Southerners have the best short-cut words! At Valdosta State, there was a lady we knew as ‘Miss Chovine’ who worked in the student center. [She was also a beloved member of my Mama and Aunt’s ladies Sunday School class, populated with such sweet people as Miss Rena Mae who greeted everyone so enthusiastically with one long inimitable syllable of delight that we always knew when she arrived for their socials at our house.]

When you sat at the counter in the VSC student center, Miss Chovine would come up and say, “Chaunt?” and you would place your order. Then she’d say, “Welce chaunt?” (Translation: 1) What do you want? 2) What else do you want?)

Oh I miss those days! My freshman year was the year JFK was assassinated in November.

I probably shouldn’t mention it here but this type of video perpetuates the redneck stereotypical Trump voter. Both untrue and doesn’t move the ball for us. Funny for our little group but doesn’t convert anyone and turns lots of people off. Pretty funny though.

    • RedBallExpress says:

Very valid observation but nothing a sledge hammer wouldn’t fix.

Maybe so, but there’s a certain wisdom in redneckiness that the basic intellectual snob misses. Appalachian citizens are descendants of the original Scots and Irish settlers of that region and are the recipients of generations of passed-down knowledge. They were instrumental in the Revolutionary War due to their back-of-the-hand knowledge of the backwoods. There’s also a certain tendency to be able to fix, jerry-rig, and invent things that would stymie others. Rednecks/hillbillies are survivors with steely resolve, and a love of God, family, and country. So what if we don’t always use “proper” speech and have weird accents? Let that mean they will underestimate us to their peril.

Agreed. As we always would say in east Tennessee — a country boy will survive. I once saw a fellow lose the car bridge over his creek in a bad “gully washer” one spring. He cut down this huge oak tree and used it to get his car on the right side of the road by driving on it. Fascinating!

Oh, and we Scots-Irish can handle being made fun of. We do it ourselves all the time. We don’t need a safe space nor speech codes to protect us.

the Revolution was fought somewhat differently in the North and South with both using cover to fight from but the southern forces were vastly outnumbered so fought a more pure guerrilla war even frustrating the British so much in the Carolinas that Cornwallis retreated from there to Yorktown to escape them and was pinned by Washington’s army and the French fleet

Bob, I suppose if we all spoke like we were educated at “Hahvahd” we would move the ball, convert everyone and turn lots of people on? Somehow, I’m skeptical…

And Merry Christmas as well 🙂

    • Relax Bob, the ball is moving forward despite any concern for political correctness… the fake liberals are going to continue being fake liberals no matter what happens, & no one is going to change to suit them. Speed up some Southern drawl and whaddya git? Quite proper British speak, actually… yep.

That said, “fit ain’t broke don’fixit”.

How does the use of “idnit” establish a brother in arms? I first used it 25 years ago. How does it link to this discussion?

Joe Dan Gorman graduated high school in 1979 (a young pup still) in Hazard, KY. That’s where he gets that good old boy southern accent. Down further south, he might be called Bubba or even BayBubba (baby brother) by his family and friends, or called by his initials ‘J.D.’

Back in the mid 60s we used to see front license plates that said “I’ve been to Hazard….
and lived”. The town had quite the reputation back when.

Possibly because Perry is next to Harlan County, the setting for the series ‘Justified’.
I’m Tennessee born and raised, moved to Kentucky in 2007…so I guess I have a double speech impediment!! 🙂

Great humor, great music, but also right on when it comes to numerous important issues like “fake news”.

I find the music most intriguing. This guy has fantastic taste. At 14:43 there’s a Bulgarian folk song. I’m trying to figure out which one it is because I suspect the song title or content is relevant to the topic. 🙂

5:44, “No Quarter” by Led Zeppelin. Excellent. 🙂 I feel like identifying every piece of music in this video, they’re all great. (By the way, sometimes I think that Led Zeppelin was the greatest rock band that ever existed.)

Here’s the Bulgarian song. Aj Chinko Pilja Chereno. I don’t know what it means. Anyone speak Bulgarian or Russian? Another spelling is Ay Chinko Pilia Chereno.

Years ago, we were driving from Minnesota to San Diego and we made it to some little town in Arkansas before we had to stop for the night.

We pulled into a motel and went into the office to get a room. The lady behind the desk asked “Do you have any pay-ets?”. My husband said “I’m sorry, what did you say?” and again, she asked “Do you have any pay-ets?”.

My husband then looked at me for help and I shrugged and said I don’t know either. He then asked her “Is that some kind of coupon or something?”. Now the lady seemed irritated and she snapped back “No! Pay-ets, you know……P.E.T.S. — Do you have any PAY-ETS?”

We’ll, I’m telling you, I don’t know if it was because we were so tired from all that driving we did or what, but we looked at each other and laughed so loud and for so long that I almost had an accident. That was the funniest thing I had ever heard. We still talk about it to this very day!
