I dashed to Lowe’s early one weekday morning to get a hammer my boss needed (for survey stakes) – this was in 2008 – saw an employee walking along and asked him where the hammers were – he did not understand! He spoke Spanish but he did not speak English sufficiently to know the word in English for a hardware item. I made the motion of using a hammer to hit something and then he pointed me in the right direction – I mean, really!
A hammer is pretty straight forward.

In Australia I went to Bunnings our local hardware store and asked one of the aisle employees for a shifting spanner, a long nose pliers and a pliers with wire cutters he did not know what any of those items were. I had to explain it to him. The reason I knew was that I helped my dad in his workshop as a kid and knew all of those tools as well as others
