Love and Heroism……
SIBLEY, Mo. – Fire crews say an elderly man jumped from the second story of his burning home Friday morning, broke his leg, and then crawled back inside to save his wife. The fire started around 8 a.m. in Sibley, on Johnson road near the power plant.
“[Jim Hodkins] broke out the upper story window and jumped out, and broke his leg in the fall, then he crawled back into the house to get his wife out of the house,” said Ed Winfrey, who owns the home the couple rents. Winfrey said the wife, Bertha Hodkins, has Alzheimer’s Disease.
Winfrey also said that the home is a historic house built is about 1850 and survived the Civil War.
The Fort Osage fire chief says both were taken to an KU Med with smoke inhalation.
Smoke rising from the house could be seen from quite a distance away as Skytracker approached the home.
The Fort Osage Fire district said they set up a rural operation which means they relied on the help from surrounding fire districts Central Jackson County, Sni Valley and Wellington-Napoleon to bring water to the scene since there were no hydrants available.
Jim is listed in fair condition. Bertha is in critical but stable condition. (read more with video)
