview him, and invite him to inform the board of the consequences of his bravery?
This man may have created a spark that begins the wildfire of counter-cancellation and puts the last dozen years of forced racial divisiveness on the path to reversal.
It was just ten years ago – in April 2011 – a very terrible discussion in a family get together which totally shocked us (Mom and myself) and while it was happening, worried about Dad getting alarmed and punching someone out – he was in the midst of his Alzheimer’s; however, he was never violent and was really pretty sweet . . .
it was just that if he had realized how another member of the family had upset us and called us racists, totally out of the blue . . . he was a gallant, old-school guy who would defend his lady (my Mom) at the drop of a hat . . .
some gal was rude to Mom outside their little business and my Mom made quite a retort which was richly deserved by the young lady but then her father or older boyfriend/boss came storming down the sidewalk to rail against my Mom for “talking to one of my employees like that” . . .
when clearly the person failed to mention her initial comments which aroused my Mother’s ire . . .
Dad was standing behind Mom and I was standing behind Dad . . . I could see his right getting ready to make a fist as he heard this jerk speaking . . . then Mom just closed the door in his face and turned the lock.
Anyway, dear Dad would have been pretty upset to have grasped this ridiculous conversation about racism which then delved into why we did not have the proper education to enable us to even discuss politics or in particular, the current President at that time and his policies . . .
so, are we supposed to burst into tears at this insult right after the other one?
No, Mom and I laughed right out loud at the absurdity . . . you mean, like if this was the time of King George III, you’re saying we wouldn’t have any right to criticize unless we had the right sort of education?
We were really extremely tired – nearly always – back then – and seemed to find that made stupid shit that people say not really amount to a hill of beans – but you would HOPE your own family members would remember what a nice person you are.
Oh, well. So what! We don’t like to argue but we are not going to be brow-beaten.
We won that round though, keeping our composure and our logic . . .
Bravo Mr. Gutmann,
My children have heard ad nauseum, “School should help you how to think, not what to think”.
To see another parent put that in writing was awesome.
If just 30% of parents would homeschool, it would bring the indoctrination centers to their knees.
Its not rocket science.
It costs as much as you want it too.
Many communities have homeschool co-ops to teach those classes that a parent has difficulty with.
Many communities have home school groups for parents to share techniques and answer questions.
Many communities have home school groups that offer sports, and educational competitions.
“Your kid wont develop social skills” is a BIG FAT lie.
JUST DO IT!
I did it for 14 years; K-12 for both my son and daughter. I would do it again in a heartbeat, retirement be damned!
Homeschool, homeschool, homeschool. IT IS THE ONLY WAY.
🙂
The long march was their greatest triumph, while we watched helpless.
It’s long past time to purge neo-marxists from teaching from grade school to university.
…….. but that means no teachers. 🙂
Neo-Marxist has no bite and is inaccurate. Marxism is about class. Nazism is about race, and nothing else. In other words America.
$54,000 is a lot of money to spend on a child’s education per year. Extrapolate that out over 12 years and that’s a whopping $648,000 to pay for your child’s education……I applaud the family for standing up to this political “woke”nonsense…..make sure you get the biggest bang for your dollar that you can………………..find a different school, stay involved and push for the education your child is going to need.
You could get a better education today watching youtube videos.
As with anything worth fighting for, Mr Gutmann, put on paper, what countless parents have thought about, but never stated it. Hopefully, his courageous letter will be a catalyst, for others to demand that their schools get back to teaching and stop the indoctrination.
A principled man cares not how his peers judge him, for he judges himself against the gap between his ideals and his practices, not the vicissitudes of how he may appear to others.
Is there a direct link to this open letter? I would like to share it with some of my family, who, if they see “conservative treehouse,” will immediately decry it as the work of untermensch deserving nothing but contempt.
If you read the comments here:
Many are now sending their children to Catholic schools
https://bariweiss.substack.com/p/the-miseducation-of-americas-elites/comments#comment-1457642
Who knows. In some areas, that might not be much better. Jesuits can be bat shit crazy with liberalism.
I am Catholic and second your thought, both my parents were educated in Catholic schools and graduated from Marquette ,A Jesuit university, and both were liberal as hell. I also would use Notre Dame as another Jesuit university, that is no where near Catholic.
A comment again
“The only place a parent today can get their child educated In classical basics is orthodox Catholic or Jewish primary & secondary schools. Or home school. P E R I O D “
My Catholic grade school was pretty good now that I am older and looking back.
The nuns were terrifying but we did get an excellent education.
No longer, on both counts.
Another Catholic here ….. “Jesuits are nearly All Marxists” especially the present pope.
There fixed it for you.
The Jesuits bright “liberation theology” to South and Central America. The current pope is a Jesuit, iirc. Catholicism has deserted us.
Beautifully written letter Mr. Gutmann. You are dead on the money. I truly hope it’s not too late to turn this country back around. Forget 2024…if we can’t fix it soon, 2022 isn’t going matter.
YASSSSSS!!!!! Please Liberals, SPEAK UP, they’re going to destroy everything!
Black conservatives pay a huge price for speaking out, and I so admire people like Jason Whitlock who nails it in his commentary on the racism inherent in Dimocrat ideology (I refuse to call those iron fisted racists, ‘liberal’). They are racist bigots. Period.
https://notthebee.com/article/jason-whitlock-is-back-and-he-just-said-the-quiet-part-out-loud-about-white-liberals
Bravo!!!
Every parent in this country should remove their children from all schools at this time and teach them the truth at home.
The situation that Mr. Gutmann (if he is, indeed, a real person, mind you) describes, and of which most of us, here, are well aware, won’t stop until many thousands of parents stop paying tuition and pull there kids out, from nursery school, through college.
As for alumni of U.S. institutions of higher learning, now is the time to go on the offensive. If you have not stopped donating to Dear Old Alma Mater, and have not written to your college/university leaders, what are you waiting for?
Lachlan Murdochs family flew back to Australia because his kids were copping abuse in the US at their schools becuase their father runs Fox News
They all in schools in Sydney and back in their old family compound
A few weeks later and Lachlan has flown back to LA (without family) to work there and be in charge again–I think because of the Tucker Carlson fallout
These wokesters realise that of Tucker goes, Fox News is kaput
And Hollywood celebs like Borat, the Worthington brothers, and Natalie Portman have now relocated to Sydney with their kids in top private schools here.
Allegedly they they left because of Trump, but they arrived here after Biden stole the election.
They left because of the violence and general breakdown of law and order in California
https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/jeffrey-lord/2021/04/17/how-fox-stands-woke-cancel-mob-bullies-targeting-tucker
Is this the REAL reason Lachlan Murdoch left LA for Australia?
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-9432907/Is-Biden-REAL-reason-Lachlan-Murdoch-left-LA-Australia.html
Guess I really did check out. No idea what the “Tucker fallout” means. Haven’t watched since he parroted the lies about Fulton county’s suspicious”water main break” on election night.
Bravo ? ? ? so very well said and EXACTLY what all of us are thinking.
It is hard to feel sorry for the “useful idiots” who enabled all of this. I wonder how long it will be until they discover that they don’t have the vote either and the fact that a majority of them secretly feel the same way doesn’t amount to anything?
I call them SHEEPLE
They go with the WOKE crowd
They have been doing this for decades
AND YOU VOTED FOR BIDEN in your own words ! ON THE DOWN TICKET< NO DOUBT! Sheesh.
So true. Our leaders aren’t worthy to be considered our representatives and continually bring our country shame.
It should be a bumper sticker.
Nature abhors a vacuum, and the obsession with race has taken the place of religion in the lives of many secular people. Also, with people marrying later, having fewer children and having them later, and having fewer social bonds through clubs and charities, they feel the gap in their lives and hearts.
There is also a huge social and class marker, that affluent and educated whites separate themselves now from working class whites by strict adherence to codes of conduct and language. I’m afraid that one of those markers is voting Democrat.
White Democrat voters in big cities have invented a whole new class of social inferiors, the white supremacists. The executives and ad buyers for big corporations are engaged in a war with this phantom enemy.
A phantom enemy yet they will still accrue a body count.
We have today in our country, from both political parties, and at all levels of government, the most unwise and unvirtuous leaders in our nation’s history.
I concur in full.
Trump was gonna get rid of this CRT crap.
Unbelievably divisive BS.
Divisive to the degree it would atomize any non-mono-racial society.
Such is their intent.
Back in the 60’s Western LEFTISTS realized that COMMUNISM was not going to give them power they so desperately wanted so they decided to work on the CHILDREN and they infested ACADEMIA. Since then for DECADES now they have been churning out ‘Young minds full of mush thoroughly indoctrinated with SOCIALIST PROPAGANDA’ and these BRAINWASHED individuals have in their turn INFESTED everything they themselves have become part of with their LEFTISM. Which explains why we have all the problems with LEFTISM all over the Western world that we are having.
SD and the crew are on top of their game.
Got their fingers on the pulse and slinging all the good stuff.
On point!
Geesh I hope I dont get beaten up about this comment but here goes: This is fine and I hope it sparks a glimmer of awakening between people and the education of their children at EXTREMELY exclusive, expensive schools but who actually cares?
I have relatives with young (under 10) children in NYC–they have SAILED thru CV because they are very very wealthy, insulated, their pvt religious schools closed only very briefly, the kids went to Summer Camp last year and they STILL support Blasio and Cuomo.
What people feel about their children’s Ed doesnt translate always (ESP in Blue States/Cities) to their personal politics.
This is a local story that is mildly interesting but that is it.
i wont flame you.
I get where you’re coming from.
Its just that these sentiments are so well articulated and apply to a broad swath of woke institutions.
The words fire us up, and it goes beyond the complaints about an expensive private school.
This is a clarion call to counter-wokism
But I see your point
You speak an uncomfortable truth about many liberal elites. Most CTH readers understand that the truth isn’t always easy to accept.
The proof of your observations is simply found in the sheer numbers of affluent parents who have yet to become active in their local school boards and thus be able to influence curriculum decisions. Silence or passivity is the same as approval.
Usually I applaud alternatives to government run schools.
BUY, It is NYC after all. ?
‘The all-girls Brearley School on the Upper East Side, which Caroline Kennedy attended, got a $4 million contribution in 2016-17 as well as a $2.5 million donation and one for $2.1 million, according to its tax filing. Tuition at the K-12 school, which enrolls about 720 students, is $49,680.’
A Brearley spokeswoman would not reveal the donors’ identities. The school’s endowment stood at $60 million at the end of last June. Its head of school, Jane Foley Fried, pulled down $793,199 in compensation.

These type of schools are more about ‘who’ went there, ‘who’ goes there.
More about making connections, not education.
It might have a ‘anti-racist’ pledge, but being liberal it is probably more racists then others schools.
Sad but true Ibproud.
Too many of these parents never really interact with their kids who seem to be raised by nannies and hired help.
Most of these parents don’t even know who their kids teachers are or who is on the board of the expensive school their children attend.
This Dad sounds like a good one who is interested and cares what goes on in his daughters life.
He is unique and rare to the uber rich.
The letter is very good though and might just blast through the upper upper ranks of the NYC “people who think they are better than every one else” and if it does and if this fathers opinion catches on then Look Out NYC liberals.
Those are the kind of people who really think like sheep and run with the crowd.
The Critical Race Theory BS will be dead in Upper Class NYC social circles.
Fabulous, wonderful, truthful letter.
I have not read any of the comments yet, but wanted to stop and say of all the things I love in this letter, “heterophobic” may be my favorite word.
Eventually no one is woke enough:
This was perfect!! It’s truly amazing what The Twilight Zone put forth weekly for years. Thank you for posting this.
It’s a girls’ school?
Well, not for long if it’s now woke.
Excellent point. How do they square that circle?
So… where is his kid going to go now, given that de Blasio has ruinated the unique NYC specialty public schools for the very talented in maths, arts, science?
Because there were those.
On the other hand… these private schools aren’t really for the “first tier” talented or brilliant kids anyway… Most of the private school kids probably couldn’t get into those specialty schools. These private schools are about forming community and networking connex among elitists. Legacy admissions, high tuition, etc.
We need to deal with treason seriously. These Marxist indoctrinators need to be charged with treason then sent to a work camp in a penal colony. We can no longer tolerate those working feverishly to undermine our precious way of life and destroy the greatest country ever created – America ??.
I recommend turning Iwo Jima into a penal colony and shipping this pond scum there to live out the rest of their despicable lives.
Once we send a few hundred thousand, the other villains will crawl back under the rocks from which they emerged.
It is time for punitive action.
Fount…oh yes. Exactly what should be done!
I just watched an excellent WWII film called, The Shop on Main Street. I highly recommend it to all as it speaks to our times.
The sweet old Jewish lady, Mrs.Lautman, has a wonderful line that speaks to all those afraid to step forward: “ Fear allows Evil to flourish.”
Fear not, be bold!
“I object to the idea that Blacks are unable to succeed in this country without aid from government or from whites. Brearley, by adopting critical race theory, is advocating the abhorrent viewpoint that Blacks should forever be regarded as helpless victims, and are incapable of success regardless of their skills, talents, or hard work. What Brearley is teaching our children is precisely the true and correct definition of racism.”
That paragraph sums it up nicely. I’ve also heard it referred to as “The soft bigotry of low expectation.”
Hopefully other parents will follow suit. His daughter is getting a priceless education about life, and a front row seat to witness how some will use the accusation of racism as a tool for profit.
any race that can produce Ali, Sowell, MLK and Mandela don’t need a helping hand from anyone.
That turd Bill Barr was right about one thing though…if there is racism it is in the education system and poor city schools (which have been run by dem admins for generations).
That letter should be a template for all parents to send out to all schools engaging in such hideous brainwashing
Mr
Gutmann, I salute you!
Mr. Gutmann got guts. Well done sir.
I once saw a bumper sticker that read “Guns, Guts and God; But the Greatest of these is God!”
I’m here to say it’s going to take all three of these to win back our country.
This COURAGEOUS parent hit the nail on the head! For ALL of us….”SILENCE IS NOT AN OPTION”, that is IF you want to save this country from turning into a Socialist/Marxist/ Communist country.
Dad who wrote scathing letter to Brearley about race focus: ‘Someone had to’
He’s now waiting to see if the school will allow his 12-year-old daughter to finish out the year. She’s been there since kindergarten and hopes to stay until June to complete the sixth grade. Gutmann asked that the Post not identify his daughter.
“She hasn’t been brainwashed yet by the school — but she’s had me at home,” Gutmann said Saturday. “I’m not so sure that’s true of the other kids.”

Excellent post, but as a conservative with years of education in the “old school” of the 1940’s to 2000, what were all of you doing during the past years?
I first became involved at my daughter’s school with teaches, & principles when she was in 5th grade. The handwriting was on the wall.
My daughter is now 58, & I taught her to challenge & research what she was force fed, & did likewise with her daughters. They are all well-educated & una fraud to hear others’ points of view.
How could so many have remained silent & literally hand-delivered this indoctrination philosophy into the laps of Union organized faux educators?
If you want to change educational approaches, challenge them, stop funding them. Support private schools that support rationale & critical analysis. Let them flourish, or fail, based on outcome. Demand vouchers!
Kudos to him. Great letter. If every parent in that school would do the same it would send a great message. If my kids were still in school I would be homeschooling them. A school is supposed to teach Reading, writing, arithmetic, history etc. So many of the kids are now leaving schools and cannot even read and forget cursive writing.
Mr. Gutmann is my new hero!
Someone should direct Mr. Gutmann to CTH (or maybe he’s already here) because he probably would appreciate the support!
“silence is no longer an option”
action is required
