Thursday October 1st – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

The site’s having WP issues.I’ll try to repost my reply to GB Bari & Dutchman on the ADP thread. Here goes.
      RE: ADP thread comments
In response to GB Bari & Dutchman’s fear about another foreclosure meltdown.
The implosion was earlier this year. We’re well on the way to recovery. Try and look at it this way; economically, we’re all in the same system.
Government has no legal authority to keep a person incarcerated in their home or prevent a(n) eviction/foreclosure for non payment. These are actions of voluntary compliance whether you know it or not. We’ve been there done that, Everybody loses in a market collapse. Winners were tired of losing so they chose a different direction for the future. Sore losers refuse to accept their defeat. Too bad. That’s life.
Like Reagan said many years ago, ‘the choice is not right or left, it’s up or (D)own.’
If you want to see a market collapse, watch what happens if the Government ‘takes’ Trillions more out of the private sector in the name of ‘economic stimulus’ at the initial stages of this robust recovery. Someone has to liquidate [stocks, real estate. etc.] those Trillions of $ in order to purchase the ‘newly minted’ next to 0% ROI debt issuance.
Only a Government employee could possibly believe that you can lose your ass on every deal and make it up in volume. [Think negative interest rates]
Useful i[D]iots think that goods and services can be purchased with the magical fruit of the mythical money tree.
Investment capital will seek the most lucrative legal ROI which is always in the private sector[Main+Wall St.]. Removing Trillions more $ from the capital markets is an economic (D)eath wish. Nobody is going to voluntarily loan any Government $ without a substantial increase in interest rates, which no Government can afford given the current interest paid to service the existing debt.
The only solution is free market capitalism, creating profit [accretive to the value of the dollar] as opposed to Government debt [dilutive to the value of the dollar].
Now, who wants the free market to remain ‘shutdown’?

    Does Christ Make You Happy?

    By Justin Johnson

The ultimate goal in life for many is to be happy. Advice to be happy is so ubiquitous as to be cliché. Even some Christians have fallen for this trap of thinking.

    “Do what makes you happy!”
“Avoid people that rob your happiness.”

As along as they are happy, life is good. Unhappiness is the enemy. They sacrifice all for happiness, without which life would have no real purpose.

But if this were right, then why would we need Christ to be happy? You can be happy without him. In fact, many are happier without him.

Jesus Christ lived a shorter life than the average rock star, and died by crucifixion without saying a word in his own defense. Was Christ happy on the cross?

People who name Christ are slaughtered, chased from their house, tortured, and starved in some countries. In our own country being a Christian may get you mocked by the talking heads and town atheists. Not a happy experience either way.

Ignorance is bliss, but learning the truth from Christ about sin and righteousness exposes the realities of a broken world and humanity. Where is happiness in living the Christian life?

This must be why I’ve never seen “knowledge of Jesus Christ” and “fellowship of his sufferings” on any list of habits by happy people.

“If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.” – 1 Cor 15:19

    The Gospel of Happiness

If happiness is the ultimate goal in life, then Jesus Christ can easily get in the way.

Christ did not come to make men happy, nor does he promise us a life of happiness now. Why would anyone want to be a Christian, potentially sacrifice their happiness, and sometimes their lives to know him?

Christians know not every frown is turned upside down by pursuing personal happiness. Not every problem can be solved by eating your eggs sunny side up and looking at the bright side of life.

Can happiness replace Christ? Certainly not. The gospel of happiness ignores real problems supposing that achieving happiness is possible by everyone at all times. In other words, living life just to be happy is living in a dream world. It is fake, juvenile, and ignorant.

Isn’t there a way to be happy without hiding the truth? (Prov 3:13)

The best “a happy life” can do is make terminally ill patients feel better on their deathbed. They still die in their sins. Their families are still sad. Unhappiness abounds.

It is far better to give those who are dying the cure for death, even if it requires momentary pain, harsh realities, and unhappiness toward us. Would not the cure bring more lasting joy than whatever personal happiness exists without it?

    Happiness and Christ

Happiness is wonderful, but it is not the purpose of life, nor is it the answer to real life problems.

So, what is the alternative to being happy all the time? Are Christians ministers of sadness, grumpiness, and general negativity? Nonsense! Christians minister salvation from this depressing condition through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

What we need is the truth about life now, and a way for us all to have new life. Where do we find righteousness that solves all wrongs, peace that endures, and joy that lasts beyond our vain masquerade of happiness?

Jesus Christ is “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

This is why Christ died, and why people are willing to die knowing him. God provides forgiveness of sins, righteousness, and new life freely in Christ Jesus.

Life in Christ is greater than a happy life without him (Mal 3:15; Prov 11:4).

    Joy in the Christian Life

What prevents perpetual misery in the Christian life? The hope of resurrection glory in Christ Jesus.

Happiness can be as fleeting and rare as the rainbows it rides in on. Christ is alive today and forever, and his death and resurrection is offered unto you for eternal life.

Though the Christian may at first appear to do everything wrong to achieve happiness, a life with Christ is the only way to know longsuffering with joyfulness.

The gospel of happiness is certainly not the gospel we preach. We preach the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the glory of his resurrection after death. There is joy found in this hope of glory. There is contentment and glory in Christ.

Life is not about finding true happiness, but about finding true life in Christ Jesus. Trust God to provide what you need (Eph 2:7). Have no confidence in what you think makes you happy (Phil 3:3).

Do not choose to act based upon what makes you happy. Make choices according to the will of God.

If your happiness is robbed by this world, then rejoice in the Lord and not in yourself.

If life does not make you smile, shed tears in prayer to God being thankful that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared to the glory which shall be revealed in us in Christ Jesus (Rom 8:18).

“Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.” – Romans 12:15
“Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.” – Phil 4:4

    The Water Of Life

    By Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

For almost twenty-four hours, recently, Chicagoans had to boil their drinking water! Millions of small fish had jammed the water intakes far out in Lake Michigan, and had died there. It was, of course, a major operation to clear them all away and to make sure that Chicago’s drinking water was uncontaminated.

It is of the utmost importance, always, that the water we drink is pure and fresh, and this is no less so where spiritual matters are concerned. The Bible has much to say about stagnant water, and foul water, and poisoned water, but the water which God would give to us is called in Scripture, “the pure water of life,” doubtless because it is so wholesome and refreshing.

Perhaps the reader will recall the picture our Lord drew for that fallen Samaritan woman at the well of Sychar. John 4:10-14 tells how he and this woman had discussed Jacob’s well. Somehow she seemed to sense that He was contrasting her vain pursuit of pleasure with eternal life, when He said:

“Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again, but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him, a [fountain] of water, springing up into everlasting life” (Vers. 13,14).

How true this is! The pleasures of this world do not satisfy. Men go on “pursuing pleasure” to keep from being bored, but the everlasting life that God gives to those who trust in Christ is a never-ending source of refreshment and joy. Also, it provides the greatest incentive to serve Him. Those who possess the joy of sins forgiven and of peace with God naturally long to serve and please Him, and God desires no service except that which springs from genuine gratitude and love.

“We love Him because He first loved us” (I John 4:19).

    To the Reader:

Some of our Two Minutes articles were written many years ago by Pastor C. R. Stam for publication in newspapers. When many of these articles were later compiled in book form, Pastor Stam wrote this word of explanation in the Preface:

“It should be borne in mind that the newspaper column, Two Minutes With the Bible, has now been published for many years, so that local, national and international events are discussed as if they occurred only recently. Rather than rewrite or date such articles, we have left them just as they were when first published. This, we felt, would add to the interest, especially since our readers understand that they first appeared as newspaper articles.”

To this we would add that the same is true for the articles written by others that we continue to add, on a regular basis, to the Two Minutes library. We hope that you’ll agree that while some of the references in these articles are dated, the spiritual truths taught therein are timeless.

John 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

We need; people to populate a VII amendment jury of peers to bring forth a verdict that has no appeal in law in Our Article III one supreme Court claiming original jurisdiction. We often see sudden destruction falling upon the wicked in the Bible. The unrepentant living during Noah’s time, experienced a sudden and catastrophic flood (Gen. 6-9). They had 120 years to repent as Noah preached to them, but they chose to ignore him and judgment suddenly fell (Gen. 6:3-7).

Have you noticed that in 2020, everything has happened suddenly?”

  26. just stevie says:

“Jesus leadeth them up into a high mountain apart by themselves.” Mark ix. 2

We have all had times on the mount, when we have seen things from God’s standpoint and have wanted to stay there; but God will never allow us to stay there. The test of our spiritual life is the power to descend; if we have power to rise only, something is wrong. It is a great thing to be on the mount with God, but a man only gets there in order that afterwards he may get down among the devil-possessed and lift them up. We are not built for the mountains and the dawns and aesthetic affinities, those are for moments of inspiration, that is all. We are built for the valley, for the ordinary stuff we are in, and that is where we have to prove our mettle. Spiritual selfishness always wants repeated moments on the mount. We feel we could talk like angels and live like angels, if only we could stay on the mount. The times of exaltation are exceptional, they have their meaning in our life with God, but we must beware lest our spiritual selfishness wants to make them the only time.

We are apt to think that everything that happens is to be turned into useful teaching, it is to be turned into something better than teaching, viz., into character. The mount is not meant to TEACH us anything, it is meant to MAKE us something. There is a great snare in asking – What is the use of it? In spiritual matters we can never calculate on that line. The moments on the mountain tops are rare moments, and they are meant for something in God’s purpose.
