In reading an article in the New York Times this morning, I stumbled across an appalling statistic. A new study to be published in The American Journal of Public Health finds that almost two million women have been raped in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. That translates to nearly one rape per minute. Read more here.
Two things in this disturbing article jump out at me. Here’s the first quote from the article:
The study’s authors believe the rape problem may be worse than their study suggests. The findings are based on survey results from females of reproductive age, but many reports and witness accounts have shown that armed men often gang-rape young girls — some even toddlers — and women in their 70s and older, in addition to a growing number of men and boys. Also, many rape victims never report being assaulted because of the shame and stigma. In Congo, countless women have been abandoned by their husbands after being raped.
Not only do you have a country where these savage rapes are happening at a rate of one per minute during the time of the study, we go on to find out that young girls, toddlers, and old women are also being victimized by these savages. What conclusion do they reach? What causes this? Yes, I know, it’s terribly obvious, but not to those who have been educated out of any semblance of intelligence, here duly reported by The New York Times.
Scientists and aid workers have struggled to pinpoint exactly why so many women are raped in Congo. Mr. Gambino says it may be related to nearly 40 years of “steady economic and political decline,” which has meant that the government’s presence has essentially disappeared from many areas of Congo.
There you have it. These men are committing one of the worst atrocities man can inflict, because they are poor men in a troubled country. I submit to you that they are savage beasts, unfit to live in any country, and should be put down without thought if caught in such acts. I further believe that such men have created and are responsible for “a country in steady economic and political decline.” A man who deserves that noble and valuable title protects those weaker than himself, treasures women, children, and the elderly. A true man would not commit such heinous acts, and most would probably die in defense of those suffering such cruelty. No study told me that. It was my moral compass. Any jackass who comes to such a conclusion as this one needs to do whatever it takes to escape academia’s narrow confines, and find their true north again.
