I have followed this guy since I first became acquainted with who he was during the Iowa caucus campaigning in ’87.
I happened upon C-Span coverage of the mass of Dem candidates vying for the Dem nomination in ’88.
I found the non-announcer coverage, just the camera following the candidates with mics on, to be a great window into the candidates.
Biden was loquacious, never failed to compliment and touch a citizen who was w/in arm’s distance, never failed to “flash” that crooked smile, and never failed to throw the Irish blarney at all takers. I spotted him for a phony LONG before news of his plagiarism of Neil Kinnock’s speech broke, long before he w/drew with what turned out to be a brain aneurysm.
I continued to read about the guy over the years and was just completing a long period of research I had done (not because of Biden) into what is called pseudologia fantastica (compulsive, pathological lying).
I worked with someone with the “Biden dysfunction, the Brian Williams dysfunction, etc. and after a few years of reading of Biden determined he was “afflicted” with it. My diagnosis has been confirmed over the decades. He will lie about anything on the spot. He will make up crap on the spot if it makes him look good. He will also, like all who have this, have some stories the basic narrative of which is the same over the years, but which often have new details added.
The phenomenon is fascinating. We know more about it from people who have studied addictions than from actual clinical researchers because it’s almost impossible to get a compulsive liar to attend therapy, and on the rare occasion he attends, he often will not go back.
It bears much in common with all addictions and the liar seeks greater and greater dopamine rushes with bigger and bigger lies. The bigger the lie, the more dangerous it is in the sense that the lies are easier to see through and cause social isolation. People in positions of great authority have been fired for the lies, yet the liar persists.
Anyone interested in learning about the etiology of this, the best resource right now is a British addiction specialist named Billie Caine.
