I keep a Verizon landline active for such times as my cellphone is missing or not working. It’s $36/ mo. which can be a burden for tight budgets…
But it’s never failed to work even when the power has dropped in the area.
Try VOIP phone line from MagicJack…. $55 a year and works perfectly swell. Your wallet will thank me.
👍 Yes but VOIP uses the internet connection and my broadband (Comcast) internet goes down when grid power drops out, due to windy or icy storms.
Now, my whole house generator automatically brings power back on within about 7 seconds. The cable modem & Wi-Fi Router are plugged into a 1500 Watt Uninterruptible Power Supply so they usually do not drop out until the UPS battery is drained (takes approx. 45 minutes to an hour). So the generator prevents that from happening.
The problem is that Comcast apparently uses AC-powered signal amplifiers somewhere between our house and the distribution points (somewhere upline in our county), because our internet drops out with grid power even when my house is running via my generator.
BUT, somehow the landline keeps on chuggin’…..and I use a cheap phone that needs no external or battery power.
Interesting! And it sure does help to diversify communications providers. We have a monopoly of Spectrum at home, Tello personal cell phones (super cheap, but we don’t need fancy), Verizon cell phones for work, AT&T fiber optics for internet at work – and it’s totally random what and when each of them decide to go down, but hopefully with one down, the others stay online. Sure would like to try Starlink, but it’s much more expensive.

Yes, Comcast has the monopoly in most of our county for wired (cable) broadband. I think FIOS may be available in the two larger metro areas but not our village.
I also looked into Starlink but balked at the cost (phone + monthly service fee). Also I discovered that Elon Musk does not have 100% control over his Starlink system so if a fascist government wants to disable it in a certain country, they can.
I learned to “fortify” over the two+ decades living here. We previously lived in two other areas within the same county since 1978, and each area had unique power reliability situations.
We each have to discover the best power backup strategy for our unique circumstance..

We are about to leave and my wife stops right before we go through the door to the garage….to get something from her purse…and after about a minute of digging thru it, she starts giggling and I cant help but start to chuckle. My gut call is a storm of a power and impact rating (1,5-2) similar to Beryl, Debby, and Francine between New Orleans and Appalachicola Fri or Sat should tighten coming to the coast supported by MJO phases which favors that in 8/1. Well worth noting models in the gulf under-forecast. Headed right for max enhanced area ( actual)
Fact is the Madden Julian Oscillation is changing to phases much more conducive for tropical cyclone development. First in the Gulf and Caribbean then expanding east to the Main Development Region in the Atlantic. In fact, as I write this there are two pulses crossing N. Africa that are likely to become long run tropical cyclones and the way the weather patterns are forecast indicate there is a good chance they’ll be steered towards the eastern seaboard.
Though this season has not produced the numbers everyone predicted, and Oct 11th is the statistical peak of the season, what is important to us is what hits the US and there is a very good chance we will see three or more strong hurricanes hit US shores the 2nd half of the season.
BTW I just paid my annual weatherbell premium subscription. It was $300.00. So the stuff I get from there and share here does not come cheap. The above statement and map was on posted on twitter by Joe. But seeing what the models are projecting and the MJO forecast and implications and many other things about weather, like regional forecasts and stuff came at a cost.
Back from slipping away, which started with my feet on the ground, but overnight left me climbing a burning rope. We stopped at Fresh Thyme and there was this beautiful gal there who we used to see all the time when Savannah could barely reach the counter. We no longer live near there, so maybe been five years since seeing her. We were shocked seeing each other and she just about wept saying she missed us so much and wondered where we were.
She no longer works the front of the store, because people are AWFUL human beings. She’s the softest, kindest, gentlest lady and her tiny tot is now in middle school. Our old neighborhood has deteriorated so badly in Indianapolis. Votes have consequences.
We embraced BIG HUGS and I could tell she was just so very very sad at the breakdown of humanity.

In the same frame of mind… there’s a neighbor here who is the nastiest, ugliest, woman/man… who is horrible and nasty to everyone. I caught her video taping cars randomly like she was squealing to management. A dear nurse woman who we’ve recently befriended told me she pulled a gun on the crazy wretch because she went to her patio door and started pounding on it. She had to move apartments because the woman is unhinged. This nurse is not a crazy woman by any means, but she’s absolutely going to protect herself from being assaulted. I tried to be nice to the crazy woman when her father passed away and there was simply no reasoning with her. She was fully out to lunch and apparently has a psychiatrist as a result. Had major problems with coworkers and never took responsibility for any of her rudeness and actions.
Point here… people are batshit crazy. People, too, are looking for the others in society… who aren’t. Be bold. Extend graciousness… and by God Himself… smile. God wins this battle and we are His and He Is ours.
I don’t know if I look like a kindergarten teacher or what… but people naturally talk to me and I am grateful today, that someone remembered me from years ago and thought of us often. She hugged us warmly and you know… I too really needed those hugs.

Do not allow them. Simple people like us have the power to overcome and conquer their evil schemes. It costs us nothing but a little friendliness, a small teaspoon of trust, and more often one will find a sweetening develop. If not us then who. Everybody is waiting for a “savior”, but ask yourself – how would a savior save people who instead of being brothers are their own worst enemies. He is waiting for us to be worthy, or least put in as much effort as possible, in order to create the right atmosphere. Now we would be blind not to recognize that there are many “enemies” both within and without that would love nothing better than for us to fail, to fall to despair, eventually anger and self-destructive violence. Say NO – Say Hello.
