Friday Open Thread – December 28th

Tomb of the Unknown ChristmasOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

HAVANA, Dec 27 (Reuters) – Cuba’s drive to slash state payrolls and spur private-sector growth picked up surprising steam in 2012 as President Raul Castro moved ahead with reforms to the Soviet-style economy, according to figures unveiled recently with little hoopla.

The number of private or “non state” workers rose 23 percent in 2012, while state sector employment dropped 5.7 percent, according to a report from Economy Minister Adel Yzquierdo Rodriguez.

Maybe we could do a reverse Mariel boat lift and all move to Cuba? …and we could promise ahead of time that we would be careful not to all stand on one side of the island, so’s not to tip it over.

Good morning! Have to work today…… Wish the Christmas holiday break could continue. Lots of snow; since I left my car out of the garage, I’ll have to clear it before I can go anywhere this morning. Have a great day, all.

The way it looks to me is that the Feds are taxing and spending without representation. Seems like the people who will have to pay for all this mess have no say. I am talking about the young. Under 18 and the future as of yet unborn. They are borrowing now to pay off the voters and shifting the payback 20 years down the road. They have been doing this since the Great Society was created back in the early 60’s.

    • Sharon says:

Which reminds me of the one-liner in the Reader’s Digest (clear back in the 50’s as I recall):

If Patrick Henry didn’t like taxation without representation, he should see it with representation.

And good ol’ Feinstein, registering and fingerprinting gun owners…

Listening to the news is so enlightening each morning. I just heard that 7th grade girls who are not proficient readers are 20% more likely to get pregnant than their literate peers. Just wish they’d interview one of these Einstein’s to axe ’em how that makes them feel. 🙄

  8. Paige Cohen says:

A BP gas station was robbed this morning in Montrose NY. The gas station is included in the Journal News criminal menu – interactive map of pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. I’d say that the gas station has a cause of action. If not for the reckless compilation of public data serving no public good the station would not be seen as a soft target and vulnerable to robbery.

Maybe Feinstein should address the Chicago gun issue & murder rate before she starts dictating to the rest of the country.

Chomsky and Ellsworth have a pending lawsuit to block detention of citizens w/o due process as provided for by zero and the decipticons in a defense bill. District court granted injunction and trial court stayed pending appeal. Has that been covered here?

These people make me want to puke.
Big data might have stopped the massacres in Newtown, Aurora, and Oak Creek. But it didn’t, because there is no national database of gun owners, and no national record-keeping of firearm and ammunition purchases. Most states don’t even require a license to buy or keep a gun.

That’s a tragedy, because combining simple math and the power of crowds could give us the tools we need to red flag potential killers even without new restrictions on the guns anyone can buy. Privacy advocates may hate the idea, but an open national database of ammunition and gun purchases may be what America needs if we’re ever going to get our mass shooting problem under control.

  15. Sharon says:

The Christian tradition of defying government commands to do something wrong goes back to the very birth of Christianity. When the apostles were ordered not to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with anyone, the Book of Acts records: “Peter and the other apostles replied: ‘We must obey God rather than men! The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead—whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree.’”

Eleven of the twelve apostles—including Peter—would lose their lives for the sake of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ; only the apostle John died of old age. They were determined to obey God’s will at all costs.

This issue of civil disobedience is never to be undertaken lightly. The Bible teaches Christians to submit to all legitimate governmental authority (e.g., Romans 13:1), and so a person can only disobey the government when there is no other way to obey God.

The entire article appears to be very well reasoned and touches on principles of thinking that are basic to decision-making for those who are thinking about “civil disobedience.” It clarifies, I’m thinking, that civil disobedience (for the Christian) cannot be a stand alone thing ( that I do just because I disagree with the government). Defiance of government needs to be in the context that not doing so would cause me to disobey God, against my will.

Package Alert!. I just heard the word “Package” on TV. When they start up with the P word run for the hills and hide your wallet. McConnell and Reid are working on a “Package.” Somehow I always thought spending came out of the House. Ahhh but that was in the old country.

…and for those who are saying, “WHAAA??? Sharon???? A marguerita?…..triple??

I know, I know. Sometimes a body just has to break their own general principles. (And it is purty….)
