If you thought masks and face coverings were to protect the person wearing them you’ve been misinformed and haven’t taken the time to research the purpose and intent behind people wearing them in crowded public places.
The whole purpose of face coverings/masks is to prevent small droplets of your saliva from getting airborne and/or landing on other people and surfaces. In this capacity, they are more effective than not wearing one. The face covering doesn’t protect you, it protects other people from you.
I’m no fan of mask/face covering mandates, I think it should be up to individuals and businesses.
Having said that, I really wish folks would stop it with the “masks don’t do anything!” sky screaming. Masks and face coverings are effective at limiting transmission, this is an undeniable fact whether you want to admit it or not.

They limit the spread of droplets of saliva, most of which are spread when you are speaking or coughing/sneezing.
They don’t stop the air you exhale from wafting through the air and I’ve never stated that or heard anyone else make that assertion.
There are people on both sides of this making horribly ignorant statements like “they do nothing” and “if we all wear the mask no one will get sick”. Both of these positions are incorrect and intentionally ignorant of the truth.

When is it considered effective? When it produces an intended result (this is the definition of effective…). In this case, that result is limiting the amount of vapor particles transmitted between individuals.
Interesting that you are so scientifically advanced that you know they stop transmission even though the cloth mask makers put on the box that is not NOT EFFECTIVE at stopping the transmission of coronavirus… so again, where is the actual effectiveness? Is it based on science? If so, show me an in the wild non biased, scientifically based, confirmed via the scientific method study showing they actually work.

3) Mask manufacturers put that there because the moment they don’t and someone catches COVID after buying one of their masks, they get sued. It’s a legal liability thing and it’s smart considering the manufacturer has no way to validate whether or not someone was actually wearing the mask at the time they contracted it.
4) Comparing Sweden to the United States is hardly “scientifically based, confirmed via the scientific method”. The differences between the two nations are massive. If you want to apply the scientific method, then you have to account for all the variables between the two groups. Simply stating that Swedens death and infection rates are “almost identical” to ours and using that as the basis for your argument that masks are ineffective isn’t very scientific.

None can be proven to show they actually stop or slow transmissio . As stated by another poster above, cloth masks in medical settings are not protect other from the dr. Zachary, is the cup half full or half empty? Masks, gloves, shields, gowns, booties are all considered “Personal Protective Equipment”, PPE. One uses these items in a defensive manner when one may be in harms way. Example: operating room..these PPE are used by Doctors & Nurses in a defensive measure to protect themselves not the patient. Another example in a lead casting environment PPE is required to protect from burns and fumes.
IMO, your intended use of PPE is incorrect. When God was creating “man” he thought about a face mask but realized how could one eat and why cover up a beautiful face so he came up with the immune system. What a genius God is.

No where in your comments do you address that it is not SICK people being asked to wear the masks. It is healthy people. Healthy people will not transmit the virus, because they don’t have it. Yes, doctors in surgery in climate controlled rooms wear them. They too can experience symptoms from wearing masks. They do it to stop bacteria from droplets into open wounds, etc. If they are sick with the flu or other virus- they would NOT be at work and not be performing surgery.

Prior to this there were laws in effect in multiple jurisdictions outlawing mask usage by violent demonstrators and rioters.
Zachary I recommend the clear plastic face shields that attach at the forehead. They solve the main 3 problems – breathing, talking, and smiling. Can’t stuff ’em in a pocket but I just keep a couple in my car.

The idea that masks reduce droplets, thereby reducing spread is flawed. Studies have been done that show surgical masks may provide minimal droplet reduction, but does not prevent transmission. Masks, especially cloth masks, simply shatter heavier droplets into aerosol.
The best description of masks I’ve seen is the one that compares wearing a mask to stop a virus is like putting up a chain link fence to stop mosquitoes. Size matters. If a mosquito can go in through a chain link fence, it can go out too. Now apply that visual to droplets. Throw a full water balloon at a chain link fence. It shatters and the content flies off, and through, in all directions. Heavier droplets fall faster to the ground than the vaporized ones. Covid-19 doesn’t live longer on surfaces. Normal cleaning and precautions are all that’s required…per the CDC.
But, the mask absorbs the moisture, right? Yeah, but it doesn’t kill the trapped virus or stop it from being transferred in other ways. Plus, far more virus molecules simply fly right through the holes to hang in the air longer.
Weigh the positives and negatives.
Positives:
1) Surgical masks stop a minimal amount of droplets.
2) Makes people feel like they’re doing something.
Negatives:
1) Masks worn by the general public are ineffective in prevention of viral transmission from symptomatic carriers, whether worn by the carrier or the well person. Asymptomatic carriers have such a low viral load, they’re not shedding the virus.
2) Masks retain the moisture from the wearer’s normal breath and creates a warm moist breeding ground for pathogens the wearer normally exhales, which are then re-inhaled. These are pathogens we all have that keep our immune systems healthy. By interrupting the immune system’s ability to regulate itself, skin and lung infections can, and do, result from extended wear.
3) Masks reduce O2 intake and increases CO2 inhalation.
4) Reduced O2 increases blood pressure.
5) Reduced O2 places extra workload on the lungs and heart that can, and does, result in medical complications in people with known or unknown preexisting conditions, as well as in healthy people who are required to wear masks for extended lengths of times or during normal increases of physical activity by placing unhealthy (reduced O2) stress on the heart and lungs and by impairing the immune system.
6) Clinical settings compensate for the shortfalls of wearing masks with increased O2 through the ventilation system, positive and negative airflow, frequent changing of single-use masks, frequent breaks and specific masks designed to meet the need of health care providers when necessary. Only in specific areas are specialized masks used that are impermeable by viruses, which also includes safeguards to ensure the wearer is well oxygenated and able to expel breaths, not re-breathe them.
7) The public has no such safeguards and are inadequately trained or knowledgeable about best use practices. Masks increase the risks of self-infection.
8) Unrestricted breathing is healthy. Restricted breathing is not healthy and can produce dangerous complications, including lethal outcomes.
9) Masks create a sense of false security and create unnecessary stress in everyone, regardless of where they stand on the issue. Hostile situations arise. Fear and fear of hostility is normalized. Avoidance occurs where masks are masks required, as well as the promulgated fear of this virus results in people not getting proper health care, nutrition, education, socialization and support, lose of jobs, etc.
The benefits of not mandating masks or wearing them among the general public far outweighs the risks of wearing them.
Just do what you should do during flu season. Self-quarantine if sick. Wash your hands frequently and stay away from large crowds. This virus functions the same as all other viruses. And, it mutates. Viruses generally mutate into being less virulent, but be prepared for the coming great and fearful mutation narrative…any minute now.
