Did Jesus Quote the Apocrypha?

“A friend of mine said that Jesus quoted from an apocryphal book (Sirach 37:2). How do I answer his insistence that this means the apocrypha belongs in the Bible?”
 
In your letter you don’t mention where the Lord is supposed to have quoted this verse, but it doesn’t matter. Even if He did, that wouldn’t prove that God wanted that book included in the canon of Scripture. The Bible mentions a lot of books that aren’t included in God’s Word.
 
For instance, in the Old Testament it mentions “the book of the wars of the Lord” (Num. 21:14). In the New Testament, Paul talked about an epistle that he wrote before the Book of 1 Corinthians (5:9). And there are many other examples of this (Josh. 10:13; 2 Chron. 9:29; 12:15; 13:22; 1 Kings 11:41; Col. 4:16; Jude 1:14; etc.).
 
The bottom line is, if God wanted those books included in His Book, they’d be in His Book. The fact that they are not indicates that they may have contained trustworthy and quotable information, but they were not “given by inspiration of God” as “all Scripture” is (2 Tim. 3:16).

There comes the moment when the chips are all down. Maybe we’ll roll 7’s . . . Watching the scenes on ths video I couldn’t halp wondering what comes next for these people? What comes next for their loyal dogs? One of the impossibly sad aspects of modern life is how isolated many people are. This is especially the case for people who are old, without family or family nearby.

The fact is that most, American families are, in various ways, atomized—because of work and career demands, few of us have the close-by family ties that American families traditionally depended on to provide support. So for many of us, we are left with loving dogs and cats.

A couple of years ago, my neighbor found a tiny little Pekingese running in the middle of a busy street. Luckily my friend picked up the little guy, who turned out to be quite old and blind . . . Although quite old, he was clean and well-fed—signs that someone really cared for him. Whaterver happened to this little guy for him to be running in the street like that? We put up signs in the neighborhood but nobody claimed him. Watching this video you can just imagine what happens to countless dogs who’s people don’t come back home. We were going to keep him but, happily, my wife found a nearby neighbor who really wanted to give this little lost dog a good home in his last years. He’d found a warm and safe home.

I saw a comment on Gateway Pundit that explained a huge failure by the Republican Party in the elections. It advised there weren’t enough local party leaders to stand up and organize poll-watchers- so there was little respect by the courts or election officials because the Republicans didn’t show up in their opinion. It was argued that the powerful Repubs don’t like having local voters with a big say in their party and this is a big part of how Dems rig all local elections (think Chicago). I would love for anyone with knowledge of this topic to bring it up for a larger discussion.

My Time at Bad Tolz (Toelz) and the context of the Dachau

Concentration Camp.

I.             Bad Tolz

“Bad” in German means “bath” or “Spa”.  That is exactly how this town nestled in the foot hills of the Bavarian Alps on the Isar river got started.  I was established as a rest stop by the Romans along their road that was used primarily to haul salt from the mines in what is now Austria and Bavarian Germany down to Rome.  The Romans liked it for it’s great mineral water baths and those same baths are open today for people to use. 

The town of Bad Tolz is just gorgeous story book Bavarian style just like one sees in the movies.  It has a granite cobble stone main street with a fountain in town center.  All kinds of shops, stands, and restaurants along the street all in beautiful Bavarian style architecture and all meticulously maintained in the Bavarian way.  And it has several spectacular and very ornate churches, some with glass cases holding the mummified remains of past saints and benefactors.  Here are some excellent photos of the town and some of it’s churches. https://www.superstock.com/stock-photography/Bad+Toelz

During the WW II Bad Tolz became a main hospital treatment facility for the wounded of Hitler’s forces.  The town had eight different hospitals in it during the war.  The hospitals and the military facilities in the area were serviced by the slave laborers that came from satellite camps run by the SS HQ at the main facility at the near by Dachau concentration camp.

My time (Dec. 1986-Dec. 1989) at Flint Kaserne in Bad Tolz was great. I had my wife and two kids with me and they loved it too. The family quarters were great. Our quarters were in building 131. Here is a diagram of the facilities. USAREUR Units & Kasernes, 1945 – 1989 (usarmygermany.com)

This is what the family quarters buildings of the style we lived in looked like from the outside: We lived on he third floor so had an excellent view of the surrounding scenery. 2003 Flint Kaserne – dcsutherland (smugmug.com) Inside they were beautiful wood and well finished out and had all hardwood floors. Ours had four bedrooms a full bath and a ½ bath.  Of course everything was on German electrical service so one had to be careful what they plugged in.   From our third floor dining area window we looked out on the mountains to the south. Here are some general pictures of the facility with a short history of 10th SFG(A) there.  Of course hauling groceries up could be a pain as was having to go down into the basement of the building to do laundry or access our storage.

This facility had been completed in 1943 during the height of WW II to train foreigners to be Waffen SS officers. The school was called the Junkersshule or in direct English translation the “Campaigners School”.  What many people today don’t realize is that almost 2/3 of the SS were actually foreigners.   Most joined because of their fear of communism.  Some were strongly anti-Semitic but it seems the vast majority were not.

When the Junkersshule was competed It had the best and latest of everything at the time.  It is sometimes hard to believe that during WW II as the US forces and their allies advanced across Europe it was targeted to be bombed by the US Army Air Force several different times.  Each time the bombing missions were weathered out and the facility saved.  Here is a link to a U-tube video of a Nazi propaganda film showing foreigners training at the school.  My boy played football on the athletic field where they show these SS officers to be training while I sat on the concrete bleachers that they had sat on.

As with nearly all SS facilities in Germany the allies took it over for their own military use when it was captured.  So the SS school at Bad Tolz became a US possession and per treaty could be held for US use in perpetuity if it was so desired.  As US forces approached the commandant of the school led his faculty and class off into the mountains to avoid capture.  I walked the route they took and found a rusted cylindrical steel German gas mask container laying half buried on a steep slope down hill from the trail.  The mask was gone but still in the intact in the bottom of the container were the plastic eye pieces for the mask in various shades.  They were still in their original waxed paper wrappings.  I could imagine some dejected and defeated German soldier chucking the thing off down there as he walked along to get away from the approaching allies.

The place was heaven for the military historian in me. When I was there the beautiful Bavarian construction quadrangle and other facilities were still pretty much as they had been when the place was built with some modernization of the facilities of course. Every time I walked from my family quarters across the street down the staircase to my team room on the first underground floor the history around me pervaded every step. At the bottom of the staircase were the imprints in concrete of the German hob nailed boots of the period put there in 1943 by a workman or slave laborer who was building the place. 

On the floor below still in the original German, was the sign for the bomb shelter.  The facility originally had 7 or 8 underground floors.  When the US took it over they allowed the bottom floors to flood because they feared they were booby trapped with demolitions. 

There were four underground floors that weren’t flooded.  The bottom floor was generally closed off and consisted of a lot of plumbing.  The next one up had various storage rooms.  The next one up housed things like the NBC (nuclear biological chemical) office. The next floor up, the first underground floor is where all the teams were housed along with their respective company HQs.  Much of the four main above ground floors was used as barracks housing for bachelor soldiers.  The top floors on south end was used by Special Forces in Europe guys who were to support all special operations in Europe in event of war.  They wore the green berets with the green flash and diagonal lines that once was worn by all those in 10h group.  The upper floors of the front side of the quadrangle were used by the 7th Corp NCO course and it also contained Gen. George Patton’s office with the desk that was supposedly Field Marshal Erwin Rommel’s desk in North Africa and other possessions of Patton such as a couple of his foot lockers .  This room was maintained as a little museum. 

In the walls along the halls on the main ground floor of the huge quadrangle were inset rifle racks made to hold the standard issue bolt action 8 mm Mauser rifles the Germans used in WW II. Even the emergency generator was a WW II German diesel with electrical generator that was manufactured for powering U-boats originally and the Germans just had one shipped and installed in a shed to provide emergency lighting.  There had been an underground garage under the court yard of the quadrangle for the SS schools vehicles but it had been sealed off.

The inside pistol range had been turned into a bowling alley but we swam in the same inside pool that the SS officer trainees had been trained in. We ran on the same outside track they had ran on. We worked out and played basketball in the same gym they had used. We ate in the same mess hall they had eaten in. We did our ski training on the same mountains they had trained in. 

When I first arrived there was even a former German soldier that Patton himself had hired during the occupation still working in that mess hall.  That soldier had been badly wounded while fighting in Rommel’s  Afrika Corp in North Africa and been invalided out of the Army during the war.  In the theater we sat in the same seats in the theater they had sat in. And a couple of those that sat in the front center row would have been sitting in the same seats that Hitler’s henchmen, Jospeh Goebbels, Reich minister of propaganda,  and Herman Goering, 2nd only under Hitler and head of the Luftwaffe, both sat in those two front row seats at different times.  Goebbels was there for the opening dedication and Goering came later for a tour.  

The bar in the NCO club was the same one that had originally been installed there and working behind that bar was a German that had worked there most of his life.  During the war as a kid the SS had broken both his legs when he had failed to salute them as they were marching on parade in downtown Bad Tolz.  US soldiers used the same motor pool facilities Hitler’s German soldiers did except one garage had been turned into the “Rigger shed” where our parachutes were packed, maintained and stored.  The SS officers commandants old house served as the Officers Club with the upstairs bed rooms fitted out as suites for VIP visitors which we had a lot of. 

I was assigned as a medic and later Medical Supervisor to ODA 071, Co. A., 1st Bn., 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) my whole three years there. It was pure heaven for this mountain warrior. Before being stationed there I was at the facility in Tolz several times on temporary duty during my 8 1/2 years of team time in Special Forces.

During my time assigned at Bad Tolz I “Berg Heiled” (the traditional German expletive made upon reaching the peak of a mountain) about every mountain of any size in Germany and most of the higher peaks in Europe, including Mt. Blanc. 

During the Winter of 1986-87 I was selected to take military ski instructor training. That winter I started skiing on a glacier in Austria in mid October and did not go two consecutive days without skiing until I completed participating the  Italian Army Special Forces ski training at Vipitano, Italy at the end of April the following year. It just so happened that the alps had the best snow fall in a decade that winter and at places I was skiing virgin powder up to my waist.

II.             Dachau a dark history

 
All in all my assignment to Flint Kaserne in Bad Tolz was the best of my 11+ years of active duty.  The Bavarian Germans are wonderful industrious people.  But there was an undercurrent that the historian in me had a difficult time understanding. 

 
Along with all that beauty and interesting history there was a dark history. It was like an undercurrent that one could not get away from. The hospitals in Tolz during the war had been serviced to a large extent by slave labor. The magnificent Junkersshule was built using slave labor.

Not far from Bad Tolz was the town of Dachau. It is the location of the first of Hitler’s concentration camps of WW II and the only one in Germany that has been partially preserved as a memorial. I visited this camp twice. Once was not enough. After the first time, and after having been in Bavaria for a time and gotten to understand the people I just had to understand how they allowed this horror to happen.

The worst camps were not in Germany and all were destroyed shortly after the war. It was as if everyone wanted to forget the mass murder and horrors that had occurred in those camps.

The camp at Dachau was not started as an extermination camp for the Jews. It was started to house Hitler’s political prisoners. This is why fabricated into steel the gates at the main entrance of the camp are the words “Arbeit Macht Frei” (Work will make you free). https://www.kz-gedenkstaette-dachau.de/index-e.html

Bavaria was where Hitler’s political power base was and so what better place to build his first concentration camp. Those that opposed Hitler’s regime and were not killed out right were put into the labor camp at Dachau. Once properly motivated and indoctrinated or terrorized some were let free back into German society.

Gradually more and more Jews were incarcerated at the camp in Dachau and by January of 1942 when Hitler issued the orders for the “Final Solution” for the rounding up and mass murder of all Jews, Gypsies, and other undesirables in German occupied territories, the population was virtually all Jewish.

The German camps were not exclusively for extermination. Dachau, like the other concentration camps, served as the central disbursement and administration center for farming out slave labor. Each large concentration camp like Dachau had several smaller satellite camps that they supplied the slave laborers to. Dachau administered and supplied their human slaves to eight different camps spread throughout Bavaria. From these smaller camps the slave labor needed by the Nazis and their war machine were issued to the local factories, building projects, and in the case of Bad Tolz, the hospitals.

Dachau never became an extermination camp of the scope of Buchenwald or the other nightmare concentration camps. There, gas chambers disguised as showers were built but they were never used. But still hundreds of thousands died there, from abuse, malnutrition, and firing squads. the gas chamber at Dachau was never used. At this early date they thought it had because of the bodies found just outside but those bodies were there waiting to be incinerated in the near by crematorium after any gold fillings in their teeth or anything else of value found in or on their bodies had been removed.

After two trips to Dachau and much contemplation I came to realize that good people can be made to participate or at least turn their eyes from such evil. That none of us, no matter what country we are from are immune unless we are honest with ourselves and have the courage to see the truth. Evil will abide in any man or women if they allow it.

In these difficult times many Americans are regrouping. People are seeking new public forums. They are trying to assess what went wrong and how to prevent it from happening again. And they are discussing where we should go from here and how to get there.

I hear people saying things like:

And then I ask myself: ‘but… who has “a record” that isn’t absolute weak sauce?’

Where are the republicans ACTUALLY fighting to END THE FEDERAL RESERVE?

Where are the Republicans FIGHTING to repeal the 16th amendment?

Where are the Republicans FIGHTING to criminalize abortion except in very, very rare cases of incest or other extreme cases?

Where are the Republicans FIGHTING to bring back Christian prayer and the Holy Bible in public schools? They promote Islam and ban Christianity. When America was a Christian nation we were prosperous and free – you do the math

Saul Bradley and Wictor only believe in getting attention for themselves and CULTivating the heartbroken, and justifiably angry and fearful MAGA movement to follow their pied piperism and fortune cookie predictions

I didn’t break a single one of your rules. You banned me not because of “promoting conspiracy” like you said, which is a pathetic lie, but because I hit on one or more of your PERSONAL pet peeves which could only have been one of the following:

1. Allowing Christianity in the public schools

2. Declaring the OBVIOUS TRUTH that our country is overrun by Marxists and marxism from top to bottom in the government and national institutions

Or stopping the abortion on demand for profit industry.

You see, wall street has been betting against this company’s stock hoping to make money off the stock’s price decline using the method called ‘shorting a stock’. However, if the stock price rises then those who ‘short the stock’ can lose the bet and lose alot of money. Big Wallstreet bets against companies all the time and can drive them out of business by betting against their stock just to make a profit. So individuals around the country and the world are beginning to fight back by buying the company’s stocks to help keep the share price high. This is an opportunity to join in to stand against the wolves of Wallstreet.

Good morning fellow refugees. Some things I pray can encourage many of you. First we had a great president for 4 years. In the course of history good leaders are as rare as hens teeth (as Granny would have said). Our own history bears this out, as does the history of countless other nations and lands. And America has been especially blessed in the good leaders category, yet they were all fallible men and many were subpar at preserving us a nation under our US Constitution.
Next I want to you to be encouraged because our kingdom is eternal and Jesus is King. If Jesus is your Savior then you are already seated in the Heavens with Him. Read the book of Ephesians. Look at the crazy folks around you with serenity and compassion and when they ask you what is the reason for your peace, tell them that Heaven is grand and I am already there!
Also a recommendation. Spend some money and purchase a book by Rod Dreher called Live not by Lies. It is a manual for living in world gone crazy. Read it twice and be encouraged that we are not the first, and barring the return of our Lord Jesus, not the last to suffer under totalitarianism. Ultimately we will suffer for Christ and that is a good thing. If you don’t believe that then read again your New Testament. But do not just read Live not by Lies, put it into practice. Open your homes for meeting people and sharing truth. The biggest church in the world is after all a home church and it is flourishing in the most repressive nation on earth… China.
Pray for our human enemies. They are currently on a trajectory of eternal suffering and damnation and we should desire that no one suffers that fate. Resist in Jesus name our spiritual enemies of Satan and his demons for their fate is sealed, they are already defeated. Finally, give the world no hold on you. Do not covet the things of this earth (money, power or comfort) but thank God for what He does provide as earthly blessings and use them for His ministry to those less fortunate.
Finally a thought as I get ready to pay the piper (tax man). Consider changing your giving to the Lord to avoid it being given as a tax deductible donation. Or become prepared to do so. We support various missionaries across various reputable organizations. I am asking them to be ready to receive our support as a direct gift when their organization is attacked and de platformed. I am also trying to plant the word for the organizations themselves to be ready to become invisible to the state and still accomplish their work.

I couldn’t answer your question on that, because I don’t really know. I only know that I wouldn’t want to take it. It could just be a massive and widespread case of stupidity and greed. Even so, my understanding is that it takes 7 years to bring a relatively safe and effective vaccine to market. Yet here we have vaccines being developed in a year or less? My purpose in logging on today was to lament my personal crisis in my understanding of God.
Something that came to mind was the phrase “malaise of the spirit” which was attributed to Jimmy Carter, so I went and looked that up to refresh my memory.

It turns out that the term ‘malaise’ wasn’t used by Jimmy, it was Ted Kennedy and Ronald Reagan’s term.

I did find this very interesting article on Jimmy’s speech, from back in 2019, when the world was so much more normal than it is now.

My personal crisis of faith- back in 2016 when Donald J. Trump won the presidency, I was sure that God had chosen this unlikely man to lead our country out of danger.

Now I see a stolen election, and a church more focussed on “safety” than on the Gospel. I don’t get it. This doesn’t make me not believe in God. What it makes me do is doubt my ability to have any understanding of God’s will.

Did you ever rewatch a movie or TV show that you saw in your childhood, and realize what you thought it was about then was all wrong?

That’s where I am now, with life in general.

Leftwing media darling Bob “Beto” O’Roarke is talking like he will run for governor of Texas against incumbent Gregg Abbott in 2022. All the usual suspects will be puffing him up during the next two years.

At a distance, upon a superior plain I saw a dome of light. “That,” said my guide, “is the gateway leading to the City of Peace. There the manifestation of thy Redeemer is made visible. There saints and angels abide; on harps of gold, and stringed instruments, with immortal lyres, in alleluias, chant the Song of Redemption; the song of peace; the song of love undying.”

“May I enter there?” I inquired.

Again she touched my lips, and they moved, uttering praise in unaccustomed accents which melted into the harmony of celestial love.

As we drew near, a class of attendants, more glorious, gathered around the gateway, and one foremost addressed my guide in language I could not understand. Music, the music of love, was in their conversation, and joy as a halo, encompassed them as they welcomed us at the entrance of the Holy Sanctuary.

A gate of jasper, set with diamonds, opened, and two angelic beings approached, and taking me by the hand, let my tremulous spirit towards an inner gate, a more immediate entrance to the pavilion of light.

Then I remembered my discordant state; then thought of my former sins, my doubts, and rebellious nature, rushed upon my mind, and feeling entirely unprepared to endure the glory of the assemblage, my spirit failed me. The angelic attendants then bore me in their arms along the portal to the feet of a being most glorious. Upon his head was a crown of pure light, and over his shoulders hung golden locks! His loveliness, can never be expressed.
