Beyoncé did not sing the national anthem live at President Obama’s inauguration.
Millions of viewers around the world were stunned by the singer’s spectacular rendition of the anthem but The Times has learnt that she was lip-syncing to a pre-recorded backing track.
A spokeswoman for the Marine Corp Band said it was standard procedure to record a backing track and Beyoncé decided shortly before her performance to rely on the studio version rather than risk singing it live on the Capitol. (link)

(Washingtonian) — “We don’t know why Beyoncé decided to use prerecorded music,” a spokesperson for the Marine Corps Band told us this morning. “All music [for inaugural ceremonies] is prerecorded as a matter of course, and that’s something we’ve done for years and years. The Marine Band did perform live throughout the ceremony but we received last-minute word that Beyoncé wanted to use the recording.” The spokesperson also added that everyone knows Beyoncé is a gifted singer, and her decision has no bearing on her musical ability. She saig it LIVE, beyonce did NOT.
Whitney sang 2 versions, one in the studio for insurance
purposes & without background interferance; she also performed it live at the Superbowl. The NFL went with the safe version of the studio performance. She did sing it live at the time and not lip synced it like Beyonce. Whitney also donated any payment or royalties to the soldiers and their families.

Either way, the audience heard a vocal recorded in the comfort of a studio several days before the actual event.

I remember watching in TV and getting chills seeing all the fans cheering and waving their flags. I remember that time so well….I was in college and my brother was a soldier fighting in the Gulf War. Everyone was PROUD to be Americans, flags were proudly worn, waved, and displayed, and the country was NOT divided. Our leaders did not try to divide us, there was no “us” and “them”, no mention of “the other side” by our leaders. Sad to see how much has changed in 20+ years…..

I never did like her with Destiny’s Child. Her father is the one who made decisions in HER career and tried to make Beyonce the focal point of the group. She can’t sing. If anyone has to take and use a backup track (whether it’s Beyonce all the way up to Whitney Houston)…you can’t rely on natural talent. Anything in a studio can be made to sound perfect.
Beyonce is probably an Auto Tune platinum member.
Maybe she shared a cigar with Clinton before the show. Left her speechless. She should have let someone else sing. Many people, like the service men and women posted above would have loved to have had that honor. Very Selfish.
