In the larger background of geopolitical conflict, the eyes of the world are concerned about increased military conflict within Ukraine. Most reasonable people in the ‘west’ are concerned about the potential for escalation, as NATO and the Biden administration push more weapons into Ukraine in advance of their exit from the White House.
The larger group of ordinary observers are hopeful that President Trump can bring the war in Ukraine to a negotiated conclusion.
Yesterday, President Trump used his Truth Social account to share a story about Russian President Vladimir Putin being open and ready for talks with the new administration. Here is the article from December 19th that President Trump posted:

And he nodded to the sea change expected in Washington, saying he had not spoken to US President-elect Donald Trump in over four years, but was “ready” for potential talks with him, amid expectation that the new administration in Washington will push for a negotiated end to the war in Ukraine.
Thursday’s event – an annual display of Putin’s mastery of the minutiae of domestic policy as well as of geopolitics – consists of a public Q&A session combined with a public phone-in.
Russia’s war on Ukraine was a major topic, with Putin keen to emphasize Russia’s recent gains in grinding war of attrition.
“You asked what we can offer, or what I can offer to the newly elected President Trump when we meet,” Putin said in response to a question from NBC’s Keir Simmons. “First of all, I don’t know when we will meet. Because he hasn’t said anything about it. I haven’t spoken to him at all in over four years. Of course, I am ready for this at any time, and I will be ready for a meeting if he wants it.”
Asked whether Russia would be in a weaker negotiating position because of recent setbacks in the Middle East and on the battlefield in Ukraine, Putin replied, “You said that this conversation will take place in a situation when I am in some weakened state… And you, and those people who pay your salaries in the US, would very much like Russia to be in a weakened position. The bottom-line indication from President Putin is that he welcomes the change in geopolitical dynamic that a pragmatic, honest and strong man brings to the table. Putin respects Trump. The baseline for a negotiated peace deal exists.

The incurious western press continues to believe and propagate the myth that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a single act of aggression by a brutal dictator, instead of the actions of a nation that has been lied to repeatedly since they were promised that NATO wouldn’t advance to the east after the Soviet Union dissolved.
Western politicians are wishfully pretending that the war has become a meat grinder a la WWI, ignoring the fact that the Russian style of warfare isn’t the same as ours. Quantity is a quality of its own, after all.
The war in Ukraine is like an MMA fight. Every fighter has a different style. We in the west like to stick and move like a prizefighter because long casualty lists quickly erode public support. The Russians like to grapple, drag their opponents to the ground, and smash them. If they take a few lumps along the way, what do you expect? It’s a fight, after all.
As Germany began to suffer defeat after defeat during WWII, their faith in wonderweapons that would tilt the balance in their favor increased. That’s what is happening in Ukraine. Artillery shells weren’t enough, so we sent them armored vehicles. Armored vehicles weren’t enough, so we promised F-16s. F-16s weren’t enough, so we sent them long-range missiles. What’s next, nukes? The sawed-off comedian LARPing as the wartime leader of Ukraine seems to think so.
Meanwhile, as Sundance, Tucker Carlson and many other non-pretending sources have demonstrated, western sanctions against Russia have had little effect on their overall war effort.

Trump is clueless about Ukraine and totally clueless about Russia.
1) Putin first wants Trump to listen and understand about the causes for the war and all the lying done by the West. Cause of the war is US and NATO. Trump must learn to accept the US caused the Ukraine war by breaking every promise to Russia and overthrowing Ukraine and installing a US puppet and then giving billions of aid between 2014 and 2022 to setup defense lines and shell and kill Donbas people.
2) Trump must also learn that Russia is not weak in any way – military, economy, socially. Russia is much stronger than the US in many ways but Trump does not understand that. Russia’s military and equipment are far far superior to anything the US and West have. Russia’s economy is booming – 8% GDP growth in the last 2 years WITH NO DEFICIT SPENDING!! Russia has only 17% debt to GDP ratio compared to the US 110% debt to GDp ratio. US GDP growth last 2 years is 5% but with 16% deficit spending. Making the real US GDP -11% for the last 2 years.
3) Trump must understand that the Ukraine, US and West are losing and losing very badly in all aspects of the war in Ukraine. Russia us winning big time and gets to set the terms.
4) Trump must be humble and accept the US involvement in causing and prolonging this war. Russia wants long term peace and no cease fire until those things are accomplished. No Ukraine NATO ever, US NATO back off pushing Russia and countries around Russia. US must accept a country’s right to do its own thing rather than the US continually trying to overthrow and sanction any country that does no accept US slavery.
Can Trump do these things. I do not think so. The people around him and his ego will not allow it. So I do not have high hopes for a quick peace until the US and West have been totally humbled and have to finally accept and listen the Russia’s concerns.
5) If Trump is not willing to listen to Putin describe the real causes of the Ukraine war, then Putin will end the discussion and politely ask him to leave and come back when he has had more time to consider the Russian perspective.
The first thing for Putin before he even starts discussing a peace settlement is that Trump and the US must accept the causes of the war from Russia’s perspective. In others words listen to reality and the truth. Hmmm is that possible.
I’m pretty sure President Trump fully understands the situation in Ukraine as well as Putin’s aims. I would bet that a peace settlement will be reached in short shrift after Trump takes office. It will be painful for Ukraine and those who have been laundering money through Ukraine, but I am confident that war will be ending in the next several months.

Ukraine withdraws its forces from the four regions annexed by Moscow – Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson
Kiev never join NATO or obtain nuclear weapons
De militarizes and becomes a neutral nation.
End to Western sanctions on Moscow.
There is not a whole lot to negotiate about. There will be no ceasefire, No DMZ (Unless the entire country of Ukraine is de militarized) No NATO peacekeeping force.
Unless Trump says yes to Putin’s demands The war will continue on. As Russia, who pretty much controls the situation holds all the winning cards. While Trump is playing with Aces and Eights.
Plus the table ante will be upped considerably a few days before January 20th. When the Russia- Iran security agreement gets ratified by Russia’s Duma. This will make Iran a full Ally of Russia. As we sink into the stinking crap hole that was once called Syria. Russia and Iran are laughing while washing their hands.

Don’t be so sure about Trump’s ability to end the war quickly. Putin is an alpha, Trump is an alpha.
The entry conditions of any negotiation are that the USA has lost a lot in Ukraine where Russia has gained strength. Whereas the USA has gained a lot in Syria / Middle East where Russia has lost a lot.
Ukraine is a core national security interest for Russia whereas the Middle East is not. The Middle East is not a core national security interest for the USA and neither Ukraine.
Russia has little left to cede in the Middle East and there are probably only a couple of important strategic interests in the region. They are likely to be stopping the Houthi from closing the Red Sea shipping lane, constraining Iran’s influence and ensuring Israeli security. So Putin has little to offer and little to gain in the Middle East. Ironically what Trump will want in the Middle East such as reopening shipping in the Red Sea rely more on Iran than Russia.
In Ukraine Russia is in a very strong position and will want to cede little. I think Trump just wants the carnage to stop. My guess is that Putin wants to hold the four Oblasts who voted to join Russia plus keep Crimea. I think these are non negotiable for Putin. That may mean Ukraine has to cede territory it currently holds to secure peace. If Putin doesn’t get that he can just keep going. Ukraine will need to be substantially disarmed, probably have a demilitarised security zone and must be neutral and not join NATO.
What does Trump have to negotiate against this? Continue the war until Ukraine is totally destroyed. This would be a total broken promise from Trump. US sanctions haven’t really hurt Russia, so they won’t be a huge bargaining chip. The reality is that the USA goes into any negotiations in a fundamentally weak position and the media and deep state will blame Trump for the loss of US prestige regardless of the start state of the negotiations.
For the USA the only worse thing than a relatively poor negotiated peace deal in Ukraine is continuing to destroy itself financially and militarily funding another losing forever war.
For Trump to secure peace in Ukraine he almost certainly has to swallow being portrayed as being ‘bested’ by Putin in the deal that is made.

Trump is incentivized to get Ukraine off his plate – the work confronting his team cleaning up the decades in the making mess in the US will require his full attention.
Russia does not want a war with the US any more than the US wants one with Russia. The full American war machine is very formidable – much more so than the proxy stuff going on the last two years.
I recall as a younger analyst when working for a contractor that supported the gov’t in many areas one division head referring to the Iraq Wars rather cynically as great venues for testing new weapons and war fighting concepts. Well, like as not, the last two years have been enlightening on Russian strengths and weaknesses.

Russia does not fear The American war machine. In 2022 after the war in Ukraine started Putin personally invited NATO to meet them on the battlefield.
