Issa Threatens To Hold Eric Holder In Contempt Over Fast And Furious, Says DOJ “Actively Engaged In Cover-Up”…

(Politico) — House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) threatened Tuesday to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress if the Justice Department did not provide certain documents in response to the committee’s subpoena.

In a letter to Holder, Issa wrote that “this committee will have no alternative but to move forward with proceedings to hold you in contempt of Congress” if Holder and the DOJ didn’t produce documents they demanded relating to the Fast and Furious gun-walking scandal.

Holder has until Thursday, Feb. 9. to comply, according to Issa.

Issa accused the Justice Department of trying to “obstruct our investigation and deceive the public” by withholding documents.

“Your actions lead us to conclude that the department is actively engaged in a cover-up,” he said in a four-page letter.  (read more)

No, his actions knocked us between the eyes and said “Take this, redneck gun totin’ Bible thumpers. You can’t do jack to me.” And so far we haven’t.

What, exactly, does it mean if he is found in contempt of Congress? Will he be arrested and tossed into the clink? Will he face civil or criminal charges? Will it result in his impeachment and/or removal from office. If not, what’s the BFD?

Sadly, I’m pretty sure it won’t lead to the rightful charges of Fraud, Treason, and Subversion, much less the proper sentencing for all . . . but, what it might do, or start to do, maybe (and this is pure, wild, wishful speculation on my part) is start to loosen the control he has over the agencies under him. There has to be someone who can arrest him before he can be arrested, right? Well, right now, those who would arrest him have been under his power– this might start to give them the legal back-up for perp walking him in cuffs through the streets of DC. . .

You can actually go to jail for contempt of Congress. You can go to jail for lying to Congress. Roger Clemens has been in hot water for lying to Congress. Will he or Holder go to jail for this – probably not, but they do have the power to do so.

Just so you know, I think what Roger Clemens did, doesn’t much count, because no one was dying for his actions, but he is more likely to go to jail than Holder.

If Clemens used steroids illegally it’s a local police matter. Congress, I guess, has nothing better to do than to keep baseball honest. They would rather look over the fence for business than to keep their own yard clean.

        • barnslayer says:

          oops. I said tr0lls.

        • texan59 says:

The Feds are still going after Clemens. Not for taking steroids, which is actually a Federal offense, but for lying to Congress. Holder is doing the same thing, but people are dying was my point.

          • barnslayer says:

My point about Clemens was if you get arrested on a drug charge it doesn’t routinely involve any authority beyond the local police dept. Congress should never have wasted our tax dollars discussing the matter in the first place. As you said, compare that to Holder’s abuse of power and resources plus intentionally endangering the American population and Clemens becomes a non-event. Let’s not forget that the guilt goes even higher than Holder.

Yeah, yeah yeah. He’s all talk and no action and has been threatening for a long, long time now. Show me something Darrell, don’t tell me about it. I’m over the talk! Issa has been nothing but a disappointment. What a tease!

Yep. I see this as more chest thumpin’ by the GOP to get all us gun toting bible-clingers whipped up into a frenzy so that we’ll give them campaign money and vote for their guy in November. Because, you know, “America as we know it will be over if Obama wins.” Here’s my question: If the guy is so freakin’ dangerous, why does Congress continue to let him do exactly as he pleases?

Now, don’t get me wrong. I do believe that Obama is dangerous and that America as we know it will be a thing of the past if he wins re-election. But so far, the GOP hasn’t shown itself to be up to the task of stopping him. So why should we continue giving them our consent–through our money and votes–to do nothing?

A very good question, and one which should spread beyond this website.

This is something I have been struggling with for some time. One of my sons told me our only currency with these politicians is our vote. He feels that to give it to the least obnoxious guy because we fear the consequences is to prostitute his vote. I am not far from being there. I am usually fairly decent with words, but I cannot find the words to describe my disgust and rage at the republicans.

        • barnslayer says:

I’m torn on this. One, I want obammy gone. Two, I don’t want another half-stepping please-everybody republican who is only going to set the table for the next liberal.

          • Menagerie says:

Every time we let them back us into that corner, we become more impotent. The only way I see to stop it is to not eventually do what they are counting on us to do. Sigh.

            • barnslayer says:

If we vote for nobama they’ll never know. That leaves not voting (again not much of a statement) or….. we vote for you know who. And if we do what I’m thinking we are gonna owe apologies to a butt-load of trolls.
