I just returned from a visit to western North Carolina, Asheville, Swannanoa, Black Mountain area. Not one person we met and spoke with had a good thing to say about FEMA. Even the state emergency services efforts seem to have been sub-par, though not as thoroughly useless as FEMA. Wait staff, drivers, store clerks, hotel staff, nobody has a good thing to say about the official response. Mentioning FEMA got eyes filled with anger and jaws clenched – actual obstacles to recovery, arrogant and contemptuous federal personnel. Mentioning state emergency services got eye rolls, but without the same hatred, more like incompetence – the let down, balls dropped.
They raved about the efforts of the Amish, feel tremendous gratitude for neighbors, volunteers from around their state and other states who got things done, are getting things done. So much more to do. So much they never can get back. So many lives still unaccounted for. Good people, individual efforts, churches, old-fashioned charitable acts of service is what makes the biggest difference, not massive “we’re from the government, we’re here to help” offers.
PSA: They can really use the tourism. The city of Asheville is fine, lots of aid money was spread across the town to businesses and those who had losses. The D governor made sure the D city of Asheville got more than its fair share. It’s the outlying smaller communities that need economic activity to survive. Most are fine, ready, willing and able to share their hospitality and provide visitors with the experiences that are found in the beautiful Smoky Mountains. But images and memories of the disaster that was Helene are keeping visitors away. The damage is real, large areas. But not so widespread that tourists have reason to stay away. Just don’t try to be a disaster tourist and go to places like Chimney Rock or Lake Lure. Only residents are allowed in, the recovery efforts don’t need disaster tourists getting in the way. But help spread the word to anyone who is thinking about where to go for the summer. The cool mountains of North Carolina, waterfall country and the small communities in it need tourism dollars. There were folks from Shorewood Bible Church in Chicago IL that have had a small relief operation going.
A truck driver filled up his rig with donated goods and made at least two deliveries there that I know of.

Thus far as you have said, it has mostly been thru local organizations, the Amish and volunteers. Almost 9 months in and a lot have forgotten them. I live in Western NC just north of Asheville. Asheville sucks up all the aid to Buncombe County and they sit around and complain because, actually, tourism is really down. I would think they would be happy as the residents hate tourists even though that’s how they make a living and they have “we hate Trump” protests every weekend. Would you go on a vacation where senior citizens spend Saturday laying in the middle of the road blocking access to businesses who are afraid to alienate the locals? No one in the rest of the area goes into Asheville except for the mall and grocery stores…
For the first week after the hurricane, NO ONE came to help us and that means local, state, or Federal. The stupid governor didn’t call in the National Guard until Gov DeSantis in Florida said he was sending his guard in. So, because we were on our own, the locals sprung into action..at least the ones who were alive. All kinds of food and supply locations were organized…everyone did what they could…forget the county helping out…out to lunch I guess.
Then what happened is that, after the locals cleared land, opened roads, chain sawed their driveways, got their helicopters up and flying and saved many lives, FEMA showed up…”We are the government and we will run things.”
They banned the helicopters..I mean they saved so many lives, they told people they could not fix their bridges and repair their roads, they could not go get food without an ID (I mean they lost their houses and that included their ID). Also, and they do hire locally, but they had DEI, and probably 90% if who they hired were black and WNC is probably 90% white…so when the FEMA strode into an isolated community of locals people were scared…these are people who are free independent citizens and btw Trump supporters. FEMA was a disaster. Talk about a clash of cultures…
However, since Trump came here things are really getting better. The Army Corp of Engineers is going to be here for two years dredging streams, hauling debris, repairing infrastructure…you would not believe the debris! We are talking the Appalachian Mountains…I am saying lots of woods…lots of creeks..I have seen whole mountain sides with every tree on the ground but more than that..if anyone ever drops a match it will be an inferno…right now still to green and no one can get there…this is a remote mountain area..no roads, not trails..
FEMA has improved..thank you President Trump.. they are providing the funding for the repair and rebuilding of bridges on private roads. I have a friend on a private road with 13 houses. There is a bridge over a creek and it collapsed so in order to get to their homes they went out, I mean the locals on that road, and propped the bridge up enough so they could get in and out. They had no electricity thus no water (on wells with pumps) and they had to keep propping it up but Duke Energy would not risk taking their trucks across but after more work, by the locals, one truck just did it (some say it was a truck from Ontario) and electricity and thus water was available. But now, money that came from FEMA built them a new bridge. Everyone on the street had to agree, (13 households) and they did and she now had a new, really well built bridge. Fema just provided the money, private contractors built the bridge…so FEMA is doing better, Army Corp of Engneers doing a good job…long slow haul.
President Trump and our Congressman (who is a RINO) did a terrific job. Many of us have PTSD…very traumatic experience.
But I do not think funneling this money through the state is not a good idea. There was a hurricane on the coast of NC maybe 10 years ago billions of dollars just disappeared. I mean there are still people in hotel rooms…no one knows where it went…totally corrupt government here..and incompetent…only one Republican Governor since the Civil War..lots of fraud and we need ICE here because the state on NC is loaded up with illegals.

I remember in Colorado when the beetle kills destroyed huge forests (probably still do) and all that kindling was on the the ground (much still is) they began a process to allow harvesting of the treefall with low-impact temporary inroads being built. They eased off of some of the environmental concerns without removing all of them. If it’s made economically viable for the lumber industry they’ll clear a lot of the fire risk away.
They did allow some roads for awhile but eventually the Government via the EPA made harvesters use helicopters which made harvesting too expensive. In addition after beetle kill has been on the ground for more than a year IIRC it cannot be used structurally. It becomes usefull for furniture. I have seen it used for stair treads inside homes and it is attractive.

In two weeks my husband and I will be “a vacation” for 3 of our nephews 10 children. My nephew and his wife are getting divorced, and all of the kids will be farmed out to different close family members to hopefully give them a fun time away from stress they should not have to deal with.
That said, we’ve been trying to think of a wonderful, yet meaningful, way to spend 2 weeks with an 8, 10 and 11 year old. They’re old enough to work, and young enough to still be molded by the world they experience.
Reading your post, Littleflower, made me think that maybe the best vacation for them and us would be to find a good place to volunteer and work in North Carolina. 6 little hands and 4 big hands should be able to help someone out.
Do you know of an organization we could contact and possibly work with? We volunteered with Hands-On during Hurricane Katrina, but I haven’t seen them mentioned in NC.

Black Mountain Children’s Home sounds like a good fit for you and the kids. During the aftermath of the hurricane I saw a mention of them and I made some donations. I’m still donating and they send me updates on their rebuilding. It’s in North Carolina and can be easily found by Google.
This is Samaritan’s purse but I think the kids are a bit young..Yancy County really needs help…this is a mostly rural county whose residents are fiercely independent but really need help…Samaritans Purse may be able to direct you to other volunteer activities.

We plan to drive from Laurel Springs to West Jefferson…One of our all-time FAVORITE TOWNS in Western NC. Plus, we would like to do a trip into Boone as well. We make a point of finding out from the local folks how things are going.

I do know that the Blue Ridge Parkway has agreed to open the Parkway in the Boone area to allow more tourism. Apparently the damage has been repaired there.
Where I live the Parkway is still closed. There are 3 major landslides between my access to the Parkway and the access to Asheville. As it is now, in order to get anywhere east of Asheville and to the mall we have to go into Asheville, get on highway, make big U-turn. The Parkway is used as a road around there to get places more directly. They do have the money, thank you President Trump, and work is being done but it is unreal..I mean whole sections of the roadway gone with huge landslides above and below. Supposedly, that section will be open in September…

FEMA was originally intended to be back-up to state and local governments. The locals knew their states and their topographies, and could best plan for disasters. Over the years, FEMA’s mission creep moved it to the lead position, with which the local politicians were happy for it to assume.
Hurricane Katrina showed how little state and local governments had done as far as disaster preparedness. I recall seeing a new conference in which the governor of Louisiana was caught on mike pleading with her staff, “What do I do?”
Trump is moving FEMA back to its statutory mandate. With hurricane season starting, he’s making it clear that local and state politicians should be ready.
FEMA actively blocks aid coming into afflicted areas unless it is from “government approved vendors”.
This has been going on since at least Katrina.

But the Constitution does also (Article 4, Section 4) guarantees to every State that the Federal Government shall “protect each of them against Invasion.”
And the Congress, not the several States, must obey the Article 1 provision: “To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions.” In saying this, the Constitution describes precise duties that “the Militia” are to perform. As in this exact case.
What we are dealing with here right now is “insurrection.”

Notice how “Article 1, Section 8” placed it in Congress’s hands to set the basic Federal laws under which the militias may be Federally “called.” And the Congress has dutifully done so, several times.
