Do you see the difference that caring family/doctors/society can make when they push against the darkness instead of shrugging and saying, “It’s your choice”?”
Sometimes it’s just one person. One single smile. One single voice of recognition. One single person who genuinely cares that you are alive, and shows it. A smile to see you can go a very very long way.
We fought this 25 yeas ago as my husband was dying of cancer. so many people pushed us — why don’t you just give up ? In a particularly frazzled moment I snarled back – “we don’t even give up when we’re wrong.” He loved to say, “I’m not dead yet” which somehow became “we’re not dead yet”, because we were that close. I wanted it on our tombstones as perfectly ‘us’ but he said no.
It was such a privilege to walk down that one way street together. Riches or poverty ? We got poverty. Sickness or health ? We got sickness (diagnosed right after marriage). War or peace ? We got war. (That’s another story). Nonetheless there was so much love and life in those 3 1/2 years of marriage, it was the grandest thing ever. Anyone can share the good times. Real beauty and meaning and priceless moments are found in the bad times.
He almost gave up once, but a kind chaplain in hospice talked to him and he rallied. In the next three months he won his long long overdue legal battle, reconciled with this children, and knew the greatest joy of his life, watching dreams he never thought possible – promises he made to his children – fulfilled. It was the happiest time in his life ever. He died happy and triumphant and victorious, peacefully just going to sleep one night, knowing he had fulfilled his purpose.
I fought a few rounds with the pushy euthanasia people before that and let me tell you it’s creepy. Very well described in Robert Bork’s book, Slouching Towards Gomorrah. These people are truly evil.
I have it written all over my emergency instructions – and recommend this for everyone — No, No, No – I want to live.
