Saturday February 15th – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

Here is a site that has a great map showing the extent of the virus world wide. The map updates so you can reload it and see the latest numbers. The US is reporting only fifteen cases so far but that will of course change. Let’s all hope and pray that the change is for the better. The virus has been reported in numerous countries which is not good as it is possible for someone to fly in from a country other than China and spread it.

If the mountain seems too big today,
    Then climb a hill instead.
If the morning brings you sadness,
It’s okay to stay in bed.
If the day ahead weighs heavy
And your plans feel like a curse,
    There’s no shame in re-arranging,
    Don’t make yourself feel worse.
If a shower stings like needles
And a bath feels like you’ll drown,
If you haven’t washed your hair in days,
    Don’t throw away your crown!
A day is not a lifetime,
    A rest is not defeat.
Don’t think of it as failure,
    Just a quiet, kind retreat.
It’s okay to take a moment
    From an anxious, fractured mind.
The world will not stop turning
    While you get realigned.
The mountain will still be there
When you want to try again,
So climb it in your own time
    …and love yourself ’til then.

    Walk, Don’t Run!

    By Pastor Ricky Kurth

“…as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk… Art thou called being a servant? Care not for it…” (I Corinthians 7:17,21).

Some Christians find it troubling that the Bible counsels slaves to be content in their difficult circumstances, and walk in obedience to their masters rather than run away from them in rebellion (Eph. 6:5; Col. 3:22). But there were legitimate reasons why men were slaves in those days, and God has never been in favor of freeing “a lawful captive” from his owner (Isa. 49:24).

The Apostle Paul did tell slaves, “if thou mayest be made free, use it rather” (I Cor. 7:21). For example, if a man was a slave because he was working off his financial debts, if someone offered to pay his debts, this was benevolence that no servant should ignore. But if there was no legitimate means by which a servant could be made free, it was God’s will that he walk in the calling wherewith he had been called (I Cor. 7:17).

Of course, unbelievers think that this is terrible advice, and they aren’t shy about criticizing the Bible for not encouraging slaves to run away from their masters. But that’s because they’re thinking of the kind of slavery that existed in the early days of our country, when innocent people were kidnapped from Africa and brought here as slaves to serve in an illegitimate form of bondage. This type of slavery is condemned in Scripture, and those who dared perpetrate it in Israel were given the death penalty (Ex. 21:16). Yet even when men were kidnapped and wrongfully enslaved, Paul’s advice to be content in servitude was good counsel, for often it was just not possible for slaves to escape bondage, and God does not wish His children to live lives of abject frustration and misery.

But if you are thinking that it is equally impossible to “care not” for being a slave, consider the counsel that Paul went on to give servants in the very next verse,

“For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord’s freeman…” (I Cor. 7:22).

The key to finding contentment as a slave was to remember that believing slaves were free men in the eyes of the Lord. In other words, the secret to being content in the harsh circumstances of bondage was for servants to look past their circumstances and focus on how God saw them in Christ. That is, when slaves couldn’t change their circumstances, the key to contentment was to change how they thought about their circumstances.

Now, is there anything you can learn from that about your difficult circumstances? Sometimes our situation in life can’t be changed any more than a slave could change his. Of course, if there is a legitimate means by which you might be made free from your difficulties, by all means do what Paul told slaves to do with such an opportunity and “use it.” But if you can’t change your circumstances, why not follow Paul’s advice and change the way you think about them?

If life has you feeling like a captive for whom there is no escape, never lose sight of the spiritual reality that you are “the Lord’s freeman.” Focusing on the problems that have you feeling imprisoned will only make you as miserable as the slave who focused on his. Focusing on “the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free” (Gal. 5:1) is the only path to rejoicing.

    It’s the secret of life.

1 Corinthians 7:17 But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches.

1 Corinthians 7:21 Art thou called being a servant? care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather.

    Ephesians 6:5 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;

Colossians 3:22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:

Isaiah 49:24 Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered?

Exodus 21:16 And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.

1 Corinthians 7:22 For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord’s freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ’s servant.

Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

A Specially Selected Group of Wounded Warriors Find a New Mission: Hunting Child Predators
Posted: Feb 13, 2020 by Jason Piccolo

A day can’t go by without an arrest of a child predator broadcast online. Several of these predators were hunted by a scarcely known group of specially trained law enforcement operatives that were recruited from the ranks of the U.S. military. The operatives all had something in common; they bore wounds from their service to the Nation. Starting in late 2013, with little fanfare, this select group of wounded warriors deployed throughout the United States with a new mission, tracking down child predators and rescuing children.

These were not normal men.. this was not a normal company.. they were a clan.. they were the company..

I wanted to be the best.. the best in the world.. so much that I was willing to die trying.. isn’t that what life in this world is all about.. to be the best that you can be..

We all put our team first.. our company first.. our mission first.. above everything else.. most everybody on the team had a broken heart story..

Then the best closed their doors forever… I thought those days would never end.. I had paid my dues.. but it was too late for me.. the roses were all long gone.. I was a loner.. and now I was alone again.. an all too familiar place..

During all those years.. I wasn’t the heart breaker.. I was the broken heart.. by circumstance.. by an art of vague assumptions.. I was a person of doubtful reliability.. and questionable mentality.. I had fit right in.. a fck’n diver..

Choices that you will have to live with.. some good.. some bad.. and I’m ok with it.. I have no regrets.. it was my choice.. so I deal with it.. most every day..

But there are other things that play into it.. things you have no control over.. it was not that long a time in a linear fashion.. but it was a lifetime in depth..

I found out that nothing lasts forever.. except for love.. I loved them all.. and still do..

it is better to have loved..

than to have never loved at all.. is forever..

I think I see a strategy for both Evil and Good in this country:

Lindsey Graham, for all his soft characteristics, seems to be pro military. He was against withdrawal. He was for war.. But he’s good at generating “outrage”. He works for he Military Industrial Complex..

Glenn Beck has a book called “Addicted to Outrage”. He went bat guano crazy for a while and I think into treatment. He had alcohol problems, but in this book basically describes Outrage as something that people can get addicted to.

Like many addictions, it is connected to a basic need for survival:
    Obesity is Food addiction: healthy vs unhealthy eating;
Sex/Porn/Love addiction: Need for connection to people
Power, prestige addiction: need for stability and to be able to stay safe

Our founders set up our government to keep too much power and money out of the hands of too few people. In history, this always turns out bad.

The left uses the media to stir up outrage, fear, guilt, shame. These are emotions that cause us to override common sense or logical thinking because we think we must act now. Outrage/emotions are used by the media, and especially with careful manipulation in social media – to cause division among families and cultures which were the back bone of the USA..

What keeps us together is a common commitment to principles, and resulting Law and Order we framed and agreed on. The left uses outrage to stir up emotions to get us to forsake family, church, respect for authority, relationship to God, commitment to each other.

Rules for Radicals and the Communist Manifesto are destructive forces. They are processes. I don’t know what drives these people, but it is an anti God force.

The God of Israel laid down the 10 commandments, then slowly taught us that it was the heart that matters not the Law — the the Law, was just a guide to matters of the heart — which is where our spirit resides.

The prophets of old, Jesus, the Apostles, and the early church; the current spread of the gospel, the American Revolution, MAGA, and recovery from addiction are all facilitated by the same processes and components: A knowledge base of Truth, A process: submission to God through submission to each other in humility, careful inventory of character, then relationships, then carry the message.

Locking criminals up and winning elections is important, but will not win the war. We must do more. We must restore the Spirit back into America.

    MAGA: Make America Godly Again

We must put sunlight on the effects of evil wherever people are hurting. Show why the poor are poor (enslavement by dependency), the illness to society caused by siphoning and diverting money away fro its intended purposes (all the fraud and abuse), bring the message to the poor, the criminals, the widows, the families of dead victims, the thwarting of what this country used to protect: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness. (fair opportunity that recognizes the value of work). Carry the message of the economic principles and values of Love, benevolence, commitment to greater good. Synergize and make the whole better than the sum of the parts.

This is the call of Socialism, which is why it is so alluring to our youth. The difference is where the power resides. In socialism, the power resides in the ruling wealth redistributors, and it works if the redistributors are benevolent. But history proves this does not work.

In our Republic, the power resides in the people, who elect their representatives, executives, and judges to keep our society ordered by the principles of the Constitution. Its success depends on the goodness of the people. The goodness of the people, depends on their commitment to Truth.

I’m reposting this from my post on another thread

I have been musing on that very topic myself, as I have just experienced outrageous behavior from the same sources as in the recent past.

Yes, you do feel a need to act when these things occur.

We just had a stabbing in an area mall yesterday, someone inspired outrage in someone else, and it resulted in blood on the floor.
I think these people are on the receiving end of not so subliminal messaging in the media, and they don’t know what it is, so they can’t defend themselves against it.

“None of us liveth to himself.” Romans xiv. 7

Has it ever dawned on you that you are responsible for other souls spiritually before God? For instance, if I allow any private deflection from God in my life, everyone about me suffers. We “sit TOGETHER in heavenly places.” “Whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it.” When once you allow physical selfishness, mental slovenliness, moral obtuseness, spiritual density, everyone belonging to your crowd will suffer. “But,” you say, “who is sufficient for these things if you erect a standard like that?” “Our sufficiency is of God,” and of Him alone.

“Ye shall be My witnesses.” How many of us are willing to spend every ounce of nervous energy, of mental, moral and spiritual energy we have for Jesus Christ? That is the meaning of a WITNESS in God’s sense of the word. It takes time, be patient with yourself. God has left us on the earth – what for? To be saved and sanctified? No, to be at it for Him. Am I willing to be broken bread and poured out wine for Him? To be spoilt for this age, for this life, to be spoilt from every standpoint but one – saving as I can disciple men and women to the Lord Jesus Christ. My life as a worker is the way I say “thank you” to God for His unspeakable salvation. Remember it is quite possible for any one of us to be flung out as reprobate silver – “…lest that by any means when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.”

Recently there was a conference at USC to address homelessness, attended by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dr. Ben Carson, and current and former CA governors, mayors, and city council members.

An idea not put forth is to declare any homeless person a ward of the state, and move them to to a site similar to boot camp, where they are housed, clothed, fed, and medically evaluated. What happens next depends upon the individual’s situation.
A few are homeless by choice, loving the Liberty to come and go as they please. They are not a problem, and should be exempted.
Some are just down on their luck and just need to get their feet under them. They should be evaluated to determine their abilities, talents, and experience. That, coupled with job placement, perhaps after additional schooling/training, will get them going; no longer a ward. Graduation will include a loan to cover things like moving costs, 1st and last months rent, work clothes, etc.
Addicts and alcoholics will be treated, then moved to the “down on their luck” group.
The truly incompetent that cannot acquire the skills and discipline to get a job would never graduate, but remain.
All residents would be required to contribute to cooking and cleaning and the ongoing maintenance of the buildings and grounds to the best of their ability.

Some people here have been homeless … living in a cardboard box homeless. Some people know what it’s like to go to a church run shelter and find it’s better to go back to that cardboard box. Some people learned that to get that opportunity for 3 hots and a cot you ONLY have to attend two 15 minute church services at 7 AM and 6 PM. Well then … how do you keep a job? If you had a car you’d live in it. You’re riding the bus. You have to be there for the 7 AM service and you need 10 minutes or so to run to the bus stop/station. If you miss the 7 AM – 7:15 AM – 7:30 AM buses you ain’t never going to make your connections and forget about EVER getting to a job at 8 AM or even 9 AM … let alone 7 or 7:30 AM. Same deal for the 6 PM service. You pretty much have to leave your job at 430 PM to leave time for the run to your bus stop and also leave time to get from one bus stop to another to guarantee you’ll have the time to get off that 2nd bus and run back to the shelter. You could try the Salvation Army which never required you to attend a service. The Salvation Army opened it’s doors daily at 4:30 PM on a 1st come 1st served basis for it’s 50 or so bunks and meals. Only the drunks, druggies and bums who stroll the streets and could get back at 4;30 – 5 PM and get those beds. Some truly ambitious people would hide their cardboard boxes in the woods near their job, cover it over with plastic found in a dumpster and camouflaged with brush. You could shop lift generic pop tarts and rot gut hot dogs in the hope that if you were busted security would see it’s obvious you were starving and pity you. The driver leaned over and opened the passenger door and I felt the warm air drifting out.
I heard him ask, “You mind riding with a pervert?” at the same time as I was lowering my head to look in, and saw that he was naked.
I was too numb to speak, so just closed the door and trudged back to where i had been, and he drove off.
Some time later, a guy in a pickup truck stopped. Turned out he was going right past my destination and some hours later, dropped me off where I needed to be.

In 1981 I was on I-25 about halfway between Albuquerque and Santa Fe headed north to a job in Las Vegas, New Mexico about 6:30 in the AM. My van just died and I pulled onto the shoulder. I pulled a plug wire and saw there was no spark. I then pulled the distributor cap and saw the rotor wasn’t spinning. My ’72 Ford van had an inline 6 cylinder so the distributor was on the driver’s side about floor level … very easy to reach! I pulled the distributor and saw the gear had broke a tooth. I wrapped the distributor in a rag and trudged (When you hitchhike, you “trudge” a lot.) over to the south bound lanes to hitchhike back home to Albuquerque. This was summertime and early in the AM it was already about 85 … blazing sun etc. When I got to the southbound shoulder directly across from my van … exactly where I needed to stand to hitchhike … there … standing upright … a COLD UNOPENED TALLBOY 24 OUNCE BEER!!! A Busch Beer as I remember. I immediately pulled the tab and took a long cool sip. Even back in my beer drinking days I never drank at work or in the morning but under the circumstances, everything in the Universe said I must. The very 1st car to come along was an old 50s Chevy pick up and the guy pulled right over and offered me a ride! I offered to put the beer down and the driver said, “No way!” I finished the beer, he dropped me off. I got home, got on my motorcycle, got my new distributor, and rode back to my van. I installed the distributor, put the motorcycle in the back of the van and continued on to Las Vegas.

At that Zacharias was serving his turn as High Priest in the Temple and he stood the Virgin Mary in the place for maidens, not for married women.

Two very special people were present: Simeon the elder and Anna the daughter of Phanuel. (See tge Holy Gospel According to Saint Luke, Chapter 2.) The Pharisees witnessed this and alerted King Herod, who sent to have Jesus killed.

The Divine Infant, the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph the Betrothed and his son, James, escaped and set out for Egypt under the direction of an angel of God. This day has been celebrated since the very earliest times, but its solemn celebration dates from 544, in the time of the Emperor Justinian.

Today is February 2nd on the traditional Calendar of the Orthodox Christian Church.

      Dismissal Hymn
Rejoice, thou who art full of grace, O Virgin Theotokos, for from thee hath risen the Sun of Righteousness, Christ our God, enlightening those in darkness. Rejoice thou also, O righteous elder, as thou receivest in thine arms the Redeemer of our souls, Who also granteth unto us the Resurrection.

Thou Who didst sanctify the Virgin’s womb by Thy birth, and didst bless Symeon’s hands as was meet, by anticipation didst even now save us, O Christ God. But grant peace in the midst of wars unto Thy commonwealth and strengthen the hierarchs whom Thou hast loved, O only Friend of man.

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.

In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

A prayer for Justice Kavanaugh and Gen. Flynn:

    Prayer to St. Michael

    St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle;
be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
    May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do you, O prince of the heavenly host,
    by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits
who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
