Both of those are easy. By not demanding elections, and withholding aid until they happen, Trump is propping up that crook Zekensky.
And the NATO thing is quite simple. The United States statutorily reduces its NATO funding any time somebody from Europe or Congress talks about making Ukraine a NATO member.

So, why work (think) hard? Of course this predictably has resulted in the loss of US technical and scientific leadeship since the 1980’s. Loss of Yankee ingenuity. Loss of social and financial mobility based on meritt and contribution. But the big companies are protected from competition (eg IBM, GE, SEARS etc which as bureaucracies could not control integrated circuit companies, Amazon. EBAY, etc.).
This is an example of the creeping “top down” control, monopolization and financialization which is wrecking the country contrary to the “bottom up” philosophy of the Constitution.

ALL employers do the very same thing … however, the minor detail you neglected to include is that ALL employers also allow the “author” to be named as the originator of the work and have their name affixed to the patent as such …thus benefiting the employee’s CV either when seeking a new employee or when evaluated by the current employer.. The employers REWARD the work with compensation.

This has always been the case … for employees using the resources of their employers to create.
For employers, the stipulation is anything “in the line of employment.” The employee can carve out inventions or proprietary work.

And employers frown on time spent on personal businesses. Company employment has a different set of fiduciary duties, compared to university teaching by professors and tuition-paying students there to learn.
Doc, you are mistaken. University ‘Peonage” of professors and grad students is substantially universal. State Ubiversities are not private corporations and should not intellectually enslave thei professors and gradstudents. Public universities, especially, should not frustrate the Constitutional charge to grant to inventors and authors the owheship of their inventions and writings. Universities are tax-exempt institutions which are to openly teach, and should not and do not have “technology trade secrets:” communicated in confidence to employes to compete in the marketplace. Universities should compete by virtue of their excellence in teacing, not in enslaving the minds of their teaching and learning staff/students. Professors need to publish or perish, and need to get their own funding for research.
Universities should not be in the business of selection and licensing of ‘stolen’ inventions and software. As a practical policy issue, economists are baffled about why we lost tech leadership staarting in the 1980’s. Universitiy bureaucracies are not good stewards of inventions and software. From the beginning of the US until the the current university peonage, the US continuously elevated its technical capability, to become pre-eminent. Industry cooperated with universities, sponsored research, and employed graduates. Now, Industry generally needs to avoid university entanglement. Universities decided that government funding, which greatly increased through the 1960’s-1970’s, and making Industry prey, was preferable to collaboration with industry.
Universities tend to only support medical inventions which are easily licenseable and don’t take much development hard work and devotion which previously would be provided by the authors and inventors.
Don’t you think any royalties from inventions and software ‘stolen’ from by State University students and professors should go back to the State government treasury? The State funds, controlls and effectively owns the university more than the university owns the tuition paying students and the professors who fund their own research by grants they get themselves.
The bottom line is that peonage of professors and tuition-paying student minds is morally and Constitutionally wrong, suffocates incentive and inventive work, and has the bad result of the US losing its historical edge.

My son has a college degree joined the Navy, but when he came out had an opportunity to train as an industrial HVAC technician. He was hired by a small company while he completed his training at night. He was poached by a well known national concern with exceptional wages and benefits and has moved up the ladder. He never had any exposure to now defunct high school shop classes, and so his aptitude for what he does never had a chance to show itself.
He is debt free, has a gorgeous family, owns a wonderful house, is more than appreciated by his employers in Texas, and is content (“happy” being a term which I eschew).

Fortunately, my high school had these things called “shop classes”.
We had wood shop, metal shop, auto shop, drafting etc.
Shop was an effective way for me to comprehend applied math, mech science,

These skills have served someone like me much better than collage could have.

My British husband had them post WII, plus a father who taught him everything he knew, which was quite a lot. Electrics, mechanics, woodwork, plumbing, and the rest…you name it. And as you so accurately pointed out, applied sciences like physics and mathematics. What he has saved us over the 37 years we’ve been married is in the tens of thousands of dollars. As well as providing a very good living besides.
Why they stopped remains a mystery all right. But that they did probably deprived thousands of tudents the opportunity to discover a passion for working with their hands and the joy of accomplishment. Shameful really…
The end of shop classes deprived many the self satisfaction that comes from learning the dignity of work.

Jan, in the McGonigal indictment, there wasn’t any mention of the allegations made here by Mills – that McGonigal was paid off by Russians while still at FBI. The indictment talked of payoffs while at FBI by Albanians and post-FBI work as consultant to a sanctioned Russia – Deripaska. If he got payoffs from Russia while at FBI, one would think that would have been charged. And as shady as McGonigal undoubtedly was, is Mills being opportunistic here?

Sundance posted Tucker’s interview with him a few days ago – and yes that interview is a must watch – but I don’t recall a mention of this documentary. I found it while searching for the book on Audible / Kindle / Amazon / Abebooks – nothing available. Richard should do another printing of a super special leather hard-bound edition. According to the now declassified September 2020 majority staff report of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Putin’s principal goal was to undermine faith in the U.S. democratic process, not help any particular candidate. Thus, he chose not to leak the most compromising allegations about Clinton, presumably so that he could later use them to weaken her expected presidency. If Russia really wanted to help Trump, the purported information – whether true or not – would have been released during the campaign.
The intelligence community and media, which did have a clear favorite in 2016, carefully hid the compromising accusations, including secret meetings in which State Department representatives are alleged to have unlawfully offered assistance to religious groups in exchange for their support in the 2016 election, along with emails from Democratic National Committee officials describing Clinton’s “psycho-emotional problems,” including “uncontrolled fits of anger, aggression, and cheerfulness.” Clinton was said by these sources to be on a daily regimen of “heavy tranquilizers.”
