Concerning executions and extreme situations where an execution without trial could occur:
Several comments have reminded me of an article from around September 11, 2001, and I believe it was from The Atlantic, which had not gone completely Communist at that time. (I could be wrong about the source.)
The article told of a police chief in a southeast Asian country (Thailand?), where two Islamic terrorists, who had planted bombs in a city, had been captured with time-bombs in their possession.
This will sound like one of Liam Neeson’s recent revenge-epics or an episode of 24.
I believe that one time-bomb had already gone off and killed a good number of people: in the interrogation room the bombers were arrogantly refusing to talk and laughing at the officers.
The chief of police came in and said they each had one chance to tell him where the other bombs were.
They both laughed at him.
He then pulled out his revolver and shot one of them in the head.
The second bomber began talking immediately, and the bombs were found in time. Whether he was executed later, I do not know, but I suspect he was.
The article was interested in the morality, the legal ramifications of such an action.
Certainly that particular situation makes summary execution without trial seem quite satisfactory.
Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, was recently asked about the commutations of death sentences to life sentences , and he supported life sentences over a death sentence.
He thought that supporting life imprisonment was consistent with protecting unborn children from abortions.
On the other hand, unborn children have not committed murder or rape!

There are more than enough young Americans that could be taught to fill these jobs. Perhaps if the Federal Government Teachers Union was abolished this country could get down to the business of educating students in the subjects that matter like Math, Science, Reading and Critical thinking rather than the bullsh*t social justice that has been so prevalent lately.
Political biases has no place in education. Almost every Democrat run city has an Education system that is failing students because of corruption, bad budgeting decisions, and their DEI priorities. It is a well known fact that there are certain groups of teachers that will NOT be fired no matter how bad they are. Furthermore, they need to radically improve how they deal with belligerent students so that other students can actually learn.
We most certainly do Not need to import even more people from countries that have opposing cultural values and standards that have zero interest in assimilating here.
Debt is probably one of the biggest contributors to this. H1B students arrive here debt free often with a government subsidized education from their home country. How does an American student compete with that? Give up on having a car, a home or a family for decades after graduation? The cost of higher education has to be brought back down closer to affordability with summertime jobs and we need to eliminate the supply of foreign indentured servants willing to work for peanuts just to escape their home country.

End H1B and put tariffs on offshore knowledge work. In this way the education system will be incentivized to produce American STEM talent and young people will find it worth their trouble to go into the field.
Because while not perfect and at least reputationally, the US has a reliable legal system and little worry your start up innovative company will be nationalized.

Me too except our kids are deliberately being undereducated so they don’t succeed in the stem fields. We must change our education system, top to bottom, so American kids are competitive in the marketplace again.

Thank goodness there are some places high achievers can get the education they deserve. This is true at many private schools across the country. However there would probably be many more kids, those who are stuck in public school education, who are never going to achieve at their highest levels and it is seemingly done on purpose. The USA could have all those possible engineers scientists etc. to fill the jobs now being handed to foreign students especially those from India. Our university here where I live, has a major population of Indian students flooding the engineering and science programs. Has been that way for at least 20 years at increasing levels. Those who are genuinely worried about this issue (all two or three of them) can look at the reams of information that Nicole Shanahan has been putting out relating to agriculture and water usage.
Maybe they should try the guest worker programs again. Let those foreign workers come here on limited special visas and then they go home after their jobs are completed.. Families do not join them. Employers provide jobs, housing, fair wages, oversight on when the workers are to leave and transportation to and from the border. Also, no anchor babies allowed. If one worker is pregnant she must return to her country until after the child is born. Maybe limit the workers stay to 6 months and back home they go. It used to be done in a similar manner long ago.

Among other changes, the protections apply to all medical countermeasure activities provided through a federal agreement, as well as to pharmacists, pharmacy interns and pharmacy technicians who administer COVID-19 and seasonal flu vaccines and COVID-19 tests. These protections apply regardless of a federal agreement or emergency declaration.
I think that it is perfectly reasonable to challenge that “administrative action” on several grounds.
The first and foremost is the SCOTUS’s recent overturning of “the Chevron Doctrine.” Which allows legal challenges to be raised.
The second is to point out that, according to the same DHS, the “COVID ‘medical emergency'” no longer exists. The dirty fingernails I referred to earlier in this thread. This is not in a detrimental way. Our American guys can do anything they set their minds to. I admire American ingenuity.
Let me put my personal perspectives on this.
I was a Ph.D. student in the mid-1980’s at a major US research university in Chemical Engineering. 80% of the grad students in my department were foreign. Why? Higher degree salaries were actually not that much higher than just a B.S. engineering degree, so most of the undergrad American students never pursued an advanced engineering degree. In addition, the more money graduate fields were med, dental, vet, law, and business.
There is truth in what Sundance says. In general, engineering academic departments try to financially support (pay and free tuition) their grad students in 2 general ways: either as a Teaching Assistantship (TA), or a Research Assistantship. There was another group of students who were almost all foreign and these were students who were self-sufficient financially (family $) or who were sponsored by foreign governments or NGO’s or other organizations like the United Nations (guess where that $$$ came from!). Also, similar to Physics, there was 2 general types of research: theoretical or experimental. Also, keep in mind, Engineering Departments would not be flowing in $$ as research funding was almost all from the National Science Foundation. On the other hand, the Science Departments and Med Schools were flowing in NIH $$$$$ which dwarfed NSF $. These were largely not foreign grad students and in the science fields the salaries were significantly higher with grad degrees as compared to B.S. degrees.
Interestingly, just like my American counterparts, I found myself funneled into being a TA (faculty knew students despised being taught by a foreign student TA), and experimental work for my Ph.D. work as the American students, in general, were much better at the hands-on and getting the work needed for experimentation done.
A consequence of most of the grad students being foreign, most of the faculty were foreign born.
I am sure all of this continues today. After finishing my Ph.D., what was my experience in the work marketplace? Yes, it was true that employers knew they could hire foreign students on the cheap. While they had to sponsor their work visa, this was much less costly than the labor cost. After all, who was doing the pushing of hiring the cheaper labor? Why, the MBAs, of course!
Americans are definitely doers and problem solvers and are very good at it. They generally are bold and unafraid to take risks. No question about that. However, does that currently include our new generations who have gone through a terrible educational process that tries to suppress that American ingenuity and spirit? That’s what we need to reverse in changing our educational system. Let Americans run the way they are built to, from their earliest ages.
