Key paragraph: “Cruz himself purports to embrace originalism as the correct view of the Constitution. To be faithful to his understanding of what the Constitution means, the senator may have to disqualify himself.”

I have been saying this for months that Cruz’s Canadian birth would be a problem. TOO What irks me the most is all the lies from Cruz on the issue, especially in regards to his dual citizenship! In 2013 when the media asked Cruz about his dual citizenship Cruz acted surprised and denied having dual citizenship or any knowledge of dual citizenship. Later the media showed Cruz proof so he said he would take care of it. At first I figured that really made Cruz look really ignorant for not knowing.
However it seems that Cruz used to brag to his College buddies about his dual citizenship, asking if it would prevent him from being president. Looks like Cruz knew all along and has been playing a game with his supporters and America.
If you all don’t realize it but it takes around two year or more s in courts to undo dual citizenship. Hell Cruz might still be a Canadian American. Who can trust Cruz on this issue anymore? Just think about it guys while Cruz was in the US senate he could have held a Canadian office too, H3LL he might still be able to hold a Canadian office.
Understand this; no one is saying Cruz had a Canadian passport and everyone agrees that Cruz’s mother Eleanor Elizabeth (Darragh) Wilson was born in America.
The question now is the clear clarification of the Native Born Law which only SCOTUS can do. Does one have to be born on US soil like the Obama people were using when fighting to prove Obama was born in Hawaii and not Kenya?
For every Constitutional expert that says Cruz is eligible, there are just as many Constitutional experts that say Cruz is not eligible. The ones that say that Cruz is ineligible say he has to be born on US soil.
Cruz should have cleared all this up long ago including his dual citizenship. With less than 10 months until the general election it’s a bit late for Cruz to be playing with SCOTUS for a clarification of the Native born law.

Yes, agree with you and USA Patriot. He can easily be proven NOT to be a “consistent Conservative”. He has a long list of flip flopping votes on important issues plus all his donors are Neocon Globalists. Good grief. How much does it take? And I say that as a “very” social Conservative Christian (and Texan). It’s just facts that must be faced. This whole natural born thing is also full of suspicions. His records are sealed. Just as you say, he has long known about his dual citizenship but when asked in 2013 when running for Senator, he acted (note “acted”) surprised saying he didn’t know that. What??? How could you not know that anyway if you are running for these high offices and wanted to since his youth? It’s ridiculous. I also blame the Tea Party about their suspicious “vetting”. Something is fishy there as well.
It’s also interesting to know he was the President of the Drama Club in school……….

Its too late for SCOTUS. If Cruz is earnest he would step down support Trump.
Then he should get SCOTUS to clarify the law. If law is clarified in Cruz’s favor then he should run. This is not the time to run with issues like this. Our country has too much to lose.

kinthennorthwest….who has standing to take it to SCOTUS? The candidates? I know “we the people” don’t because it was tried in 2008 and we lost. If it is the candidates, then who among them would topple the apple cart?

        • kinthenorthwest says:

The law needs to be totally clarified.
If it had been proven that Obama had been not been born on US soil bu born in Kenya then Obama would have been ineligible.
Now it seems that the Cruz people are saying that as long as someone has one American parent they can be born anyplace in world and be president.
Now I don’t trust Cruz at all and feel he is trying to twist our constitution.

Trump is prescient. He saw long before Cruz did that no one could win Iowa without supporting ethanol. That led to Ted having to flip-flop. Problem for Cruz is if he follows Trump’s solution, Cruz looks like a loser and Trump looks like a leader.

Was wondering when the MSM would get around to asking the Turtle. Besides the fact Cruz is HATED for being a grandstander, his circumstances aren’t anywhere near the same as McCains. For those cleaving to Vattel, like myself, it did cause discomfort regarding McCain’s eligibility, but on balance, I was OK with him: 2 US citizen parents, in the service of the US government, stationed in a US Territory.

Cruz: 1 US citizen parent, questions as to that parents status at time of Cruz’s birth, born in foreign country. There is NO WAY I can consider him a ‘Natural Born Citizen’ per my understanding of the Constitution, Vattel, and intent…

Not a ‘hater’ or whatever else some might say. I’ve been concerned about a Cruz run prior to his announcement, others have been, too.

He and Levin’s ‘nothing to see, move along’ is horrible. It belittles those worried about a legitimate issue, and show both men to be above Constitutional limitations. Which is doubly worse as both claim to be originalists.

  6. Rubio’s eligibility needs to be questioned as well. Natural Born does not mean that you are born on US soil to two parents that became citizens later after birth.

Can’t you just hear Trump expounding on this! His most recognized skill “You’re Fired!” will play well in cleaning up this “mess” of a department of the U. S. Government.

Two top administrators at the Department of Veterans’ Affairs health system in Phoenix, Arizona, who were suspended following revelations of fake wait lists and delayed patient care will return to agency jobs Monday.

Robinson and Curry were placed on paid leave and given termination notices in May 2014. During their suspensions, they have been given hundreds of thousands of dollars in pay and benefits.

Both administrators were the subject of VA inquiries and hearings, which have been subject to delays and yielded contradictory findings.

An internal probe reported by the Washington Post concluded that Robinson retaliated against a whistle blower who reported mismanagement and poor care at the Phoenix hospital.

A veterans group described the latest development as further evidence that the VA under Secretary Robert McDonald is not serious about holding employees accountable for misconduct.

“By allowing Robinson and Curry to return to work despite their intimate involvement in the wait list scandal that likely cost dozens of veterans their lives–and Robinson’s documented retaliation against whistle blowers–VA leaders are letting the American people know that their priority is protecting corrupt government bureaucrats instead of seeking to better serve our veterans,” Concerned Veterans for America legislative and political director Dan Caldwell said in a statement Friday.

“If Secretary McDonald and the top leadership at the VA do not have the courage, or competence, to properly fire employees like Curry and Robinson who engage in misconduct that puts lives at risk, then they have no business managing an agency that millions of veterans rely on for their critical health care needs. The stakes for our veterans are simply too high.”

Happy Times here at Bluto’s Ranch & Mountain. Family in for a visit last week and what was all the talk about the first day? Trump’s Christmas Cards!!! Mom was so happy to see that Trump sent Christmas cards to us…..and two of them! One for Mrs. Bluto too! (We both took the time to send our own donations a few months ago). Mrs. Bluto refuses to open hers, and is saving it for posterity. Mom exclaims, “It might be worth something someday!” Oh dear. Too much Fun!

I have no doubt about it, Trump is in this to win it. Seeing the reaction to just a little thing like a Christmas card from him AND the fact it actually uses the word “Christmas” was quite interesting to me. It’s like Trump is manufacturing enthusiasm & excitement out of thin air. He’s brilliant…and FUN!

And what continuing thread of conversation weaved it’s way thru our visit over the days? Trump. Then I sat back and envisioned the same thing happening all over the country. Families gathering together and sharing their Trump Christmas Card, like a trophy, with each other. And the ones who didn’t get a card are all a bit envious, and curious as to how they came to get a card from The Donald. So much fun!!! I love him! He’s smart, a furious hard worker, AND he’s FUN. How in the world can ya beat that??? 😀 😀

Since we’re on the topic of natural born citizen being one of the requirements for president or VP, I hope Trump knows that his three oldest children wouldn’t qualify because their mother didn’t become a U.S. until 1988 well after they were born. I know Trump’s fourth oldest, Tiffany Trump, is a natural born citizen because her mother was born in Georgia. I’m not sure about his youngest one, Barron. He was born the same year Melania became a U.S. citizen (2006), but I don’t know if she became a U.S. citizen before or after he was born. If he was born before she became naturalized, then Trump would only have one kid who is a natural born citizen.

Rand Paul gave Trump a gift today on Face the Nation. Rand Paul and his dad are considered Constitutional experts. I would think that would mean something in Iowa.

Rand questioned whether Cruz was eligible to run for president and said the Supreme Court should decide the issue. Rand said that it would be “extraordinary” for a president to be born outside the United States. He said, if Cruz were to win, it would be the first time. I think a lot of people assume the early presidents were born in England. This is not the case.

I personally think Rand Paul would balance out Trump nicely as a VP pick. Of course, I love Ron Paul, but Rand may be improving.

I’ve been a lurker here for quite a while; have become addicted, I think! This is my first post because I normally enter the Treehouse via my Kindle every evening, but the Kindle keyboard makes typing more than a sentence or two difficult. Desktop computer to the rescue.

I want to respond to comments I read here last night re: Cruz’s parents being on a voter list in Canada. (I’m no Cruz fan; Trump all the way: just want to clarify this for accurate information.) I lived in Ontario for 15 years beginning in 1975, around the same era when Cruz’s
parents were in Canada. The way those “voter lists” worked was this: “Enumerators” — somewhat like U.S. Census workers — would go, on behalf of the Canadian federal government, through essentially every neighborhood in every province to make sure people were signed up to vote if they were citizens. The enumerator knocked on your door and came with a prepared list containing the names of all the residents of every house on that street/in that neighborhood that the government knew of. Not everybody at each address on the lists were citizens; the lists were compiled, first of all, consisting of known residents at that given address. The enumerator would find out then if his/her list was correct, who actually lived there, and he/she was supposed to ask whether each resident was a citizen or not. If so, you were then marked eligible to vote. In my experience in Ontario, they always did ask that question. I recall thinking, in fact, the first time I answered the door when an enumerator came, “It would be easy to lie about whether you’re a citizen” if you wanted to vote and weren’t a citizen. It momentarily crossed my mind that I could have told the person I was a Canadian so I could have voted in local and provincial elections. I wouldn’t have done that, of course, and very few people at the time would have. It just wasn’t something decent people did. Anyway, what I’m saying is: the fact that Cruz’s parents were on an enumerator’s list for voting isn’t proof that they(or his mother) had taken Canadian citizenship. It should also be noted that applying for citizenship required a minimum of five year’s residence in Canada.
