**Update – Sun Nov 23 12:00h **
Leon County Sheriff’s Department has released the names of the Deputy who was slain as well as the shooter who set the home on fire to ambush Emergency responders.
3722CaracasCtDeputy Christopher Smith, 47,  was shot multiple times and died during a battle with an armed gunman Saturday morning, Lt. James McQuaig, Public Spokesperson for the Leon County Sheriff’s Office stated at a 12 noon news conference.
McQuaig said Smith was “a loving Christian man who loved his wife and his children most of all.”
The shooter has been identified by 53-year-old Curtis Wade Holley. Law enforcement states Holley was armed with a .40 caliber handgun and had a history of making anti-government statements.  They believe his intent was to harm as many Law Enforcement agents as possible.
Officials said Holley acted alone and no one was found in the burned-down house.

The case is under investigation. It will be presented to a Leon County grand jury at the end of the investigation, said Assistant State Attorney Jack Campbell.

HEARTBREAKING TRAGEDY IN TALLAHASSEE TONIGHT …
**UPDATE – 21:00 H**
The slain gunman (still unidentified) had a history of making threats to police.  Tragically, his history was not known to the responding officer, because the dispatcher logged the address of the person who called in the fire, NOT the address of the “incident” ….
AP: A man who had made previous threats against police set his house on fire Saturday and ambushed the first sheriff’s deputy who responded, fatally shooting the deputy and wounding another before he was killed by a police officer who lives nearby, a law enforcement official said.
The man’s name and address had been entered into a law enforcement computer system because of previous threats, but the 911 dispatcher who entered the fire call put in the address of a neighbor who reported the blaze, so the alert wasn’t activated and the Leon County deputy who responded first had no warning, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to release the information.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A man set his house on fire and then fatally shot a sheriff’s deputy and wounded another Saturday when they responded to the scene, before he was shot to death by other law enforcement officers, authorities said.
tallahasseesheriffDeputies and firefighters responded to the blaze about 10:15 a.m. As the first deputy approached the house, he was fatally shot. The gunman picked up the deputy’s gun, walked down the street and used it to shoot a second deputy before he was killed, Lt. James McQuaig of the Leon County Sheriff’s Office said.

The names of the slain and wounded deputies were not immediately released. The gunman has also not been identified.

“Our fire and law enforcement officers put the safety of others above all else,” Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum said in a statement. “It is almost unimaginable that a call for help turned into the ambush of a Leon County Sheriff’s Deputy and the shooting of another deputy by the assailant. Every one of these first responders is a hero and our hearts go out to them and their families.

UPDATE:  The Tallahassee Democrat is reporting that the property owner, Cheryl Barfield, stated that her sister was “house sitting” for her, and first heard the details when contacted by the newspaper:
Cheryl Barfield owns the home where emergency responders were first called to Saturday morning.
Barfield, who is currently living in Titusville, said her sister had been house-sitting for her, but declined to comment further when reached Saturday afternoon.
Barfield said she was just learning details of what occurred when contacted by the Democrat.
One of the neighbors interviewed stated:
“One of the main reasons why I moved here was because there were so many police officers and firemen in this neighborhood, and it’s crazy to think something like that could happen right down the street,” Baker said.
