GLORY BE TO GOD ON HIGH

The Gloria in Excelsis begins with the greeting the angels sang to the shepherds at Christ’s birth. It is one of the principal parts of the communion liturgy of much of Christendom, going back more than 1600 years. It has been given musical settings by the greatest composers of every period. Although these works are musically stellar, they are typically too lengthy, repetitive, and difficult for congregations to sing.

The musical backdrop in this recording was written in the late nineteenth century. Sturdy, simple, and reverent, it has been part of the “Common Service” of Lutheran churches since then.
