Tuesday June 18th – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

    Light For The Soul

A Christian believer talking to an atheistic evolutionist one time, took his watch out of his pocket, noted the time and put it back in again, saying to his friend: “This is a wonderful watch; never misses a second. I never have to do anything to it, yet it keeps perfect time.”

“What make is it?” asked the evolutionist. “Oh, no make,” was the reply. “Well who manufactured it?” “Oh, no one. It just put itself together somehow.”

“Nonsense!” said the atheist. “A watch can’t just come into existence. Somebody had to manufacture it.”

“That’s true,” replied the Christian, “yet you expect me to believe that this vast universe with its billions of planets and stars, all revolving in perfect order, just came about by itself; that it has no Designer, no Creator, and no one to keep it running. Isn’t that nonsense!”

According to the Bible God holds the pagan world responsible for its idolatry and declares: “They are without excuse” (Rom. 1:20) because all that the heathen witness about God every day calls for their worship and praise and thanksgiving (Rom. 1:20,21). But they have not had this attitude. They have denied and rejected God and, as St. Paul says, they “became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened” (Ver. 21). It was thus that pagan idolatry, the worship of the creation, rather than the Creator (Ver. 25) had its beginning.

All this is very much like what we read in Ephesians 4:17,18 where God exhorts His people not to live like “the Gentiles,” in “the vanity [shallowness] of their mind, having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart.”

Not very complimentary, is it? But it does reflect the condition of the human heart without God and apart from faith in Christ our Savior. It explains why the world, with all its increased technical knowledge is worse off than ever.

How wonderful to know that “God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness,” can give light and joy and blessing to the simplest soul who places his faith in Christ, who died for our sins! (See IICor. 4:3-6; Acts 16:31; ICor. 15:3,4).

Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

Ephesians 4:17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

2 Corinthians 4:3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.
6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

      1 Corinthians 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
      3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

        All good, deplorable.
I wish people understood that there is only one way to go to Hell and only one way to keep from going there.
The only way to go to Hell is UNBELIEF.
The only way to keep from going to Hell is to BELIEVE.
In the Old Testament, all they had to BELIEVE was that Christ was who He said He was, the Son of Living God.
In the New Testament you just BELIEVE in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ for the forgiveness of sins. [1Cor.15:1-4] It is so simple, that it is called “the simplicity that is in Christ” [2 Cor.11:3]. Simple yes, but it’s not written that it’s easy.
A heart’s content ? Only God can judge.

Acts 11:17-18’ “”If then God has given to them the same gift as also to us having believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, how was I able to forbid God?” And having heard these things, they were silent and glorified God, saying, “Then indeed God has given also to the Gentiles repentance unto life.””

Acts 17:30-31 “So indeed God, having overlooked the times of ignorance, now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He set a day in which He is about to judge the world in righteousness by a man whom He appointed, having provided a guarantee to all, having raised Him out from the dead.”

Acts 20:20-21 “how I did not shrink back from declaring to you anything being profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house, earnestly testifying both to the Jewish and to Greeks repentance in God and faith in our Lord Jesus.”

            TMonroe, I get that.
It’s just that ‘repentance’ is of works just as water baptism is.
Perhaps I should have included ‘ by grace, we are saved through faith’ and ‘not of works, lest any man should boast’ Eph2:8,9
And that” not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works” Heb 6:1
I certainly do not want to debate scripture, I do want to share my understanding if it, though.

As an aside, every time I ‘FTA’ I immediately go back to the early-to-mid 70s when everything was turmoil in the Army.

Dissatisfaction was rampant, discipline was frequently non-existent, the pay was miserable (at best) and living conditions sucked. The phrase F*** THE ARMY became widespread among the lower enlisted grades and it wasn’t unusual for a soldier to ewalk into a chowhall or meeting, yell “FTA” and be greeted by a chorus in return of “F*** THE ARMY!”.

Senior NCOs and officers would try and stop it but it was dangerous at times, in those days I knew more than one senior NCO who walked around his duty area armed. Luckily Reagan got elected and things changed took a turn for the better, the 70s now being just a dull bad memory.

At the end of Vietnam and the genesis of the ‘All Volunteer Army’ we had a period where enlistment procedures were somewhat…loose. We had a slug of trash we had to deal with that we couldn’t get rid of until Reagan came in and lowered the boom.

I can remember the Recruiting Command renting school buses, going down to the Job Corps Center, picking up a crowded bus full of potential applicants and mass-administering the ASVAB, hoping that out of a school bus load they could get one or two to pass. At times we suspected the Center was teaching the ASVAB just to get ‘students’ there to pass and get a job. We got some doozies.

But also these arguments often begin with someone either misinterpreting a post or deciding to play “moderator” and making arbitrary assumptions about the poster’s intent. It seems these folks haven’t read the guidelines for posting.

It’s up to the hosts to moderate. If enough people complain politely via email and be specific as to where the inappropriate posts are located, the moderators may decide to take action.

Bigger is better, right? Well, maybe not. Those of us who have been computing since the early days remember when we gleefully unboxed our brand new 14″ CRT monitor. And when the 15″ monitors came out, those of us who could paid the premium price for one of those.
Then came the LCD age, and it was off to the races. First it was the 19″, then for a long time I’ve been using a 24″ TV as my monitor. Nothing wrong with it, but I wanted more. So last weekend, just as an experiment, I took the 40″ TV out of my living room and plopped it down on my desk.
    Um, yeah. Too much.
(Aside from Memory Lane: “Don’t sit so close to the TV! It’ll burn out your eyes!” My Dad actually laid down a masking tape line on the floor and forbade us kids from sitting any closer than that.)
There is a finite number of pixels in any given image. When those pixels have to cover such a large tract of real estate, the images become grainy, and the text looks awful, even with my video settings cranked up to maximum.
I don’t know how a 32″ would perform, and I’m not sure if there’s a TV out there between 24″ and 32″. So my advice is, if you need more monitor, don’t get a giant one. Instead, get a second monitor of the same size, preferably the same model. Most computers today can handle multiple monitors without any fuss or bother.

“And Peter…walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid.” Matthew xiv. 29-30

The wind was actually boisterous, the waves were actually high, but Peter did not see them at first. He did not reckon with them, he simply recognized his Lord and stepped out in recognition of Him, and walked on the water. Then he began to reckon with the actual things, and down he went instantly. Why could not our Lord have enabled him to walk at the bottom of the waves as well as on the top of them? Neither could be done saving by recognition of the Lord Jesus.

We step right out on God over some things, then self-consideration enters in and down we go. If you are recognizing your Lord, you have no business with where He engineers your circumstances. The actual things are, but immediately you look at them you are overwhelmed, you cannot recognize Jesus, and the rebuke comes: “Wherefore didst thou doubt?” Let actual circumstances be what they may, keep recognizing Jesus, maintain complete reliance on Him.

If you debate for a second when God has spoken, it is all up. Never begin to say – “Well, I wonder if He did speak?” Be reckless immediately, fling it all out on Him. You do not know when His voice will come, but whenever the realization of God comes in the faintest way imaginable, recklessly abandon. It is only by abandon that you recognize Him. You will only realize His voice more clearly by recklessness.

Many questions regarding these new ‘currencies’, like bitcoin and the new one that Facebook is debuting which apparently has backing from the major credit card companies:

    1. If these are really a new type of currency, how does the U.S. Secret Service, which has jurisdiction over protecting the value and worth of our nation’s currency, deal with these online currencies as to how they might affect the valuation of the U.S. dollar?

    2. Are these really currencies? If so – this would be the first time entities that are not nations are creating a currency, basically out of thin air, or ‘their word that it has value’ –
    a) if so, do individuals the world over have a right to know exactly who these currency creators are and
    b) by what authority do online entities, with no accountability but to themselves, have a right to create a currency not beholden to a national identity

    3. What does the World Bank or international monetary fund have to say about these online currencies – or

    4. Are these online currencies a set up, something that whoever is the puppet-master for the vaunted one world government, a mere tool that once in place the clowns can step out from behind their current and declare only these fiat currencies will be acknowledged for all business transactions replacing national currencies?

Are governments even concerned with these made-up-from-thin-air currencies?

I would think that the Secret Service would be all over this situation, transparency, accountability notwithstanding, it would seem like more is at play with the arrogance of an online platform making up their own currency as if they nations unto themselves.

I’ll do my best with my limited understanding to answer….

      1. I don’t think they can, and that is the point of crypto. Or at least, it was one of the original points. Cryptos ‘get the GOVERNMENT out of the CURRENCY business.’ Definitely not the case with Zuckerface, who is an antichrist to his toes.

      2. They’re currencies insofar as they’re being used for remuneration for services….and other things, too, I suppose. As to part B of your question – I recall some cities were doing LOCAL currencies a while back, so there may be some legal thing that allows it.

      3. I don’t think those who use cryptos much care what IMF or WB says about it – again, that was a big driver of their creation: taking currency out of the hands of the gov’t.

      4. Actually, I’ve always viewed cryptos as a *stumbling stone* to antichrist/oneworldgov’t.

“are gov’ts concerned?” Oh yes, the US gov’t has been very VERY concerned precisely because cryptos are outside their control. I read some time back that some governments are looking at crypto as a way to direct trade.

Volker, it did an excellent dive back into the beginning of currency, tribal up to national currencies, and how gold, and for a time silver, became the go-to as far as determining valuation of what the different nation’s currencies would be worth when it came to them doing trade amongst each other, and how this worked toward stabilizing much of civilization.

To me these crypto-currencies are another bubble that, when it bursts, a lot of people are going to be left holding the proverbial bag – and not know who to blame other than their individual governments for not protecting them – which, I believe, is the point behind this push to create a pretend currency. Which, is just a personal opinion.

This is where I wonder, and I’m going to assume they are on it, that the Secret Service would be ahead of this, as it is one of their main tasks, established when Lincoln was President, not so much as to protect the sitting President, but to protect the value of the nation’s bank notes, in order that the U.S. could enter into debt to secure the funding needed to not only prosecute that war but also, because up until that war there were, for many states, separate State currencies and Lincoln’s term ended that practice completely, as an additional way of binding the different States together.

Given my understanding of that part of history, and the basic understanding that these anarchists, these social justice folks who think they are going to create their utopian world via all things internet, think that creating their own currency will give them the standing to say they are above any nations laws. They will be in for a very rude awakening. But again, just a working opinion because I don’t know who is behind the whole crytpo-currency world.

Thank you for adding to my working understanding.

There is a very sassy old joke – I won’t retell it, but the punch line is that the proffered ‘gettin smart pills’ tasted an awful lot like rabbit sh*t. And the reply – ‘Now you’re getting smarter!’
I guess the Dems haven’t had enough ‘gettin smart pills yet’

  38. Senate Judiciary Committee just concluded the Congressional Term Limits hearing. I look forward to CTH input. Key to the discourse was that all of the 14 sponsors of the bill were elected after 2010. NO Democrat officials sponsored the bill. Many states have already signed up for a Convention of States to address the issue of Term limits for various positions in DC, including Congress. I personally support only term limiting legislators in a convention of states.

    What’s wrong with…well…everything.

The New Orleans pols hired an out-of-state firm to come here and review the circumstances surrounding arrested but not yet arraigned perps and recommend bail. It’s supposed to speed up the magistrate process by having a reviewed package and the judge can just take their recommendation for bail/no bail.

Yesterday we had two thugs from Cincinnati who were in town (as if we ain’t got enuff of our own) and they decided to stop by a local pharmacy to pick up some stuff. They tied up the clerk, dragged him to the back of the store and started filling a trash bag with drugs from the safe. As they ran out of the store they ran into the police who were waiting for them – a gunfight ensued. One police officer was hit as were both perps, and the lot was covered with shell casings.

Pretrial services got the case and after reviewing the rather lengthy and detailed arrest/incident reports decided that one of the perps should get a Level One recommendation for bail, the lowest security rating possible, a Level that many perps can receive no-bail release. Needless to say the judge, who at least had seen the local news, the DA’s office and the arresting officers objected and both perps, still in the hospital, received bails of over $1-million. They ain’t going nowhere.

And here we are, our tax $$$ go to hiring out-of-state liberal ‘experts’ who appear to use ouiji boards or something other than common sense. This isn’t the only example of their screwing up, just the most recent and egregious one. And the city pols are silent.

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.

In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

A prayer for Justice Kavanaugh and Col. Flynn:

    Prayer to St. Michael

    St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle;
be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
    May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do you, O prince of the heavenly host,
    by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits
who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.

Arresting Islamic terrorists who carry out attacks abroad and bringing them to trial was a signature policy of the Obama years.
