The cuts are expected to hit hardest among ESPN employees who work behind the camera. But some on-camera TV and radio talents could be impacted — particularly if their contracts are expiring this year. The network may also ask its highest-earning talent and executives to take a reduction in salary. The goal is to potentially cut tens of millions in salary, said sources.

Before all the cord cutting, ESPN accounted for a larger percentage of the monthly cable TV bill than people were aware of (about 7-8 dollars if I remember right). Rush explained it on his show a few years back. It wasn’t broken down on the bill and lots of households hardly if ever watched ESPN. I hope it gets shut down.
ESPN tried to corner the college market, and signed many long term exclusive broadcast deals. Those costs get passed on to the paying customers in the packages, so I can totally believe it.
As I understand it, if you have basic cable, no ESPN for example, you are still subsidizing ESPN.
That’s my experience, once working for a television rebroadcast subscriber (like Dish, Time Warner, etc).
We had to pay the retransmission fees for each channel, based on the total number of subscribers that would get that channel in their lineup. Whether you watch CNN or not, if you pay for television service, you pay for CNN.
ESPN, USA were expensive as I recall… so was TBS/TNT because of a basketball contract at the time. That’s another thing… many channels are owned by the same parent company and would pressure/force us to take channels we didn’t want to carry so we could get channels our customers wanted.
Those retransmission fees get increased every 1-3 years, or at least that was the case where I worked.
This is a reality check. The over valued salaries — they believe their own fake press releases — of the athletes are insane!

I did seven years ago.
I have worked for ESPN for over 20 years. They have been and will end with a reputation of arrogance.
They spent huge amounts buying conference rights. Now they have to pay because the schools figured out they can’t go without that money. Ad revenue as you realize is way down.
They for years built the franchise on the back of the employees doing events. You were a contractor, not an employee, doing dangerous work with no insurance coverage, no workmans comp. They got busted maybe then years ago and had to make us employees and then a union took over too. Rates went way up. All kinds of money was being spent on productions with not much hope ad revenue for podunk colleges would cover it.
They were the last of the sports networks to make the jump from contractor to employees. A case request by a contractor with the IRS on determination (during the obama years) made it clear that the sports networks better do this. Ask me how I know so much about it 🙂
ESPN did not. Finally after a few years someone else made the same IRS request and ESPN lost.
Huge cost increases went to them all.
A lot of people that had good lives working for them are now in bad shape. These are skilled positions at that level. Also espn in the conferences started using students (which we were asked to train) to run cameras and in the truck at very low rate. A ton of work vanished then.
Espn has been on shaky ground financially always. They have huge overhead. The union for the employees is also suing them about a Time Keeping system. That system is being pushed forward by ESPN while the case is STILL IN COURT. it is obtrusive on your privacy and travels. THe IBCW a lefty union in DC even thinks its to far.
Maybe union busting is why they are thumbing their nose at court. corporate unions I am fine with, the Corp makes a deal. Govt unions do not, they have the leverage to demand and ability to shut down services. companies can replace workers during a strike, govt cannot.

I am sorry all those people are going to lose their jobs at ESPN. But, I am very angry at the stupid players who put on those BLM t-shirts and took a knee when they have no idea what they are doing or what it stands for. They are highly over paid, over pampered, ignorant children not yet grown up. They should be the ones who are having their salaries cut to something reasonable at least.
ESPN should close. I live in Central Connecticut most of the time, they have been a very poor neighbor for over 20 years. They have never done even the very little things to help the community where they are located. They were among the first to politicize sports. They have been charged with being the most sexes and worst places to work. They were in one of the best business to be in the last 20 years or so; but the days of cable growth are in the past now. They have pushed cable outlets to have their service as a required channel in other then basic basic cable.
Glad to see this happening, feel bad for the workers, they aren’t the ones to blame, it’s the overpaid mouthpieces and athletes alienating the audience. Now I’m down to only watching TWO sports, UFC/MMA and Bowling! ESPN+ has most UFC events locked up so no other choice to view, but if the UFC leaves ESPN, I’m gone too and will never watch EVER again!
Those professional bowlers are amazing to me… every time I try to be like them, I throw a ball in someone else’s lane.
The MSM is saying layoffs are due to the virus and the virus is Trumps fault. Thats what the dumb people are forced fed to believe anyway.
Sports, while mostly representing entertainment, does play a role in the formative development of young people, so sports are important in that aspect. But once it leaves the structure of developing and shaping our young, it’s worth becomes purely entertainment
Although I’ve always been a musician, and that usually doesn’t fit in with sports, I’ve always loved football and hockey, and played both
While nothing can take the place of being onstage and playing music to appreciative fans, always being a physical guy, and being 6′ 2″, 235 lbs, checking someone into the boards or knocking someones socks off with a “Doug Plank” tackle was a close second
So yeah, I love sports, and my wife does too. It’s always been a big part of our lives as far as watching and having fun, but these weasels have ruined it, and that’s a damn shame
What they’ve done to sports should be a wake up call, because it’s exactly what they’ll do to the concept of law and order, and our once functioning and safe society
They’ll politicize it, degrade it and use it as a weapon against us and what we hold dear
Don’t forget to add Keith Olbermann to the list of ESPN layoffs. Hopefully the third time will be the charm.
Initially you caught up in your favorite team, the rivalries, razing your friends and the chance for a championship. Once you disinvolve yourself from the addictive nature you simply don’t care. I am from Wisconsin and Aaron Rogers can go fly a kite. I don’t know who is on the team and don’t care about any of them and couldn’t tell you how many games they played. What have any of them ever done that matters? I feel sorry for my friends that still think it matters. When the fan base declines to a certain point there is going to be a very rapid collapse.
Maybe ESPN could ask Black Lives Matter, Inc. for a loan.
