The majority of internet traffic is encrypted these days. The issue is that Big Tech (US based) and the USG collaborate for monitoring.
Foreign sites are harder for the USG to monitor, but that is the NSA’s job. They already have that authority. So certain USG agencies want to maintain their access by restricting the foreign encrypted messaging sites. That will drive the US users to Big Tech, thereby giving certain US agencies access to those communications that only NSA can see.

People keep making the assumption that Crooks was just some stupid, basement-dwelling freak. That doesn’t seem to be true, however. Apparently his nursing home job was temporary, and he was to start college in the fall. He was, in fact, pretty bright, especially in math and science. There was an early attempt to paint him as a bumbling, bullied dweeb who couldn’t even shoot straight. That doesn’t seem to have been the case. As for the “overseas accounts,” containing a small fortune, I am willing to wait and see. Maybe someday we will know the truth, but it’s unlikely to come from the FBI.
I don’t believe that he was a “ stupid, basement dwelling freak” to be true either. But a 20 year old + working a temporary job + 3+ foreign encrypted bank accounts + totaling $1.5M+ balances DOES NOT PASS THE SMELL TEST.

Only reason that could possibly be is that they either knew it was coming and failed to take appropriate measures OR, they were involved in some manner.
So he had a Proton mail account with VPN. I have a close group of retired military friends that all have Proton accounts that are to be used in emergencies. I have other friends that use Proton as their primary email.
