Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

✝️ DAILY DEVOTIONAL, October 4, 2021
I love Spurgeon’s mighty Savior and the way he heralded Him.
Thanks for posting.
Thinking of “today”, thinking of “now”:
2 Cor. 6:2 (cf. Isaiah 49:8)
“For He says: “In the acceptable time I listened to you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” Behold, now is the time of favor; behold, now is the day of salvation.
Isaiah 55:6-7
“Seek the LORD while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the LORD, and He will have mercy on them, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.”
Hebrews 3:15a (cf. Psalms 95:7-8)
“As it has been said: “If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts…”
Revelation 22:17 (cf. Isaiah 55:1)
“The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” Let the one who hears say, “Come!” And let the one who is thirsty come, and the one who desires the water of life drink freely.”
Thinking of why:
Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
Romans 5:8
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
John 5:24
“Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life.”
Thinking of how:
Luke 18:13
“And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his chest, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’”
James 4:8a
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”
John 6:28-29
“Therefore they said to Him, “What must we do, that we may be doing the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you should believe in Him whom He has sent.””
Mark 9:24b
“‘Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.'”
Acts 16:30-31
“Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household.””
John 8:58. ESV ?

The Bee Gees scored their first UK #1 with “Massachusetts”, which would go on to sell over five million copies worldwide. Robin Gibb would later admit that The Bee Gees had never actually been to Massachusetts when they recorded the song, they just liked the sound of the name.

John Denver reached #1 on the UK singles chart with “Annie’s Song”, which had topped the US charts the previous July. He had written the song about his wife at the time, Annie Martell Denver.

Janis Ian performs “At Seventeen” on the very first broadcast of NBC-TV’s Saturday Night Live.
Here are 3 great guitar performances on historically important concert guitars. Each of these instruments have survived over the decades because they were owned by people who understood their significance, understood that they represented something important in the history of guitar making. They were carefully maintained, looked after by people who understood their significance. And so they surved. And now, we get to them played by virtuosos who can give voice to their wonderful sound . . .
I don’t know much about guitars as I am a piano player. That is a few steps below pianist. It is the same with pianos. I was once at a piano store and in the center of the showroom was a Bösendorfer. It was used and being sold on consignment. It was triple the price of the best new piano in the store. There was a sign on the piano that said “Do Not Touch.”
I asked the manager why, and he gave me a bit of a snobby lecture and that they could not just let anybody play it. I said that I wanted to see for myself what the big deal was. Since no one was around, he removed the covering, opened the piano and said, “There it is.”
The touch and action was perfection. Tones were deep and resonant. More than anything, my hands could move without thinking as everything was in the right place with perfect feel. It was a remarkable experience. When I was done. I looked at the manager and he simply said, “Now you know.”
I’m familiar with Bösendorfer. What you described is an experience we all get from playing—and understanding—great instruments. My neighbor repairs and tunes wind instruments (especially trumpets) and has said pretty much the same thing. Years ago ‘Pepe Romero let me play his famous Miguel Rodriguez guitar he calls “La Wonderful”. Playing that guitar was like going to church. To this day, it was the best guitar I’ve ever played.
After his first encounter it was the only piano Oscar Peterson would play in public.
“The Bösendorfer was something else – especially the one I encountered in the late 1970s. This piano was called ‘The Imperial’. At the end of the set I walked off during the applause and went straight over to Norman Granz (Oscar Peterson’s manager and promoter of Jazz at the Philharmonic) frightening him out of his wits by screaming:
“Dammit, Norman, where did that box come from? I gotta have one of those!”
He looked at me with his normal calm and replied:
If you like it so much, why don’t you go back and play a couple of encores on it?
“In fact, we played at least four encores, for I couldn’t get enough of that piano and, that night at least, could do no wrong on it.”
“On my next visit to Vienna I was picked up at the hotel and driven to what had been an old monastery in the heart of the city. Our party was given a tour of the whole manufacturing process, from where the piano is born to where it comes to completion. Finally we were ushered into the piano salon. This was it! Before me stood an array of 15 to 20 grands – and I mean grands! They were akin to a herd of beautiful Arabian horses, waiting to be chosen for their unique individual qualities….
“Suddenly I touched this one instrument, and it spoke to me in a way I’d never heard before: the sound seemed to run through my fingers, straight up my arms and into my whole body: ‘This is mine!’ I shouted in excitement. ‘This is the one!’
“All I knew was that I had found the most beautiful instrument I had ever played and I wanted to make it mine. My heart pounded within me as they agreed on my choice and that, after final checks and tunings, promised to ship it to me in Toronto.”
Yes. Got it. 🙂 But, when you are in the learning process that teaches you to appreciate that particular sound. . . . It sometimes takes years to learn. People who don’t know, just won’t get it.
COLUMBUS DAY
Columbus Day on the second Monday in October is observed in the United States each year. The day signifies Christopher Columbus’ arrival to America on October 12, 1492.
Christopher Columbus was long given credit for discovering North America. However, long before Columbus was born (1451-1506), Leif Erikson landed on these shores. The Italian-born explorer did sail across the Atlantic, though, and more than once. In fact, he made four transatlantic voyages. His first was in 1492. Hence the rhyme, “In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue.”
During the 1492 expedition, Columbus was looking for Asia. He and his crew landed their three ships somewhere near the modern-day Bahamas. While he may not have discovered an already populated continent, he did spur further exploration and colonization of North America.
GENERAL PULASKI MEMORIAL DAY
General Pulaski Memorial Day on October 11th, honors a Polish hero of the American Revolution.
The day is set aside in the United States to recognize Casimir Pulaski, a Polish immigrant. Over two centuries ago, he joined the Continental Army and soon rose in the ranks to Brigadier General.
Alongside General George Washington, he built a legacy that included raising an arm of the colonial military as yet undeveloped – the cavalry. As such, he became known as the father of the American cavalry.
While only 15 years-old, Pulaski earned battle experience when his homeland of Poland and Russia went to war. He later immigrated to the British Colonies after meeting Benjamin Franklin in Paris. It was Pulaski’s experience on the battlefield and his perseverance that gained General Washington’s trust. However, Pulaski would not see the end of the war. Injured in battle, he died wounds suffered at the Siege of Savannah on October 9, 1779. General Pulaski died a few days later on October 11th.
Rebel, your daily historical and ‘name of the day’ posts and photos are great. Thanks.
Yes they are. Thanks to you both.
You’re Welcome, Patriot
My Polish grandparents lived in a Polish neighborhood where all things were named Pulaski. Those newly arrived immigrants took great pride that a fellow countryman was so respected and honored in their new home. My grandpa would walk me to Pulaski park and tell me all about General Pulaski.
Thanks for triggering those memories rebel. I spend more and more time in the “wayback machine” these days.

‘ TO SERVE MAN ‘ — its a cookbook , ( Twilight Zone episode )
Now do you ‘ get it ‘ ?
Some of you do.
If you didn’t get to church this week, our little congregation would be delighted for you to join us in this audiocast of our service. If you scroll down, you’ll see the words to the lessons, hymns, and prayers.
https://stjames-lcms.org/2021/10/10/apart-from-jesus-there-is-nothing/
The sermon is based on the Gospel lesson, Mark 10:17-22, the parable of the rich young man.
If you have only a bit of time, I’ll suggest the 5 or so minutes toward the end of the service, starting at 1:05:00. It begins with the Song of Simeon from Luke 2:29-32, followed by the Gloria Patri. It might be a nice way to start the week.
Lord now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace
According to Thy Word,
For mine eyes have seen Thy salvation,
Which Thou hast prepared before the face of all people,
A light to lighten the Gentiles
And the glory of Thy people Israel.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen.
AFTER GOD’S SILENCE – WHAT?
“When He had heard therefore that he was sick, He abode two days in the same place where he was.” John xi. 6
Has God trusted you with a silence – a silence that is big with meaning? God’s silences are His answers. Think of those days of absolute silence in the home at Bethany! Is there anything analogous to those days in your life? Can God trust you like that, or are you still asking for a visible answer? God will give you the blessings you ask if you will not go any further without them; but His silence is the sign that He is bringing you into a marvelous understanding of Himself. Are you mourning before God because you have not had an audible response? You will find that God has trusted you in the most intimate way possible, with an absolute silence, not of despair, but of pleasure, because He saw that you could stand a bigger revelation. If God has given you a silence, praise Him, He is bringing you into the great run of His purposes. The manifestation of the answer in time is a matter of God’s sovereignty. Time is nothing to God. For a while you said – “I asked God to give me bread, and He gave me a stone.” He did not, and today you find He gave you the bread of life.
A wonderful thing about God’s silence is that the contagion of His stillness gets into you and you become perfectly confident – “I know God has heard me.” His silence is the proof that He has. As long as you have the idea that God will bless you in answer to prayer, He will do it, but He will never give you the grace of silence. If Jesus Christ is bringing you into the understanding that prayer is for the glorifying of His Father, He will give you the first sign of His intimacy – silence.

October 11th Devotional
This post is exactly what I needed today. I appreciate all your posts, have for years. Marietta Davis’ Beyond the Grave kept me amidst the angels. I did buy that book and thank you.
This is my first stop every morning. My home is quiet, my coffee hot, and I try to open my mind, heart and soul to Him. Your posts are part of that.
All my posts are being diverted and need to be “approved”. I am too old for censorship and I am not a “mask” person. I am a firm believer in things unfolding in God’s ways. So this message of “silence” coming at a time when I am being silenced is not a coincidence. I sincerely hope the administrators let this through to post.
My gratitude Juststevie. May God be with you and us all.
Your post has touched me…thank you! I’m glad to know that OC devotions blesses you! And yes, may God be with us all! ?
Grace to you oldschool. Stay in the Treehouse. We need you.

BE MY VOICE
PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow, that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, amen.

If you had three hours of “free time” how would you spend it? Inquiring minds want to know . . .
Question: If you had three hours of free time what would you do?
Here’s my reply:
So … This is not an IF proposition for the Christian. It is a daily imperative…
Hour one – Seek God the Father through God the Son, Jesus Christ in prayer and repentance. Call on the mighty name of Jesus! His Name is VICTORY! His Name is Righteousness!
Hour two – Seek God the Holy Spirit through His inspired Word in the Holy Bible. Seek the LORD while He MAY be found.
Hour three and throughout the rest of the day – Serve the LORD with gladness by reaching as many people as possible, locally, nationally, and internationally with material, mental, and spiritual support.
Every next day – Rinse and repeat.
If our communities, our churches, our states, our nation, IF WE WOULD follow the LORD’S plan AND MAKE THAT THE GOAL OF OUR LIVES, then we might stand a chance of reversing the evil intentions of this secular religion being foisted upon us by local, state, and national leaders!!
But, if and until we stop engaging this popular and self-absorbing culture, creating idols that take away our dedicated ‘three hours’ to Him, AND ENGAGE our time and resources to those in need around us, well, the LORD will continue to DISENGAGE Himself from us and our nation, leaving us to the misery our idols have created for us.
Three hours per day with the LORD God Almighty, or an eternity in hell.
Today you choose America. Choose life and blessings, or evil and curses from the LORD (Deuteronomy 28).
Three hours per day …
