Alfred, Lord Tennyson wrote “In the spring, a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.”
How did you meet your true love? Was it a knock your socks off moment, or a gradual wakening of feelings for someone you knew for awhile? Did you fall in love at first sight, or did you really not like them at first? Will you tell your children and grandchildren your story? It would be so wonderful to hear how you met your partner, but it would also be great to hear from those of you who have older stories to tell. Does anyone have any tales of how Grandma and Grandpa met, and she waited while he was gone to war, or how their parents eloped and lived happily ever after? It sure would be interesting to get some male points of view here, so chime in guys.
In order to peak your interest, here are a few stories to start us off.
Napoleon, a great war hero, was in demand at all the best parties in Paris, and it is likely that he met Josephine (her real name was Rose) at one of these encounters in 1795. Jacqueline Kennedy met John F. Kennedy at a dinner party in 1951. Martha met George at a cotillion in Williamsburg. Jacob met Rachel at a well and watered her flock. Scarlett met Rhett in the Library at Twelve Oaks.
I have a family story to share. In the late 1800’s, a great uncle of mine was a bachelor farmer in Kansas. He and his mother had assumed responsibility for running the farm when his father died. He was 13 years old at the time, the eldest boy in the family. His oldest sister was left in charge of the house and the younger children. One day when he was working in the fields, he announced to his brother (my grandfather) that he was going to find a wife. He left the fields, and the farm, returning later that day with a wife in tow. He left her at the farm house with his mother, and returned to the field. Romantic devil wasn’t he?
Thanks to G8rMom7 for having such a great idea. Our strengths come from our values, and we celebrate our families, the foundation of society, the foundation of life.
