Friday January 18th – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

    The Law Misunderstood

There are three misconceptions that most people entertain about the law of God and its Ten Commandments:

    1. Most people have a vague notion that the law always was in existence and that it must have been given to the first man, Adam, or soon after. Actually, God gave the law to Moses for Israel about 1500 B.C., after about 2500 years of human history had elapsed (John 1:17). So mankind lived on earth for about 2500 years without the law or the Ten Commandments.

    2. Most people suppose that the law and the Ten Commandments were given to mankind in general, while, in fact, it was given to Israel alone (Deuteronomy 5:2,3).

    3. Most people suppose that the law and the Ten Commandments were given to help us to do right. Even some clergymen teach this, although the Bible clearly teaches that they were given to show us that we are guilty sinners.
It is true that the law, while given to Israel, also shows the Gentile that he is a sinner. This is why Romans 3:19 says:

“Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may be brought in guilty before God.”

But most important of all: Few people realize that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins to deliver us from the just condemnation of the law. This is taught in the following Scriptures:

“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us…” (Gal.3:13).

“For God hath made Him to be sin for us, [Christ] who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” (IICor.5:21).

“For sin shall not have dominion over you; for ye are NOT UNDER THE LAW, BUT UNDER GRACE” (Rom.6:14).

    By Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

Deuteronomy 5:2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
3 The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.

Romans 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

Galatians 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

2Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Beautiful reminder. Although the history of humans is much longer “without the law” or with inklings or preparations for “the law.” “God gave the law to Moses for Israel about 1500 B.C., after about 2500 years of human history had elapsed (John 1:17).”

It is hard to keep up but I think the first modern human remains have been found in Israel maybe 167,000 years ago. Then follow the major and minor migrations through ancient DNA discoveries, many with violence – lawless, hungry for others’ possessions, especially land,(s) — and we see the need for “the law.”

Our President is engaged with us and for us to reinstate “the law” as it has been developed through the American Revolution and the institution of a Constitutional Republic. “The law” revised for today. Grace would be the next step.

Just an update : We’re increasingly convinced insurance companies are the bastion of frauds ! Our own insurance company’s “adjuster ” is just that, intent upon ‘adjusting our premium’ upward ! In an accident where we were not at fault, he’s trying to get us to agree to putting in a “uninsured motorist ” claim ; when we had already given his boss the right claim number and insured’s information ! Then their ” adjuster” came and examined our vehicle – except he didn’t – that we can determine as we were both home , the vehicle locked and he didn’t toot his horm or knock on the door to gain access. Instead he took our word as to mileage, condition, features and equipment by phone a day later ! We have a rental car they’re paying ( hopefully ) for so we do have a road-worthy safe vehicle. What should be a simple case, easily resolved , is turning into a nightmare !

    • Nor can they forecast tomorrow’s weather with an accuracy above 50%.
I could probably do better flipping a coin.

      Oh, and changing the forecast to rain WHILE it is raining….IS CHEATING….unless you are a _ _ _ _ _ _ _.

My “Weather Rock” has a 100% accuracy.
      If it’s wet, it’s raining.
      If it’s white, it’s snowing.
If I can see its shadow, it’s sunny
      If I can’t see it, it’s foggy
If It is no longer there, there’s a tornado…..

In Washington state, the weather ‘forecast’ is hilarious in November and March, About a 10% accuracy. It gives them fits. The weather is so predictable the rest of the year, though, they do OK. ‘Rain showers’ is safe eight months of the year, ‘sunny and mild’ the last two, that would be July and August.
It’s hilarious watching them claim to have been accurate though, I used to really watch this one guy, Jeff Renner, try to claim how accurate he was forecasting. Up here you watch the weather, then go out and make your best guess.

Statement from the Catholic Bishops of NYS on Abortion Expansion

Words are insufficient to describe the profound sadness we feel at the contemplated passage of New York State’s new proposed abortion policy. We mourn the unborn infants who will lose their lives, and the many mothers and fathers who will suffer remorse and heartbreak as a result.

The so-called “Reproductive Health Act” will expand our state’s already radically permissive law, by empowering more health practitioners to provide abortion and removing all state restrictions on late-term procedures. With an abortion rate that is already double the national average, New York law is moving in the wrong direction.

    Robbing the Body of Christ
    JANUARY 18, 2019

    1 Corinthians 12:14-21
14 For the body is not one member, but many. 15 If the foot says, Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear says, Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired. 19 If they were all one member, where would the body be? 20 But now there are many members, but one body. 21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you”; or again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.”

Every day, you get out of bed, put on clothes, and walk to the kitchen to eat breakfast. You maybe watch the news or check your email, and a few minutes later, you drive to work at 60 miles per hour on a road where other vehicles can pass by within feet. In the first hour or so that you’re awake, your body completes thousands of complex tasks that are so routine they go unnoticed. We hardly even think about them.

Our physical frame is a creation of remarkable beauty and intricacy. And while certain parts seem more attractive than others, all are useful. The body’s interdependent nature—that is, the way the different parts rely on one another to perform properly—is an apt metaphor for a Christ-centered church. When believers use their gifts and talents to operate and depend on each other, the whole body functions properly to the glory of God.

However, many people in church today feel insignificant. Upon seeing the successful work of others, they decide they’re not really needed or assume they haven’t got the “right” talents to make a worthwhile contribution. Those are lies from the devil. When his misguidance succeeds—which is all too often—one more Christian backs away in hopes that someone else will do the Lord’s work.

Hanging back instead of seeking a place to serve is unfair to the congregation, because your unique contribution is integral to the unity of God’s church. Your role might not be center stage, but it is vital to Jesus Christ and to His body on earth.

I love it when a plan comes together.

How Pelosi would ever expect to have any commercial travel plans to a war zone remain secret is beyond me, I’d expect ISIS and the Taliban would know long before she has custom made, patent leather boots-on-ground. Too bad she won’t bring Chuckie with her, they could both meet with the latest killers of US troops and give them tips from the Rat’s long experience in the same. “This, then, is the Epiphany (revelation) of the Holy Trinity, otherwise known as Theophany which literally means a “revelation of God” in Greek (Θεοφάνεια; the Russian is Богоявление and means the same).

The paradox that Jesus Christ might be revealed as God through an act of submittal to a mere man, John, is shown well in the Icon. Though John is baptizing Christ, it is the former who is shown bent over in reverence to the latter. In other icons, John is shown with his face turned toward heaven and beholding the miracle of the Theophany; either way, despite being the baptizer, he is not central to the scene. Near to John is a tree with an axe laid at the root, recalling John’s own preaching to those who came to him: “And now also the ax is laid to the root of the trees: therefore every tree which brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.” (Matt 3:10). Present in the icon, this shows that whilst the Baptizer must now “decrease so Christ may increase”, John’s teachings and role are not done away with now the Holy Trinity has been revealed. On the opposite bank to John the Baptist, angels wait invisibly to receive the newly baptized Christ and clothe Him. And so, on the left is the forerunner of Christ, John, with his sermon of repentance represented by the tree and axe; on the right, the angels wait with reverence to accept the newly revealed Son of God. In the middle – the moment of revelation itself.”
