The search dogs at Ground Zero stopped eating.
More than 300 of them worked that pile.
They are trained on one thing: the scent of a living human being.
When they find it, everybody celebrates and the dog understands what it is for.
The last person pulled out alive was found 27 hours in. After that, day after day, twelve-hour shifts across sixteen acres of burning steel, the dogs found nobody.
Their tails went down. They stopped eating. A vet who was there said the dogs had been sent to find life and were finding the opposite every single day.
So the police cleared the rubble and asked for volunteers.
Officers climbed into the wreckage and lay down and pretended to be hurt, so the dogs could find somebody alive.
Nobody could save the dead. So they saved each other.

Islamic Jihad, the terror group that partnered with Abdel-Rahman’s gang to kill Sadat. Abdel-Rahman was acquitted by Egyptian courts twice, but the State Department still put him on the terror watch list. Nonetheless, he was granted a visa in 1990 by consular officials at the U.S. embassy in Khartoum. “They didn’t follow the procedures,” said a State Department spokesperson at the time, who called it a “mistake.”
Wrong, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said back then: “The visa he got was not issued by mistake. It is because of the services he did.” According to Sadat’s successor, “The sheik has been a CIA agent since his days in Afghanistan.” There’s circumstantial evidence to support Mubarak’s claim.
In the mid-1980s, Abdel-Rahman traveled frequently to Afghanistan, where he became friendly with bin Laden. The Egyptian helped recruit Arab fighters to join the CIA-backed mujahideen, and maybe it was in recognition of his contributions to the anti-Soviet jihad that the CIA arranged for Abdel-Rahman’s 1990 visa—as well as two previous visas, in 1986 and 1987, both at the U.S. embassy in Cairo.
America’s post-9/11 mission was the war to restore ‘moderate Islam’—something that had never existed in the first place.
U.S. officials scrambled to cover up once news of Abdel-Rahman’s visa went public. “Just because you work for the agency,” said one official, “I don’t know that you should know every bad guy in Egypt who walks through the door.” But that’s nonsense. No U.S. official stationed in Egypt or neighboring Sudan at the time could fail to recognize a notorious terror preacher twice tried for the assassination of a historic U.S. ally.
