China’s Harbin International Ice Festival began in 1963, but was interrupted for a number of years during the Cultural Revolution. The festival resumed again in 1985. The festival opened this year on January 5th, and will continue through February. There are snow sculptures longer than two football fields and ice palaces, ice statues, and ice monuments up to 160 feet high. The technology ranges from modern use of lasers to the traditional ice lanterns. Computer controlled LED lighting gives stunning control of changing displays of color. Many of the displays, like the replica of the Great Wall of China feature a built in slide for people to zoom along on.
