Sometimes if a person has gone through some devastating loss, life can seem to be not worth living. It seems pointless, unbearable, and sometimes, maybe more times than we realize, a reluctant decision to go on, no matter what, despite the terrible emotional pain, comes from the thoughts of what your loss of your presence, that you see as useless and without purpose would mean to others.
How can you cause them pain.? So you go on, like an automaton at first, just going through the motions, until gradually you can see there is hope and slowly relief from pain. The loss though never forgotten and the memories cherished.
God gets you through it.

…some other things I’ve learned about since my husband died ten years ago…..
–how to manage the garage door when the power goes out (which it often does in the Willamette Valley in Oregon since the infrastructure is so old and not maintained appropriately–goes out far more often here than it ever did for us in rural Minnesota in sub-zero temperatures in a 100 year old house/community)
–why to padlock the garage door from the inside ALL THE TIME when I am home, home alone necessarily
–carrying an 8″ old-fashioned screwdriver with a good wooden handle in the little storage place on my driver-side door. It will be the first thing any carjacker makes acquaintance with or any other no-gooder who tries to interfere with my normally orderly way of life. Big ol’ screwdriver right to the spleen. (when I’m angry, I’m fast: most of them will never see it coming) My hands are too weak to manage any kind of handgun and it’s a little late to be thinking I could develop useful expertise–would more likely just be providing a weapon to my assailant, and we don’t want to do that.
–Oh! If you don’t have some of those 4Patriot bright lights, gotta get ’em. I keep one in the car so that if I am ever (unavoidably) off the road and it’s dark, it becomes my bright-light-911-call. I have four of them for use in the house and give them as gifts…everybody is happyhappy to get them!

I have a very heavy flashlight I keep in the car, it would make a formidable weapon and maybe window smasher, its a Rayovac.
Bear spray is good to keep handy too. Always keep a mirror to signal with (flashes in the sun if you are in a difficult place, or marooned on a remote tropical Island, :-)) and a magnifying glass in case you have to start a fire to attract attention.
I once put in a new style ‘inside of a toilet’ I can’t remember how I did it , but very carefully. Water turned off, and a sheet of unintelligible instructions in microscopic printing.
The new insert had ‘a thingy’ that went up and down like an elevator to measure the height of the water in the toilet tank instead of an arm /lever, doohickey, attached to a hook and chain. I am sure, despite the complicated technical description, you know what I mean.
I was very proud it actually worked ! and didn’t flood the bathroom. I showed my handiwork proudly to any who came in to my house and they tried to look interested :-))
I got good at all kinds of things I did not have a clue about. After a while I got good at small drywalling jobs repairing hole and cracks in stuff. etc

I forgot to mention. I have an ‘under-the-inner-door -knob door jammer so no one can get in.
For an apartment , where I live now, I need only one, For a house you might need an extra one.
You would have a heck of a job trying to force your way in with this sturdy tool.
There are many different types of the tools and ‘different quality’ things to stop someone breaking in if you are alone.. Mine is a’ Buddy Bar’ Door Jammer. Its excellent. Buy one for your elderly or vulnerable relative, you will both sleep better. It’s not cheap but you get what you pay for.. and You deserve the best. Do a little research.
Home depot sells them I think. I got mine online (not Amazon) Don’t be fooled by imitations. as they say.
I’ll check on that. I have full metal security screen doors both front and back, which have both standard locks and deadbolts which I have really appreciated. Doesn’t mean someone couldn’t rip out the entire door frame, of course, so there’s always that!
Love the toilet installation story! About six months ago I did a toilet/tank repair, replacing the thingamabob, using instructions from my local hardware man, a youtube video, and the little card that came with the item. It worked! Much to my surprise. I kept all the paperwork until my son and his wife visited next (they live about 30 miles away) and had him check my work. Good times.
The guys at my local hardware store are the best! My husband spent his retirement years (after 40+ years as a diesel mechanic) working at Home Depot, both in MN and here in OR. He loved his work and they loved him…. Some weeks before he died he was explaining the “how tos” of something to me and said, “You know, when I’m gone, you don’t have to try to go to Home Depot for stuff….just go to the hardware store here in town. They will be able to answer questions and help you with stuff.”
He was so right. They are some of my go-to peeps. I just have to figure out what the relevant questions and and take pictures to show them.

My husband could fix anything, repair cars remodel houses, fix plumbing, and he grew up without a father to show him how to do stuff.
The father took off with another woman and his mom was left to cope with two very small children. The father abandoned his family completely. The children never even got a birthday card or Christmas card from him.
I am so glad you have good people nearby to advise you at the local hardware store. That’s the good thing about small local stores like that. When I had my house and had done a few things myself, redecorating it for example, I decided to see if I could find a handyman to help me.
( I had to get professionals of course to replace the roof which had developed a leaky area, due, I was told, to faulty shingles.)
They had been recalled by the manufacturer but only the original purchaser could get a rebate and that was not me)).
I found a terrific handyman. He had a little ad in a small local newspaper. He was a retired man who just loved doing little jobs for people and got bored around the house, as he was used to being busy. His wife was fine with it and she liked that he was doing what he wanted to do. He was very reasonable in his charges for doing the work, I was very pleased with his work and he seemed to be good at most skills.
He was such a nice man too and had wonderful stories he would tell about his past, places he had been unusual people he had met. His past interesting work sometimes in very remote places. Stories which he would share with me while I was holding one end of a measuring tape or a flashlight.
Maybe, you can find someone like that. Perhaps the hardware store might even know someone, one of their customers?. That was some years ago as I live in an apartment now, I do miss that little house, ;\and I loved my moderately sized garden and made it as butterfly and bee friendly as I could. It was full of flowers and flowering shrubs and some trees. and I miss my wonderful kind handyman. But time marches on. Ah memories.

Beautiful country and good people–still. Not all of them, of course, but I’m surrounded by old agricultural operations and the people who are involved with working and preserving those are very good people. I love ’em.
My son does lots of fishing, including in the Willamette…out to the Columbia and the ocean, crabbing, etc. as well as some inland lakes up into Washington state. He loves the water and will never leave the PNW. I’m grateful to be surrounded by all the beauty!! Everywhere I ever have to drive almost always takes me up and down hiway #99…surrounded by old growth trees, and small towns that were established in the 1800s.
I love talking with the “old geezers” who run the shops in those old towns. They are normal Americans.
