The date was April 20, 1979, and Jimmy Carter was taking a few days off in Plains, Georgia.  He was fishing from a canoe in a pond, when he spotted the fateful rabbit swimming toward him.  The rabbit was hissing menacingly… its teeth flashing and nostrils flared, while all the time making straight for the president.  An ever alert White House photographer snapped a picture of the encounter for posterity.

The next day the Washington Post put the bunny story on page one complete with a cartoon takeoff of the famous “Jaws” movie poster entitled “Paws”.  However, the administration refused to release the photos.  It was later rumored someone in the Reagan White House found them and leaked them to the press.

Most political leaders wish to highlight events such as being under fire in a war zone or facing down brutal dictators.  Mr. Carter chose to tell this tale.  What does it say about a man when a rabbit that runs away from dogs still chooses to attack you….even when surrounded by secret service agents?
