The rosetta and stained glass windows have been bricked-in of the gothic cathedral. No transcendent light to shine upon the people to illuminate the gloomy sky.
I’ve been watching a private chapel restoration at a French chateau for a few months, being done by workers who were working on Notre Dame previously; these tradesmen/craftsmen travel all over the world making the old architecture stay alive using the same methods they were built with. It has been fascinating. I would call them artists actually.
At first they were shy & didn’t talk much, but incrementally, as the owner asked more questions about how their work was going & what they were doing at the moment, they began to feel more comfortable and open to sharing their skills & techniques; they’re not using power tools, because everything is rebuilt by hand, just as it was originally built.
I love that kind of process unfolding.
I also hope they rebuild Notre Dame in the original style – the workers I’ve been watching make me think, because of their involvement, it is happening.
no amount of ‘light’ will help mankind in it’s quest to ‘exterminate itself ‘ … try hitting our collective knee’s in reverence to our ‘CREATOR’ … and shut the hell up and listen to ‘HIS’ wisdom and directions … ( to start , try the ‘BIG TEN’ … ) they weren’t suggestions …
We should also remember that Allied bombing reduced many German cities like Dresden, an industrial center, to rubble or severely damaged buildings and little doubt some compromises were made in reconstruction at the time.
Such widespread destruction is something we in the U.S. have yet to face at home….yet.
Adding to the first paragraph, Dunes2021, my wife is from Kreis Schweinfurt (Kreis=surrounding area) in northern Bavaria near the region known as the Fulda Gap. Schweinfurt was home to the two major ball bearing factories that were leveled in Jan 43. SKF and Sachs und Kugelfischer were both rebuilt postwar. One can see the postwar architecture around the city center Marktplatz, it got hit hard.
Just a quick note… Hi to Sundance …I saw his post on X (picture of what looked to me to be a a hotel room) & remembered he said he would be in a different place on Friday. Praying daily for all. 🙂
Once upon a time we had actual artists and builders.
Beautiful craftsmanship.

Visited Dresden a decade ago with German friends. Most of the beautiful restoration was post soviet occupation. The Russians did not allow such work on Religious property. A punitive position to remind the Germans of their failed war efforts.

I was there in May of 2019. Unfortunately, I was having a problem with my right foot and couldn’t do as much walking as I would like to have done. There’s some great food to be eaten in Dresden. We stayed across the river from this in “new” Dresden at a BnB that had high ceilings and beautiful, ornate millwork.

Bremen is where my father’s side of the family boarded and shipped to America, entering at Ellis.
Beautiful.
Please forward to SD: If he needs an in-depth view of German politics from a keen intellectual observer who is located here, have him send me an e-mail.

Windows bricked up. These iconic edifices are being pushed aside. How long before the muslim calls to prayer echo from those once sacred chambers?
If the people turn their backs on God, then in that vaccum, evil will take over. Luke 11:24-26. Seven times worse than before.

Different regions of Europe have quite evident differences in the degree of reverence they maintain for their sacred architecture.
Hope to live to see Notre Dame fully restored, there were no half measures in the care afforded that icon.
D’accord, et moi aussi, M. Maquis.
Translation for the non-francophones: Me too.

That is what communism does to a population.
And diversity….non german burka wearer and counterparts on a bench. They look very out of place.
We certainly have them here in the USA: Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar to name a couple.
Was that masonry installed recently? Is Bremen in the former east / communist part f Germany?

Or Spain, thank God.
Very true, Dunes.
I pray we never experience such widespread destruction here.
Better safe than storey. Sad.

Some of my family were migrating, legally, through Bremen when my grandmother was born so Bremen is her birthplace.
