The reported demand letter that is still making the rounds is suspect. This gentleman’s post is not shown on his Facebook page. The amount due does not even come close to the shared responsibility payments amount for 2014:
For 2014 taxpayers without insurance – including those who lacked coverage for more than two consecutive months – will be required to pay a penalty of $95 per adult and $47.50 per child up to a maximum of $285, or 1 percent of household income, whichever is higher.
In addition, these shared responsibility payments are only collected from any refunds that the taxpayer has coming. The IRS has no authority to file liens for these shared responsibility payments against folks that don’t pay them. The non payed amounts get carried forward with interest until such time there is a refund due the taxpayer.
